Diuris images

Hello Gnangarra,

Greetings from the other side of the continent.

I am writing a few W.A. orchid pages and noticed some changes on the Diuris page. In particular, an image of yours that you added in 2006 as Diuris carinata (with a note about about some uncertainty) was renamed Diuris magnifica by [[1]] on 7 November 2009 with no reason given. Given that you created the image in Kings Park, presumably of a labelled plant, I think the label should be Diuris carinata. You?

I am also curious about the image of Diuris longifolia on the same page. You appear to have added it to Wikimedia Commons as Diuris brumalis then labelled it on the Wikipedia page as Diuris longifolia. The same image has been used on the Diuris brumalis page. I do not profess to be an orchid expert so please tell me if I have been wrong in changing the label (on the Diuris page) to Diuris brumalis.

I have an image that I think is of Diuris longifolia which I will use on a page about that species. Gderrin (talk) 00:22, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

Durius brumalis it is.. the Durius are one I have trouble with getting accurate id's on because the species have very subtle variations it can be more a time and place rather than appearance that enables an accurate description I use Florabase to id.. If you think one is something else I'm not going to argue with you when it comes the Durius so yeah if you have an image your more certain about with id then use it. Well, I am sorry to inform you that using that template on articles is a very bad idea, and probably not allowed. I can easily edit over a thousand articles per day, imagine if I would leave such a template on every page I edited! And imagine what would happen if everyone did! TBH I am not sure if such a policy exists, although I wouldn't be surprised if it does. We can use WP:CONSENSUS. Where have you used those other templates? Do you agree that it would be problematic if I (or other people) would make a similar template that links to a local business, and place it on many pages? Talk Page lurkers comment - To predicate a message probably not allowed, or even bad idea suggests a lack of knowledge of the context of where outreach/glamprojects work, in a number of projects around WP en, where there are various forms of acknowledgement of work on specific projects.

Please, also to invoke slippery slope conjecture, is misleading and misrepresenting the issue. The identification is not a 'self identifying' one, but a very specific contribution, to a very specific project - this has nothing to do in any way with general editing by wikipedian editors. There is a substantive difference that specificallly identify the project, the writer and the purpose.

Find the policy you think is tied, and link to it. Meanwhile, however well intentioned the comments might be, try understanding that where attribution exists in article history at all times (have a look at contribution history on any article - there off-wiki programmes that specifically identify editors...) - this is something different JarrahTree 08:38, 14 September 2015 (UTC)

Well, personally I am not a complete idiot (but I am a potato, we potatoes don't have much brainpower), and I would say that both Raffaele Martelli and Annie Stack are probably not notable enough to get a Wikipedia article (after reading the articles). And if they are then the reason(s) why should be clear when reading the article (this ensures people won't tag them for deletion). Please read WP:NOTABILITY, especially this section. Not sure where the judgement of in process articles from from - the articles are in process of being wikified - you are jumping in too quick at the wrong spot. A major problem with jumping on articles in process is you are welcome to your insights into what constitutes what, but you are wrong. They are indeed notable people, and also when the articles have been subjected to the usual processes of wikification, the notability issues become totally irrelevent. Thank you, interesting stuff. Would you please be so kind to answer the rest of my questions (above, in my comment dated 09:10, 14 September 2015)? Do you have more examples? One of the differences is that that text in David Ritchie (diplomat) is imported from an external source that uses a (probably compatible) license and requires attribution. In the case of Raffaele Martelli and Annie Stack there is no evidence of that. The best solution would be for Robyn Taylor to create an Wikipedia account so there is no attribution required (other than the page history). Has Robyn Taylor licensed these texts? Under which license? Another difference is that you are using a huge template you made yourself with a link to a commercial company and a picture (the picture is too big, but even at this size I had to click on it to see what it was) instead of plain text (and the minimum text required). Currently the CC-notice template also contains a logo, albeit a tiny one that is actually relevant, I am not sure why, and I would recommend removing it. But, if you have evidence that Robyn Taylor uses one of the licenses that are compatible with Wikipedia then you can use CC-notice. WP:IAR If the rules get in the way of making or maintaining an encyclopaedia then ignore them, adding the template enables compliance with re-use conditions so it would be that WP:COMMONSENSE is actually supportive of what I and other editors have done consistently since WP started. Thanks for the two additional sources on Raffaela first I need to add inline for the text that was provided, then I'll work expanding it with other materials. I'm happy to discuss this further but please besides an WP:IDONTLIKE reason I'd appreciate it if you could show me some policy reasons specifically related to the issue. As I had just created the template and was still working on the template and its placement in articles that had you not wasted my time with demands it would have been tested on multiple devices and adjusted sooner, it also would have been better in the first instance to have just said it looks to big on a small screen can you reduce it. The way I see it, Lotterywest is effectively paying to have its name mentioned on Wikipedia articles. This kind of sponsored content amounts to back-door advertisement: "This article brought to you by Lotterywest." I really, really doubt that the community would agree to that if it were aware of the issue. I don't think it's comparable to attributing PD sources to avoid plagiarism. There are all kinds of other problems here that I could think of; for example, those who add this content to Wikipedia are effectively proxying for paid editors while avoiding the letter of the Terms of Use. I'll raise the issue at WP:AN to get more community input. This isn't just something a single project should decide, and as soon as we begin to credit a lottery company, I don't think calling it a "glamproject" is appropriate. Exactly. This is not comparable to an attribution template. I don't need a policy to show that this is not allowed, it is easy to get a consensus that we don't want templates that say stuff like "This article brought to you by Lotterywest".

