Kupper
editFinally heard back from the History Division. Without actually obtaining his service records, they have provided me with a wealth of data that make most of the claims on that "citation" plausable, but proved some of them to be exaggerations. For example, there mounted Marines in China, and there were more Marines than you think in Eurpoe during WWII, both of which suprised me. I think I will file to get a copy of his SRB and see if the awards and units match. On the contrary, muster rolls prove that he left China years before Chesty arrived, and couldn't have served in Nicaragua during the Sandino uprisings, nor was he listed on the rolls of F/2/7 during Chosin; not to mention the lack of records for the Navy Cross. The Silver Star and Purple Hearts may be plausible because Mr. Aquilina readily admitted that thier WWII-era records for these were very incomplete, especially casualty cards.
I'm planning on seeing what his SRB says, and then will share my results with you. There may indeed be some notability, and we can re-start the bio with something factual. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 19:26, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
- I would say that anyone willing to falsely claim a Navy Cross and to have been at the Battle of Fox Hill with F/2/7 may not be worthy of an article. I'll bet his time in the Marine Corps was fairly uneventful and that he was around enough to know what he could claim. No one really checked into these things when he was alive. That bio posted on the web is complete BS. I think Mr Kupper also realized that most of the claims were "plausible" which is why they made it onto his bio. Best to proceed bery cautiously with this one. Getting the SRB, especially that DD-214, would go a long way to hashing this out.--Looper5920 (talk) 05:59, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not so quick to assume that any embellishing was done on the part of MSgt Kupper (which the HD confimed as his final rank). The "citation" was written on the MOPH letterhead, probably by someone in that society; it may have even been written after his death. Regardless, I have a wealth of data to sort through. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 21:42, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
- Well, the SRB is incomplete. There are no mentions of any awards at all, though it all conclusively proves he's not notable enough for an article.
- Got a longshot favor to ask: do you have any photos of Marine One's interior? VH-3, VH-60, VH-71? I know it's incredibly unlikely, but I'm doing another model kit, and none of them come with anything but the standard cargo interiors (metal deck plating, canvas seats, etc.). If I'm gonna build it from scratch, might as well do it right. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 21:21, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
- I have not seen the interior of "Marine One" but I know that the green side birds at HMX-1 do have the original gray padding that covers the guts of the aircraft that do not exist in fleet helicopters. I do not have any pictures unfortunately.--05:51, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

File source and copyright licensing problem with File:Doosan.gif
editThanks for uploading File:Doosan.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, we also need to know the terms of the license that the copyright holder has published the file under, usually done by adding a licensing tag. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged files may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the file will be deleted 48 hours after 15:28, 2 May 2010 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 15:28, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:Benjamin salomon.jpg
editThanks for uploading or contributing to File:Benjamin salomon.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 13:10, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

VMM-263
editIn 2007 you added a list of unit awards to VMM-263. There's a question on the Help desk today asking where this information came from. Can you remember? It's not on the current version of the page at 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. -- John of Reading (talk) 20:27, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
- That was a while back but I would guess that the awards were pulled from the old website. All units in the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing migrated to a new website format and server within the last year or so. Most have not added their award's page unfortunately. I don't know why the anon is asking but I am very familiar with the topic and based on their extensive time in Vietnam and Iraq their time supporting the Gulf War and the number of Marine Expeditionary Unit deployments they have done the awards listed are consistent with that. Hope this helps and that good info is not deleted because of this.--Looper5920 (talk) 19:05, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you. I'm not going to delete the award list, and I hope no-one else does... -- John of Reading (talk) 19:58, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
search for information
editOn December 19, 1977 the pilots of the Fighter Squadron VF-31 intercepted and escorted a pair of Soviet TU-95 RTs "Bear D" that over-flew and took photos of the aircraft carrier "USS Saratoga" (CVA-60), while she was returning from her tour of duty in the Mediterranean Sea to her base in Mayport, Florida. On that day, two F-4 Phantom fighter jets flew out to intercept the Bears. The interception happened some 700-800 kms to the east of Bermuda Islands. I am hoping that someone on this website with all of your experience and extensive amount of information might be able to help me. I am trying to find out the names of the 4 crewman aboard the F-4 that day. There were 2 pilots and 2 RIO's.
I would be very grateful for any help I can get with this search. COUNJandL —Preceding unsigned comment added by Counjandl (talk • contribs) 17:58, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

MAG 49
editThe article says that they will move from Willow Grove to Macguire AFB, but this article from the Marine Corps Times says they are moving from Dobbins to Robins AFB. From New Jersey to Georgia? That seems like a really big discrepancy, maybe you can clear it up. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 13:58, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
- I am on the road right now and will research this in a few days but without looking at the article I can tell you that HMLA-773 which is part of MAG-49 is moving from Dobbins to Robins. The MAG-49 HQ in Willow Grove is going to Maguire. I would say it can be attributed to an error by the author.--Looper5920 (talk) 04:15, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

