I have deleted a userbox template you recently created, as userboxes should no longer be created in templatespace per the terms of the German userbox solution. Here is the userbox code so that you can recreate the userbox in your userspace ("userfying") if you wish.

MoS deadline

edit

I am thinking that we should put a closing date on the MoS proposal. What do you think... seven days from now? --Chris S. 05:48, 18 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

That'll be too quick. Perhaps a month will do. We need to pass this to everybody, not just Pinoy Wikipedians. (And oh, can you move Cebu back where it belongs?) --Howard the Duck 05:50, 18 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
As for the voting, a month sounds too long. Maybe we should split the difference at two weeks and put a notice in the main manual of style page? --Chris S. 06:30, 18 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Angeles City is not a former city of the province of Pampanga

edit

I just wanted to let you know that Angeles City is still a part of the province of Pampanga. It may be politically independent, but it is still a part of the province. Please refer to the official website of Pampanga at http://www.pampangacapitol.com/ ----- Voltes5 04:21, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Do they vote for the governor? --Howard the Duck 04:26, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

As far as I know and according to my family, they still vote for the governor. Voltes5 04:40, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

We need to verify this because the constitution says:
"Article X, Section 12. Cities that are highly urbanized, as determined by law, and component cities whose charters prohibit their voters from voting for provincial elective officials, shall be independent of the province. The voters of component cities within a province, whose charters contain no such prohibition, shall not be deprived of their right to vote for elective provincial officials."
In other words, if Angeles City voters don't vote for the governor, then they are not tehnically part of Pampanga. See related discussion at Talk:Cities of the Philippines.--Howard the Duck 04:43, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

You're right, we need to verify this. I will do some research to check what people in Angeles City and in Pampanga are doing. The next gubernatorial election is around the corner in 2007. This would be the perfect opportunity to check the accuracy of the constitution. I'll keep you posted ---- Voltes5 04:58, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re: Isn't "founded" and inaugural season a bit redundant?

No. See MLS and WNBA.
Re: But they would relatively comprise a small number of leagues.

No. Many, if not most, leagues have different founding years and inaugural years. Founding is a business term that usually refers to incorporation and/or establishment. Once incorporated or established, a league must organize and plan the logistics. Look at J. League for another example. I suggest that founded be removed and replaced with inaugural season.

Diacritical Marks

edit

Hi! Thanks for your observation, sir. Yes, I do notice that SOME Filipinos, no matter how disgustingly and grossly innapropriate it is, fail to use diacritical marks whenever they write Hispanic names. You said that MODERN Filipinos don't use diacritics anymore except for ñ. But there are still SOME Filipinos who do use them, especially those with the names JOSÉ, ZÓBEL, SOME GARCÍAs, etc. But sir, are we to follow the rules of majority here? Or should we just place accent marks on the names of the Hispanic rich?

I'm not sure what you mean by modern, or by what specific year or period should we follow this modern trend of non-usage of diacritics. After the Spaniards have left? After World War II? After the Cory Constitution (wherein Spanish was crossed out as an official language)?

Anyway, before I joined Wikipedia, I noticed that in the list of Philippine Actors, some names there already have diacritical marks. So I thought they were OK here. Those that didn't, I took the pain of correcting.

But thanks to the demand of Spanish-speaking outsourced representatives here in the Philippines, many Filipinos, bit by bit, are starting to see the light. Pepe alas 07:44, 26 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Actually those Filipino actors had "plain"/no diacritics article names until somebody moved them. The practice in the Philippines, and the most widely followed convention is to omit those, except for the letter ñ, although several Spanish mestizos continue to use them, like your example above. But the common use is to omit them. I myself omit them, and on articles, I tend to omit them except for people who publicly use and/or endorse the use of diacritics in their names. --Howard the Duck 07:49, 26 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorry if I'm coming in late for this, but I'd like to let you know about a few thoughts that I placed on the MOS talk pages[[1]]. I'd love to hear your comments on my input. --- Tito Pao 21:21, 13 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Diacritical Marks II