• I don't know if you (or anyone else) has promised Lotterywest that they would get a link on every article that they "sponsor", but it seems like that is the case. If not, then you wouldn't have a big problem with removing those links.
• The attribution part is OK. We can have a sentence that says: "Text for this article includes material written by Robyn Taylor." (If Robyn isn't notable then her name shouldn't be linked).
• Using div class="toccolours" is a bad idea. Most of the attribution template are simply a line of text. We don't need any background colors and borders etc.
• The picture is so small that I cannot see what it is without clicking on it to get a full-sized version. The picture should be removed, it is pointless.
• The Dr PhD MPHA looks a bit silly, it is probably better to remove that.
• "for the Shire of Toodyay" and "to expand the Toodyaypedia WikiTown project" is irrelevant text should be removed.
• The template is transcluded on just two pages: Raffaele Martelli and Annie Stack. In both articles an editsummary was used that already attributes the text to Robyn, which means that the template is not necessary.

To make a long story short; you can delete the template, or you can change it to: "Text for this article includes material written by [[Robyn Taylor]].<noinclude>[[Category:Toodyaypedia]]</noinclude>" The Quixotic Potato (talk) 05:05, 16 September 2015 (UTC)

I should probably mention that I'm the one who answered the OTRS email, which did not give a specific license but seemed to put restrictions on the re-use of the content that would make it fall under the purview of the WP:NFCC. I'd advise Gnangarra or others who are involved with the project to discuss the licensing requirements with Ms Taylor and to make sure firstly, who owns the copyright (if it's a work-for-hire, copyright might be owned by the Shire), and secondly, what license, exactly, it is released under and whether that license is compatible with Wikipedia's requirements. That's entirely unrelated to the template issues, but technically right now we violate the policy on non-free content, and if this isn't resolved soon we should put up the articles for speedy deletion on copyright grounds. When I work on OTRS emails there was a level of confidentiality that prohibited discussing the content of the emails in public and that OTRS agents could only give confirmation that an appropriate permission had been provided, if you thing more information is required you email the people involved and discuss it. Help decide the future of Wikimania

The Wikimedia Foundation is currently running a consultation on the value and planning process of Wikimania, and is open until 18 January 2016. The goals are to (1) build a shared understanding of the value of Wikimania to help guide conference planning and evaluation, and (2) gather broad community input on what new form(s) Wikimania could take (starting in 2018).

After reviewing the consultation, we'd like to hear your feedback on on this survey.

In addition, feel free to share any personal experiences you have had at at a Wikimedia movement conference, including Wikimania. We plan to compile and share back outcomes from this consultation in February.

• All the COI edit content should be removed, if there is any content that you think could be added it should be discussed before hand to ensure we dont inadvertently introduce a bias and any sources from a primary source with the coi should be corroborated by an independent source which would then be used in preference to the COI source. Reclassification of Mullalyup, Western Australia

Re the second paragraph in this edit...
Mullalyup, Western Australia looks like more than a stub to me, so reclassifying it as "start class" seems reasonable. Your use of the plural in "reclassing Noongar stubs" suggests there may be other articles - perhaps one of those others might better illustrate your point. Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Gnangarra. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

• Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
• A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

What's new?

The Collaboration team is delighted to publish its first newsletter! Your feedback is welcome.

This quarter the team will focus on improving Special:RecentChanges and create a ReviewStream, a new feed designed to improve the edit-review process. Both are part of the new Edit Review Improvements project.