- Took a look at the bio you asked about, and started digging. Wound up writing Battle of Hill 488, so please take a look when you get the chance. I wasn't 100% which squadrons were there aside from VMO-6 (which was specifically mentioned in the sources), but there were only two F8U squadrons in country at the time, and I think VMO-2 was the only other Huey squadron as well (since the same source mentions that there were more than one UH-1 squadron). Couldn't figure out who few the UH-34s that popped up a few times. And it looks like Howard and Binns are the only Marines there with articles, let me know if you want to do some more. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 20:32, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

File source problem with File:MAG-16 insignia.png
editThank you for uploading File:MAG-16 insignia.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.
If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Magog the Ogre (talk) 18:01, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
File permission problem with File:MAG-16 insignia.png
editThanks for uploading File:MAG-16 insignia.png. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.
If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Diannaa (Talk) 03:52, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

CLB-15
editLooper - I am the current Bn CO for CLB-15. Do you have any idea how long it took me to research and detail the history of Bn COs and SgtsMaj for CLB-15? Why did you remove them from the wiki page?
v/r LtCol John Wiener, USMC — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.212.183.192 (talk) 01:47, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- No disrespect was intended with the deletion but a wikipedia article is not the place to list these individuals. If you search around you will see that no other article on any Marine Corps unit lists the COs and SgtMajs. If a unit has notable former commanders than they definetly should be included either in the article or in the infobox. If you feel that I am worng in pushing this then brining it to the attention of the Military History project folks on their talk page and see what the consensus is. Thanks for the note and hope this answer lets you know where I am coming from.--Looper5920 (talk) 02:02, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Talk:Attack Squadron 12 (United States Navy)
editA tag has been placed on Talk:Attack Squadron 12 (United States Navy) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G6 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an orphaned disambiguation page which either
- disambiguates two or fewer extant Wikipedia pages and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic); or
- disambiguates no (zero) extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title.
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Value your advice/experience
editHi Looper5920, I saw you reverted some edits by User:Mkonji128 who had removed sourced statements from the Camp Schwab article without explanation (as he had previously). The user did the same thing on Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, which he had done previously as well. I've written to him on his talk page and put a note in the article talk page. Since you have a lot more experience than me here and have also edited Futenma previously, I was wondering your advice on whether I should restore the deleted statements to the Futenma article. I don't want to get into an edit war (I've previously restored his deletion of the same sourced statements already), but I do think the article is definitely much more biased now than it was previously. Thanks for your advice. Computermacgyver (talk) 13:55, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

Air Warning Squadron 2
editSorry if this is an inappropriate area to address this. This is my first time here. My father was in AWS2 during WWII, he is still living and we went over this article. There seems to be a few discrepancies, nothing major, but I was wondering if any of his first hand experience with the Guam invasion and the radar used would be of value. Also, his uniform, buried in the attic, has the AWS2 patch, of which I don't believe I have ever seen one, other than that one. If any of this would be of interest, please let me know. I could have him dictate to me the events of the invasion, through his eyes, of course. JefmanUSA JefmanUSA (talk) 05:37, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

File source problem with File:John Ripley.jpg
editThank you for uploading File:John Ripley.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear.
2nd Battalion 7th Marines reference help?
editHi Looper, Wondering if you could help find another link for this reference for 2nd Battalion 7th Marines:
Under the Subordinate Units section, the reference authored by Maj Mabry ("Operations of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division at the Malimbu River and the Metapona River on Guadalcanal Island, 1 November 1942 to 8 November 1942") links to a pdf on benning.army.mil.[1] This is no longer available, and I can't find it in archive.org.
Are you able to find a new link for this reference?

editThank you for your contributions. It seems that you may have added public domain content to one or more Wikipedia articles, such as 2nd Law Enforcement Battalion. You are welcome to import appropriate public domain content to articles, but in order to meet the Wikipedia guideline on plagiarism, such content must be fully attributed. This requires not only acknowledging the source, but acknowledging that the source is copied. There are several methods to do this described at Wikipedia:Plagiarism#Public-domain sources, including the usage of an attribution template. Please make sure that any public domain content you have already imported is fully attributed. Thank you. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 19:19, 17 February 2017 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of 3d Light Antiaircraft Missile Battalion
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on 3d Light Antiaircraft Missile Battalion requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USMC/USMC-C-Defense/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". TopCipher 11:40, 22 February 2017 (UTC)
March Madness 2017
editG'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.
For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)
