Less Unless Thank you for your additions February 2021! WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:05, 1 March 2021 (UTC) |
- I'd like to echo that thanks for your fantastic contributions to Women in Red's Women in Africa contest. An update, now that we're two months in: over 100 articles have been created in January and February! Please help make the final month of the contest a success too :) Dsp13 (talk) 14:39, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Dsp13: Thank you! It's always a great pleasure for me to contribute to any challenge in any way. I will keep on doing what I can. Best, Less Unless (talk) 20:29, 2 March 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for translating her article, but will it get references? I hope so. Better shorter, but referenced. Perhaps compare other articles such as Jessye Norman. Other conventions here: no first name (other than in the first sentence), but repeat last name in the first sentence of each section, for those who come from the TOC. I'll watch, thinking that she should go to DYK. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:48, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Gerda Arendt! There's much to be done to put it for DYK, but it should definitely go there. Thank you for the hints on editing - don't worry I'll do the copy editing after I'm done with the actual translation. I have found several refs and requested more at Resource exchange. I was also thinking about writing directly to users from South Africa Project, maybe they could help. The refs are crucial, they're my main focus now. Best, Less Unless (talk) 23:00, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
- That's good! One more: the "laundry list" of great places is no lead material, - actually it's not good wherever. The lead should rather give an overview of major roles and principal stations. Again: compare Norman or other great singers. - Sometimes I wonder if first translating is a good approach, - much work that often has to be discarded. - I'll check back later, - no more edit conflicts ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:05, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt That's probably my first translation, so I'll learn from the experience. ;) I'll definitely need your help with this. I'll ping you later for a fresh perspective. Best, Less Unless (talk) 23:26, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
- Fine, - we have a few days. I have a dear friend who translates a few every day, like Klaus Hinrich Stahmer, - I am used to it ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:31, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
- Look! [1] - that's something to build on. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:40, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you! I've already found this one on German wiki. Will refine the structure and look for more refs. Less Unless (talk) 23:45, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, but I now gave them the precise link to the page. I did other copy-editing, - your turn. The lead should be a summary of her achievements. I don't see room there for this "one of three"-sentence, - who cares at that point? Better put it somewhere else. We will need references for the private details - where she met her husband ... - and especially the longish cigarette quote. Please don't say Royal Opera House here, but Covent Garden there, - we have readers who don't know that it's the same thing. Otherwise, I hope edit summaries will speak for themselves. I'll check tomorrow. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:18, 16 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, Gerda Arendt. Thank you for the amount of work you've done, it's actually pretty satisfying for me to team up with you like this - hope it's not much trouble for you. I've added several refs, but I could not find the one to back up the cigarette quote. Resource exchange and the Afrikaans user I've written to are silent, let's wait couple of days. I've actually found many mentions of her in the British magazine Opera, but there are no full texts in open access. Please, take a look. Best, Less Unless (talk) 17:37, 16 March 2021 (UTC)
- I will, later today. - I like doing this together, for a great singer! - I am busy with a young pianist, and similar sourcing problems, - I mean same bio everywhere but without much substance. Due for DYK today ... --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:48, 16 March 2021 (UTC)
- I looked, found the Met archives, but no indication that she ever sang something other than Helmwige in Die Walküre. But Turandot. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:17, 16 March 2021 (UTC)
- For fun NYT says nothing about her than that she appeared, but interesting about the rest. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:41, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

- Could you help with Michael Hampe, one of the other translations, or the above-mentioned Stahmer? - Good to know ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:37, 17 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, Gerda Arendt! I have added from 4 to 5 refs to each of the articles you mentioned and did some other copy editing. As for Marita - I couldn't find any other sources to back the personal statements. So, I guess we should remove them. Less Unless (talk) 17:11, 19 March 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for the refs. - I had no time yet to check, but will. - Marita Napier: go over it critically, and if you feel a detail would be really good to know, leave it for now, but discard what perhaps even holds up more important things. DYK reviewers tend to look at the end of paragraphs, so uncited details (if any remain) should better go somewhere in the middle. When done ping me for a check, and then you can nominate for DYK. If a reviewer has a problem with a detail, you can prune then. You decide ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:26, 19 March 2021 (UTC)