edit

Oh, OK. Now I understand that we have conventions to follow and I respect that. However, sir, I can never allow jueteng (illegal numbers game) in the Philippines to prevail as much as I will allow Filipino ignorance over diacritical marks to continue. Since jueteng has become so prevalent, majority of Filipinos are led to believe complacently that jueteng is but a harmless cultural convention. The last time I looked, it is still widely accepted that gambling is immoral (and I'll be very much surprised and disappointed if you disagree to it). In my humble opinion, sir, allowing the non-usage of diacritical marks to Filipino names to go scot free is tantamount to tolerating a gross error, or an orthographic immorality (uh-oh, I can already imagine Chris S. frowing, lol), to roam around the netosphere, let alone wikipedia.

Sir, I believe that wikipedia should not only be the most reliable and popular source of information. It can also be a good vehicle to let the Filipino nation know what's improper or not. Although I've been with wikipedia for only around a month, I can never stomach that this prestigious site will be used an ugly vehicle towards tolerating a crass error.

Just imagine what might Filipino actor Richard Gutiérrez could be thinking of once he discovers that his last name in wikipedia has a queer accent mark above the first letter e. That will make him wonder, eventually it will make him ponder. Then he'll go hereabouts and yonder, thinking whether what he saw was an error. That "pesky" little annoyance will provoke him to ask questions, probe, research, discover.

It's a first step.

This reminds me of the great, late Filipina actress Charito Solís. Filipinos tend to pronounce her name in llana (SO-lis). But one day, she corrected an interviewer who mispronounced her last name. By golly, Ms. Solís knew how to pronounce her last name correctly! But what I don't know is if she puts an accent mark above the letter i on her last name.

Wikipedia, I firmly believe, will put back the R-E-S-P-E-C-T-A-B-I-L-I-T-Y to Filipino names.

Thank you for taking your time and patience to read this, sir. Take care and Godspeed!

Affectionately yours,

Pepe alas 18:14, 28 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

So if I don't have diacritics on my name then my name isn't R-E-S-P-E-C-T-A-B-L-E?
Yes he have standards to follow, and you don't want to follow that, you might as well push for a change in the convention.
Jueteng is immoral. But is omitting diacritical marks that bad? Filipinos don't (and haven't) spoke Spanish so it isn't that improper; I'd use diacritics if and only if the person uses it him/her self (like Beyoncé), recommends others to do the same (see Mapúa Institute of Technology, or if several experts pronounced that diacritics is essential for that person (as in the case of José Rizal (which led to the use the diacritic on historical Fiilipinos, but not modern age ones)). so if the reason is to follow Spanish convention in an English language Wikipedia, in which Spanish isn't (and haven't) actually used in the country, it is pretty improper for Richard Guttierez to see his name like that and yell what was that little accent mark on the latter "e". I very much doubt if Captain Barbell's birth certificate had that little mark.
As a sidenote, accent marks are still taught in Filipino classes, but only in pronounciation, students aren't taught to transmit it in paper.
(Also, try putting this on the first (#Diacritical Marks section, I haven't noticed this new section. I'll be transferring this to first section within 48 hours after 15:09, 29 September 2006 (UTC).) --Howard the Duck 15:09, 29 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Arg, I guess that's a quirk of saving it as png. I'm not sure why it's not that way with Image:BlankMap-World.png though. But here's a way you can get around it, I think... just open MS Paint first, then open the Image:BlankMap-Philippines.png in your browser. Copy and paste it from browser to MS Paint, and hopefully you can be able to color it properly. And later on don't forget to save as PNG. :) --Coffee 11:17, 8 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hey, it worked! One last thing though, can you eliminate the really small islands? Also, can you lessen the resolution? As a locator map, it can really be big. --Howard the Duck 11:29, 8 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've uploaded a new version that doesn't have those tiny tiny islands, and I connected some of the islands that are close together so they can be colored with one click. By my count, it takes just 180 clicks to color all the land in that picture. As for resizing... I'm back in Cebu now and don't have access to Photoshop, and MS Paint isn't good at resizing, so that'll have to wait. :/ --Coffee 02:45, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I think the removal of small islands is good enough, having a big pic isn't bad after all. --Howard the Duck 02:47, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