Notifications [ More information · Help pages ]

Recent changes

• Documentation concerning Notifications types has been updated. That page is ready for translations. [2]
• For developers, how to create a new Notification type has been updated. [3]
• Tools owners will be notified when OAuth app changes state. [4]
• When you edit text and mention a new username they are notified if you add your signature. Before this only happened under certain conditions. [5]
• Users are notified if they are mentioned in a section where you add your own signature even if you edit more than one section. Before, users were not notified if you edited more than one section in one edit. [6]
• Sometimes when you mention another user they don't get a notification. Now you can get a notification when you successfully send out a mention to someone or be told if they did not get a notification. This is an opt-in option in your preferences. [7][8]
• On Notifications, the badge is colored if you have some notifications. If you see these notifications, the badge will turn grey on all wikis instead of just the local one. [9]

Problems

• For some users, cross-wiki notifications haven't been working properly. The count has been wrong when only cross-wiki notifications were present. The cross-wiki bundle has been showing only the names of wikis and not the actual notifications. It has been fixed. [10][11]
• When a title was created with some wikitext inside of it, Notifications were not linking that title when they were mentioned. This is now fixed. [12]
• Some Notifications messages were not supporting {{GENDER:}}. This is now fixed. [13]

Future changes

• On Special:Notifications, pages and counts related to disabled notification types will not be shown anymore. [14]

Flow [ More information · Help pages ]

Recent changes

• Flow is available as a Beta feature on Greek Wikipedia. [15]
• A satisfaction survey was conducted concerning Flow in September 2016. Results will be published in December 2016. [16]
• Wikitext interface for Flow is now using a monospaced font. [17]
• It is now possible to moderate a Flow topic that have been resolved without re-opening it. [18]
• It is now possible to watch and unwatch topics directly from the Notification panel. [19]

Problems

• It is not possible to enable or disable Flow as a Beta feature on wikis where that option is available. This is under investigation. [20]
• Some Flow messages were not supporting {{GENDER:}}. This is now fixed. [21]

Future changes

• Communities that have Flow enabled manually on user talk pages will be asked to move on to a Beta feature activation to simplify the process. [22]
• Notifications related to Flow will be grouped on your Notifications preferences. It will be easier to choose which Notifications you want to have from Flow. [23]

Edit Review Improvements [ More information ]

Recent changes

• Informations about Edit Review Improvements project have been published. That page is ready for translations. [24]
• ReviewStream feed product description is available. ReviewStream is a machine-readable feed that’s designed to be used by a variety of edit-review tools.

Future changes

• Some improvements will be done to Special:RecentChanges, by adding new filters based on ORES.
  • Some tests are done with users to refine the design of those filters. You can volunteer for such tests. [25]
  • Communities that already have ORES goodfaith and damaging filters enabled will be contacted to try that change as a Beta feature. [26]

• On that newsletter, some particular items are highlighted by an icon, to ease reading. The icon highlights items that may interest volunteer translators and the icon highlights items that are relevant for readers with technical knowledge.

Yes Ingrid is managing projects across 3 Universities in Perth as well as a number of secondary and primary schools across the whole state, we are currently working on the plan for first semester starts in March 2017 for some 400-500 students. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Gnangarra.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

Our quarterly goal is to add filters to the Recent Changes page, that show ORES good-faith and damaging tests and filters around new users. The work on this is proceeding mostly as planned. We hope it shall be available as a Beta feature (only on wikis where ORES is available as a Beta feature) before the end of the quarter.

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Old block submitted for your review

While going through some old categories, I came across User talk:222.64.218.33. It looks like you left a warning about a temporary block, but then blocked the IP indefinitely as a "Spam / advertising-only account". I don't see a history of a abuse from this IP outside that one day, and it's been blocked since April 2010. • It wasnt a misclick as such it was part of a series of chasing spamming accounts from what was WikiTravel of wikipedia articles in 2010. In 2012 when it was forked into Wikivoyage and Wikivoyage became part of the Wikimedia Community the spamming stopped and became interwiki links. The IP once blocked couldnt continue with the spamming that is the whole the purpose of a block, but yeah there wouldnt be any reaily apparent reasonings for maintaining that block any further, I'll remove it. What's new?

A decision has been made about how the Recent Changes filtering scheme will affect current ORES beta feature users. When this new filtering system rolls out as part of the beta, it will replace the current ORES display on the Recent Changes page. That means the automatic color coding, the red “r” symbol and the “hide probably good edits” filter will go away, to be replaced by the new, more nuanced set of filters and user-defined color coding. All other pages that have ORES features, like Watchlist and Related Changes, will remain as they are now for ORES beta users. We think those pages could also benefit from the new filtering system. But we'll wait to see how users react to the beta test—and make any necessary changes—before we start spreading the new UI around. That's the plan as it currently stands. As always, please let us know if you have any thoughts, in any language.

• Due to a bug, it was not possible to activate Flow on user talk pages as a Beta feature. This is possible again for wikis that have that feature. [33]
• Flow boards can be moved without constraints. However, this requires the move-Flow-board right. [34]