Less Unless Thank you for your additions March 2021! - WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:59, 1 April 2021 (UTC) |
Hi Less Unless,
Reviving this discussion from a few weeks ago. Thanks for taking the time to review it! Totally see your points there. Although he did write music for John Wick, it's not highly documented as the music only exists in the film and on complete collection soundtracks. So it's hard to find enough documentation for that. As for the awards, however, I'm hoping we can revisit that. I took a look at WP:SIGCOV, and quoting from the document, "Independent of the subject" excludes works produced by the article's subject or someone affiliated with it. For example, advertising, press releases, autobiographies, and the subject's website are not considered independent. As such, both awards are independent of the subject. Additionally, you can't get more reliable as a source than the original source. Following that logic, when creating an article on a Nobel Prize winner, there will be no more reliable source than The Nobel Foundation. So would you be kind enough to reconsider it as I do believe those awards do fulfill Wikipedia's requirement on a reliable source. Additionally, the two theatrical projects prove his notability and qualification under the Criteria for composers and lyricists - 2. Has written musical theatre of some sort (includes musicals, operas, etc.) that was performed in a notable theatre that had a reasonable run, as such things are judged in their particular situation, context, and time. The original article draft has plenty of references confirming these. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!
- Hello Wcmartinezii. Talking about the awards and sources you mentioned. Independent also called third-party means the source is not in any way affiliated with the subject. The awards sites presented in the article however were affiliated as they got a fee from each nominee. Please take a look here WP:IIS for more detailed explanation. You see, the problem with the awards is that they require a fee to enroll. As you quoted the WP:MUSICBIO, the awards have to be major. I may be wrong, but the listed awards don't seem major. The Nobel Prize you mentioned is one of the most prestigious awards where the nominees do not pay to enroll therefore their site may be used as a source. But also the information about the laureates is widely covered in numerous third party sources, so there won't be a problem to provide WP:IRS for that. Also please note, that the guidelines state: Musicians or ensembles (this category includes bands, singers, rappers, orchestras, DJs, musical theatre groups, instrumentalists, etc.) may be notable if they meet at least one of the following criteria - it doesn't make them automatically notable. We need independent reliable sources with significant coverage. As for this 2. Has written musical theatre of some sort (includes musicals, operas, etc.) that was performed in a notable theatre that had a reasonable run, as such things are judged in their particular situation, context, and time. - again, I doubt the theatre is notable. I would recommend you to address your question to WikiProject Composers for more opinions on the subject and his notability. Best, Less Unless (talk) 12:05, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
DYK for Marita Napier
On 14 April 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Marita Napier, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Marita Napier is the first South African opera singer to have performed lead roles in each of the four "Grand Slam" opera houses? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Marita Napier. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Marita Napier), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

- Gerda Arendt Thank you too! It was a pleasure working with you. Actually I wondered if we could work together on bringing some articles to Good article status or even Featured. I've never done it before, but would like to try. If you have anything in your mind, I'll be happy to help or accept your guidance. Best, Less Unless (talk) 17:31, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
- Would you like to try for Napier? - Compare Jessye Norman, and see what you may want to add or strike. Inge Borkh is on my mind for GA. I'm currently working for BWV 157, but that's possibly not your cup of tea ;) If I'm wrong, just feel free to add. More sources would be good. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:46, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt I'll think about Napier, thank you . As for the cantata, my only problem with it is that I know nothing about classical music :) But I will take a look, maybe I'll find something. Best, Less Unless (talk) 18:58, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you. Napier: what would be nice is critical recognition of what made her voice and singing unique, and how she acted on stage. - Cantata: keep looking, but don't edit right now, to avoid edit conflicts, - better tomorrow. Just adding a source is of course welcome anytime. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:02, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

GA - Marita Napier
Hello @Gerda Arendt:! I have finally managed to look through about 150 articles mentioning Marita Napier. I have decided to create a new thread for this). Having studied the Jessye Norman article thoroughly I fear there won't be such extensive coverage for Marita as 1) she was most active in the pre internet era, 2) she was less public if I can say so. I have gained access to newspapers.com and found numerous mentions of Marita Napier (much more than 150). There are at least 5 reviews that talk about her for at least 2-3 paragraphs, but what concerns me is that most of the reviews are rather critical. Complimentary remarks are short, but I still can find enough that describe the tone of her voice, for instance. I am still trying to get that Beeld article published after her death - I have written to the editors office asking them to provide that article, hoping for a positive answer. Apart from that I am afraid I don't know where to get more sources and information. Maybe I am missing something? Can you share your experience - what are the places you look for the older issues or articles? Best, Less Unless (talk) 22:44, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
- All fine, you can't cite what's not there, and you can't cite 150. Select what's most useful, better two good (I mean detailed, nor praising) reviews than 20 superficial ones. I suggest you go to project opera - link on my user page - where the experts in finding old sources are, SusunW does it for other topics, - no idea if she could help also with this one, Marita Napier. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:21, 15 May 2021 (UTC)

Your Respect
Hi, I supported you in your RFA for saying how much your respect others. That being said, I'm just curious as to whether you're actually male or female since there's no mention on your userpage. You don't have to answer this question and you still make a good editor regardless. NYC Guru (talk) 20:53, 17 May 2021 (UTC)

