Fishkill Creek DYK

Fishkill Creek is currently assessed as a stub, and stubs are not accepted at DYK. However, the article is most definitely not a stub anymore, so simply reassessing it to c or b class (probably b) will make it eligible. Sincerely, LittleMountain5 18:27, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

I didn't know we were going by what it says on the talk page ... I thought that "stub" was strictly a question of whether the template was on the page or not.

I can easily move it up to start-class, but having done so much work on it as I have I do not feel comfortable making any further increases. So, I'll have to ask someone else, further delaying this.

Where and how did this rule get created that the assessment on the talk page is controlling? I do not remember ever going by it when I reviewed DYKs more actively. It defies sense, and you'd do well to ignore it. Daniel Case (talk) 18:42, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

I saw the discussion at T:TDYK and followed it here. I agree with Little Mountain 5; an article that has been correctly assessed as a stub (whether by article-page template/category or talk-page assessment) should not be used in DYK ("There is a reasonable expectation that an article which is to appear on the front page, even a short one, should appear to be complete and not some sort of work in progress."); however, it's quite common for an article to have a stub-class assessment that predates the 5x expansion for DYK, and in that case it's not a problem to reclassify to start-class, which is sufficient for DYK, and then request a reassessment from the appropriate WikiProject(s). On the other hand, if I came across an article like this (obviously no longer a stub) when reviewing DYK hooks, I'd just fix it myself and approve the hook. cmadler (talk) 18:54, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

The article certainly doesn't have to be c or b class, it was just a suggestion; start is fine, and yes, it would have probably been better if I just fixed it myself in the first place. Barnstar and photos

Thanks much for the barnstar and kind words. I got really lucky on my Rogue photo trip. We had three days of clear skies or skies with just enough clouds to be interesting, and I was able to get photos from Grants Pass to within 10 miles or so of Crater Lake. The people at Union Creek Resort said they hadn't had such good weather since last fall. I compiled a list of photo ops in my little black book before I made the trip; it included some National Register of Historic Places buildings in Gold Hill and elsewhere along the way, and I haven't uploaded those yet. I took something like 400 photos, and I'm slowly working my way through the pile, picking out the best ones in each group. I hope you noticed that I added your photo of Mount McLoughlin to the "Watershed" section of the Rogue article. I first saw it when I was reviewing Big Butte Creek and just after I had added mention of the mountain as the highest point in the Rogue watershed. I'm not quite sure yet which photos will end up in the comprehensive version of the article, so if you have any you think might be appropriate, please upload them to the Commons in the Rogue River, Oregon, category. Any suggestions about how to improve the article would be welcome as well. After I fiddle with a few more photos, I think it'll be almost ready to go to PR. Yeah, we finally got some nice weather! :) But now it's raining, again. Oh well, I guess we need it down here. You've done some extraordinary work on the Rogue River article... looks like an FA to me! At this rate, we may have a featured topic in a few years—Tributaries of the Rogue River. :P I'll dig around and see if I have any more images for the Commons category, I probably do. Elk Creek photo

Just noticed it a minute ago. You solved a problem I couldn't solve in April when I walked through the woods to the edge of the no-trespassing zone west of the dam. Roxy Ann Peak Wikipedia Page Trail Edits

I added specific information to the Roxy Ann Peak page recently, mainly because when I first hiked it I missed the tower road that reached the top of the mountain because it was an offshoot that I missed. You recently removed it. I called the parks dept today, and they said the road that leads to the peak is part of the park. It is closed off to vehicles, but not to people as you can simply walk around or over the gate. There is no sign that says it is closed to hikers. And there are signs that direct you to viewpoints along tower road. This area contains some of the best views of the area, so I wanted to include it on the page. Additionally, the elevation profile and map that I link to are GPS-derived, and are completely accurate, as is the nearby weather information, photos and directions to the site.

I would like to add these back to the wiki page to assist others who want to hike this peak. I hope it meets credibility requirements. Is this okay with you? Thanks for your time...if you need to respond my user id is Nsk3179.

