Replaceable fair use File:Mysore Lancers Memorial at Bangalore.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:Mysore Lancers Memorial at Bangalore.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Eeekster (talk) 07:57, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

Talk page usage and stuff
editMusketeer, here at Wikipedia, our discussion systems are still kind of in the dark ages, so there is weird stuff you need to do that you don't need to do elsewhere. First, in contrast to most sites, new discussions go on bottom. The easiest way is to use the "New section" button that appears near the top right of the screen, right below your username. The other quirk is to end all your posts with "~~~~", and when you hit save, the software will add your username and the date.
As far as your new articles, I patrolled the ones you linked. Some had already been patrolled by someone who forget to remove the tag at the top, some had passed the 30-day new article timeline, but they are all now noted as patrolled articles. Your articles are quite good, so keep up the good work. Oiyarbepsy (talk) 18:15, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

- Do take the time to read the Q&A if you have any questions, or ask on the talk page.
- The list of participants has been alphabetized so you can more easily find your name and report your contributions.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Tucks Post Card Edits arbitration case request declined
editIn response to your request for arbitration of this issue, the Arbitration Committee has agreed that arbitration is not required at this stage. Arbitration on Wikipedia is a lengthy, complicated process that involves the unilateral adjudication of a dispute by an elected committee. Although the Committee's decisions can be useful to certain disputes, in many cases the actual process of arbitration is unenjoyable and time-consuming. Moreover, for most disputes the community maintains an effective set of mechanisms for reaching a compromise or resolving a grievance.
For grievances about the conduct of a Wikipedia editor, you should approach the user (in a civil, professional way) on their user talk page. However, other mechanisms for resolving a dispute also exist, such as raising the issue at the administrators' noticeboard for incidents.
In all cases, you should review Wikipedia:Dispute resolution to learn more about resolving disputes on Wikipedia. The English Wikipedia community has many venues for resolving disputes and grievances, and it is important to explore them instead of requesting arbitration in the first instance. For more information on the process of arbitration, please see the Arbitration Policy and the Guide to Arbitration. I hope this advice is useful, and please do not hesitate to contact a member of the community if you have more questions. L235 (t / c / ping in reply) 21:59, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

Vijayanagar Empire
editHi WestCoastMusketeer. Your edits have been reverted because Tamil language was not a primary language of the empire. Also a FA is a summary article. Based on your argument, we should have images of Malayalam and Portuguese inscriptions as well, because there are a few of those too. Majority of the inscriptions were in Kannada followed by Telugu, and hence the focus on them. As such the FA has enough images. Can you justify why a Tamil inscription from a temple in Bangalore and one from Tamil Nadu should find a place in a summary style FA on Vijayanagar Empire to admins and see their reaction.Jugaari cross (talk) 13:29, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
The images show the greatness and broadmindedness of the Vijaynagar rulers in patronising all languages. If there are any Portuguese Vijaynagar inscriptions I'll be delighted. Please include the same. How does the scholarship of this article reduce by including inscriptions of Vijaynagar in other languages? I have no interest in promoting any language, I'm not even a Citizen of your country for that matter. Both the inscriptions are Vijaynagar from a temple in Bangalore and another in Hoskote which is also in Karnataka. Also, the file http://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Poetic_Kannada_inscription_of_Manjaraja_dated_1398_CE_at_Vindyagiri_hill_in_Shravanabelagola.jpg which is part of the article is clearly a Jain inscription and missing the sun and crescent moon momogram of the Vijaynagar empire, how do you justify that?
- Hi. Manjaraja (also called Manjarasa) was a court poet in the Vijayanagara court, under King Harihar II. If there was a poetic inscription of a Telugu poet from the royal court I would put it there, but I can't find any. Wiki is about "major facts" and Tamil/Malayalam/Tulu/Portuguese are not major points w.r.t the empire. I fully understand Vijayanagara's greatness. You may not be from India but that does not mean anything. You just need to understand that FA is not meant to be cluttered with images and with less important material. Now that you have got the article locked up, I hope you have the courtesy to request that admin to revert your edit, unless you are using the same mechanism (single point) that you are accusing me off.Jugaari cross (talk) 14:20, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
Agreed that this is a FA article, but the information has to be diverse and inclusive. I don't see merit in the notion that just because the a language has greater inscriptions only that shoul be represented. And how do you judge the importance? Having said that I am ready to remove one image and retain the The Hoskote inscription. If we cannot come to an agreement, I'll take it up for arbitration
- Hi Westcoast. The importance of Kannada and Telugu stems from the fact that they had prominence in the royal capital Vijayanagara of which there are no shortage of sources. Tamil does not come under that category. Putting images of Tamil, Malayalam and Tulu (only 2 of which have been discovered out of 7000 in all) creates a biased view. Remember the adage "a picture says a thousand words"? It fails the WP:UNDUE. How does one know Roman was important in Rome? Would you add an image of a Kannada/Telugu inscription (of which there were plenty locally in the Mysore Kingdom/Hyderabad) to an FA on the Mogul Empire?. Think about it with an open mind. This is not an issue about bargaining, but an issue of common sense. I can see from you edit history you have thrown the same images in numerous articles. So the intent may not have been to bring out the 'greatness of the empire'. I don't want to start guessing about your intentions. You may remove one image and keep the other, but If you sincerely want to improve the article without any language bias, I suggest you request that the article be reverted to its original form and call for a discussion. As such the WP:Burden of proving the validity of the Tamil inscription is still yours since the article was quite stable until you came along.Jugaari cross (talk) 19:25, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
I'll take this up for arbitration once the article opens for editing. Thank you.
Feel Free. But bring the article back to its original form before you do so. That's how wiki works. You discuss first and then make edits. You don't make debatable edits, freeze the article, and then go to arbcom to discuss.Jugaari cross (talk) 12:29, 10 June 2016 (UTC)
The article will be taken for arbitration as it is now. Its you who have a problem with the edits and not me. The article was frozen by admins if you have a problem with that, then take it up with them. now that it has been decided to go for arbitration, I don't wish to argue any further on my talk page.
Hey cool it, don't get too worked up. Users with hot tempers and parochial views usually don't get much done on wikipedia in the long run. BTW, due to urgent professional business, I will not be able to take active part for a while, so you can hold off on the arbcom. Just too busy right now. Good luck learning to be a good wikipedian, you could start by signing your name with four 'tildas' every time you leave a message.Jugaari cross (talk) 23:58, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

editG'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive
editG'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
- updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.