- How fortuitous, I was dropping by regarding this very topic. I don't know if you've run across it, or if it's been mentioned to you, but ... you can set a gender preference if so desired. There is a way to make it more widely known that you prefer to be addressed in the feminine gender. If you click on "Preferences" (I think clicking on this link: Special:Preferences will work if you can't find it in your tabs.) ... Anyway - once there, on the first page ("User profile"), scroll down to the "Internationalisation" section, you should see several options, one of them being:
- Use feminine terms when possible (e.g. "her contributions")
- If you pick that, then it will be more obvious to many other users. (depending on settings, it will put the ♀ symbol by your user name on your user page and talk page). If you already knew this - apologies for the interruption. Cheers. — Ched (talk) 08:06, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello, Less Unless,
If you want to frequent this admin noticeboard (and I think it's one of the more fun admin tasks), you might see about getting the script that helps with this task...I believe it is called rfud-helper. One thing this script does is make an edit to the restored stale draft that prevents it from looking like it's an expiring draft and getting deleted again (which unfortunately can happen). I know that Muboshgu uses it so maybe he can identify where to find it. Cheers. Liz Read! Talk! 00:50, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

- Liz, Muboshgu thank you! It's really helpful as cleaning up the drafts manually takes some time that could be put to good use. Less Unless (talk) 13:19, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
- I think I will install that script. A few editors come directly to me to restore their CSD G13s which I'm happy to do and I frequently check REFUND to see what drafts have been restored. But I think it's good when a different admin reviews a refund request rather than the admin who deleted the page. Liz Read! Talk! 01:45, 6 June 2021 (UTC)

- Consensus was reached to deprecate Wikipedia:Editor assistance.
- Following a Request for Comment the Book namespace was deprecated.
- Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.
- After a Clarification request, the Arbitration Committee modified Remedy 5 of the Antisemitism in Poland case. This means sourcing expectations are a discretionary sanction instead of being present on all articles. It also details using the talk page or the Reliable Sources Noticeboard to discuss disputed sources.

Hey Respected Sir I looked a Musical Artist please take a look about Him. His Name is Adnan Safir. I request you to please check his notability to create a Wikipedia Page Urwisher (talk) 15:29, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, @Urwisher:. Currently as it is Draft:Adnan Safir doesn't look notable. There are two guidelines that can be applicable here - WP:GNG - this is a general guideline that requires significant coverage in multiple reliable independent sources. The second one is WP:NMUSIC. Please take a look at them. Thank you for your contributions! Best, Less Unless (talk) 18:57, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

- Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
- An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.
- IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.
- The community authorised COVID-19 general sanctions have been superseded by the COVID-19 discretionary sanctions following a motion at a case request. Alerts given and sanctions placed under the community authorised general sanctions are now considered alerts for and sanctions under the new discretionary sanctions.
Welcome to RFPP
Hello, Less Unless! Belated congratulations on your very successful RfA! Today I noticed you doing some protecting at WP:RFPP, and I want to welcome you to that board. Your edits there have been excellent and helpful. I just thought I'd suggest, if you would like some tips or philosophy about protection, that you might take a look at my essay User:MelanieN/Page protection. For that matter, I see that nobody told you about setting up your Adminstats page. You can read about that, and any other new goodies that you now have access to, at User:MelanieN/Admin bling.
Have fun with your new tools, and thanks for all your help here! -- MelanieN (talk) 20:09, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
- MelanieN, thank you so much for the suggested essays, it's really helpful to have someone more experienced around. I am grateful you offered your assistance as I definitely need some. Best, Less Unless (talk) 06:30, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- Glad you find them helpful. If you ever have any questions or feel the need of some mentoring, give me a holler. I don't know everything - not by a long shot - but if I can't answer a question I may know who can. -- MelanieN (talk) 16:59, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

Hello Less Unless. For cleanup of Irene Aloisi, I used the {{hidden}} template to make the article more aesthetically pleasing without having to give it the old "chop chop". Hi, Less Unless. You may not be aware, but your creation of the article Marita Napier knocked another one off of the list of famous people from Find A Grave for which Wikipedia does not have an article. I wanted to bring this to your attention both to thank you and to let you know about it as a resource in case you didn't since you volunteer for WP Women in Red. DYK for Miguelina Acosta Cárdenas
On 5 September 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Miguelina Acosta Cárdenas, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Miguelina Acosta Cárdenas. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Miguelina Acosta Cárdenas), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021
Hello Less Unless,
Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.
Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.
At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.
There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.
Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.
To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here. Sent to 827 users. 04:31, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – October 2021
News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2021).
- Following an RfC, extended confirmed protection may be used preemptively on certain high-risk templates.
- Following a discussion at the Village Pump, there is consensus to treat discord logs the same as IRC logs. This means that discord logs will be oversighted if posted onwiki.
- DiscussionTools has superseded Enterprisey's reply-link script. Editors may switch using the "Discussion tools" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features.
- A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
- Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
- The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.
- Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
- The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.
