Section on Promotion

edit

I would like to propose a section on Promotion. I have come here looking for who the current promotor of the Formula One World Championship is, but was surprised to not find an easy answer. Rally Wonk (talk) 11:56, 14 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps in F1 the correct term is "Commercial Rights" instead, but I found this term in passing reference only in History and Future. Where is the Present section? The section headers of this article need work IMO. Rally Wonk (talk) 12:14, 14 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
"Commercial rights holder" is definitely better than "promoter", because as far as I'm aware Formula One doesn't have a promoter, beyond FOM. Instead broadcasters promote their coverage, and Grands Prix are promoted by the Grand Prix organisers, not centrally (as far as I'm aware). As an aside, this article doesn't have a level 2 "present" section because the article is Formula One, not History of Formula One. SSSB (talk) 12:55, 14 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Promotion is more than building an audience; it involves actively forming the calendar or ensuring participation of competitors as well as being the commercial rights holder; such as merch sales, broadcast deals, sponsorship and race organiser contracts. Other FIA championships have reliable official sources explicitly referencing who the Promoter is, but not F1. It's a baffling list of companies owned by companies, partnered with partners and shareholders and holding groups.
I'm not sure what you mean with Present doesn't exist because there's an article called History of Formula One. I came here for up-to-date information of what Formula One is, not what is was. With that article existing, the History section here should be vastly reduced to only statements that are pertinent to the rest of the article, what should all be present and future of Formula One. I don't believe any section should be named as such though, not helpful. Rally Wonk (talk) 14:00, 14 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
"It's a baffling list of companies owned by companies, partnered with partners and shareholders and holding groups." This is why a section for promoters is not viable. F1 doesn't have a single promoter. It is a combination of in house promotion, with some parts outsourced, some parts (doubtless) outsourced to shell companies, some aspects of promotion (like team merch) is handled by teams (who probably do their own outsourcing). Other aspects of promotion will be handled by the FIA. Individual broadcasters, companies that offer promotions. Wikipedia is not a directory.
"I came here for up-to-date information of what Formula One is, not what is was." - you've come to the wrong place. This is a general purpose encyclopedia, and this is the general Formula One article. So it does and should contain general Formula One information. A bit of history, a bit about the drivers, a bit about the teams, a bit about the calendar structure, a bit about the weekend structure, a bit about the championship, a bit about the cars. A little bit of everything. That's why this article is structured the way it is. A little section for all the major aspects. Not a section listing all the little cogs that make up Championship's promotion. SSSB (talk) 14:18, 14 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Please note that Formula One World Championship redirects here, and is why I'm here. There should indeed only be one championship promoter (There is uber-exposure to the general topic and I have a rough idea who it is - Formula One Group). I'm very grateful for your answer however I disagree.
Please allow me to be clear, I do not request a thorough explanation of promotion in the industry of every formula one event, team merch, what broadcasters do..; only the championship as it is property that belongs to the FIA in current times. (You can see context to this question in this edit). If we are confused discussing this now, and a distinction cannot be made between a general Formula One article and the FIA's World Championship, perhaps that is something of a mess to be sorted? When we look at the season articles, (2024 Formula One World Championship), there is only really the sporting aspect covered, with no need to repeat what is constant for several seasons. Hi. I've looked at the course page and I'm none the wiser what this is about? Can you explain the relevance to this talk page/article please? Not being obstructive, I'm interested. I just feel this could be clearer? Mark83 (talk) 10:31, 20 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi Mark83 - thanks for checking in on this! My students are participating in the Wiki Education Foundation program (https://wikiedu.org/mission-and-vision/) this semester, so they are looking for content gaps to address on Wikipedia - particularly in relation to gender since our course is entitled "Communicating Feminism." This particular group is looking to see if they can add some information about women's roles in Formula 1 to the page. They are open to feedback from others who have worked on the page. Best!