I'm hesitant to add julieshad.com as a source simply because it's someone's (your?) personal page, but the information does seem to be accurate, so I put it in the external links section. Thanks, that sounds good to me. The main reason I put the link on there is because google maps won't show up as an image on the wiki page. Let me know if you know how to add this. I'll likely add the profile image so people can get a good idea of the relative steepness of the various parts of the trail, along with the total hike distance. Also, I may add another view to the images. Just curious...why would the site go under "external links" vs. "websites"? Adding pictures via links from external pages is disabled on Wikipedia for several reasons, see here. Any images you upload to Wikipedia (or better yet, Commons) have to be "free for commercial use and alteration"; in other words, it either has to be your picture that you created, or it has to specifically say that it is free to use. So if you created the profile image, you own the copyright and can upload it, but if not, it isn't suitable for Wikipedia. Please see our image use policy for more information.

The reason I put julieshad.com under 'external links' instead of 'websites' is because 'websites' is a subsection of 'references', and it is not currently used as a reference. Hope that clarifies some things. Thanks, LittleMountain5 16:16, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

top ten cities image

Much better. Also, Salem is in Massachusetts not Rhode Island. You might also want to circle the cluster of cities that suddenly shows up between 1850 and 1900 and leave a note along the lines of "Sun Belt cities", since their similarity is nicely shown here.--Louiedog (talk) 17:35, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Portland Parks Photo Blitz!

Thanks for your timely updates to the Gold Ray Dam saga. I had noticed the lawsuit filing but missed the judge's decision, and I was completely unaware of the beaver dam incident. South Fork John Day

Bless you. That's it. I looked and looked, but for some reason could not find an RS for the basin size. The federal agriculture department lumps the South Fork and the upper main stem together, and I was loathe to estimate what fraction belonged to the South Fork. As for the Illinois, I sourced the 60 miles to the John Shewey fishing book. I think the fishing books (Shewey and Sheehan) are OK as reliable sources, but I doubt that the precise length matters much in the context of a fishing guide. Better would be a government number, if I could find one. Thanks a bunch for solving one of the remaining knotty problems with this list. Any suggestions about how to improve the list would be welcome. It's not quite done yet, but I won't have any trouble finishing the source elevation column or the "Remarks" column. All of the sources for the list will come in handy for anyone working on the individual stream articles, I think, since many contain data about things other than length and basin size. Thanks for looking, and thanks for your offer to help. FL is my goal; I want to try one because I've never done one. I review them fairly often, and I think the experience of actually doing one will make me a better reviewer. I agree that the list needs images, and it should be fun picking out some good ones. I'm open to any suggestions. Also, I'd like to include a map showing the four major mountain ranges (Coast Range, Cascades, Blues, and Klamath–Siskiyous) and at least some of the bigger rivers. I haven't figured out how to show the mountain ranges; all of my maps so far represent only two dimensions. Would you be interested in trying your hand at a three-dimensional one like the ones you did for the Chetco and the Rogue? It could be placed near the top of the article, as usual, or it might be an oversized map placed at the bottom like the one in Ricketts Glen State Park. One other thing, I'm not absolutely sure I've identified every creek in the state that's at least 40 miles long. There are some pretty long ones in the dry eastern part of the state. Silver Creek in Harney County might be 40 or more, but I haven't found an RS yet one way or another. It took me a long time to notice that Cow Creek was more than 40. I sent a note to Kmusser this afternoon asking him if he knew of a way to check a central source for Silver Creek and maybe any others over 40 miles. I found a USDA source for the Silver Creek watershed too at [1] which confirms the one you found. (The 1.1 million acres converts to 1,720 square miles, just about the same as the 1,700.) Alas, the USDA documents don't ever seem to include individual stream lengths; rather, they give the sum of all the stream lengths in the watershed. If you can make the map, that would be swell; time is not a problem. I can focus on the other stuff and not get into a sweat about the map. Finetooth (talk) 23:43, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
