Reference URL names
edit@Kerry Raymond: Thank you for your comments about the use of URL's in references. This has been very helpful. Yesterday I updated a few stations along the lines you suggested - a couple because someone else was also making similar changes to two stations such as Clyde railway station, Sydney using the reference as set up as the first reference in my sandbox here. It then struck me that possible we could direct to the excel file - so I created the second reference. This also works but it means that in the second one you need to sign in before you get anything while in the first one the sign in is not required until until you select the excel file from the first page referenced. Do you have any thoughts on this before I go and change up to 100 stations which need to be updated.Fleet Lists (talk) 03:04, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
- I think it's better to link directly to the file the reader will want to see,not a URL that leads to the file they want to so. No matter which you link to, they have to sign up to see the information they want. Is this a situation where creating a template might be the best solution (rather than repeat it manually)? Regardless of whether a template is the best solution, if you want to avoid updating all 100 stations, I may be able to do it in AutoWikiBrowser (at much less effort) *if* I know which stations are to be done (do they have a particular characteristic, such as being a category or do they linking to a specific article or do they use a particular template) and what is the change to do done (e.g. you point me to an manually-done example). - @Kerry Raymond:Thank you - very helpful as usual. Leave the updating to me as it will give me something to do. I have been spending more time on this as I have very little else to do at the moment. I have even got into some areas such as Western Sydney University where I found an old comment that one campus had opened recently when I know my daughter went there back in 1994 - it opened in 1989. But while on that, can you have a look at Talk:Western_Sydney_University_Bankstown_Campus#Merging_into_Western_Sydney_University which I have just put up. I will cover more personal reply by email. Adjacent Stations
edit@Cards84664:I thought I would try to set up the new format for Strathfield railway station. This raised some questions:
- For Sydney Trains all lines uses the same system so I had no problem there but for NSW TrainLink two different systems are used "NSW TrainLink intercity" and "NSW TrainLink" How should I differentiate between those two as they both use the same title? PS I think I may have since resolved that.
- One of the lines has a 'branch' parameter which does not appear to have an equivalent. How should we handle that?
- Please feel free to update my Sandbox to show how that should be achieved.
- What more information do you need to set up the module you referred to? Fleet Lists (talk) 06:12, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- I have created Module:Adjacent stations/Sydney Trains and Module:Adjacent stations/NSW Trainlink, everything you see on those modules is the minimum needed to generate for this station, station disambiguation and all. As more stations on the same line are converted, the process speeds up exponentially. For the branch parameter, that can be replaced with |type in complex situations, or |note-mid and |to-left / |to-right with the intended station, as I did here. Cards84664 14:00, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Cards84664:Thank You - that clears it up pretty well. As I am still involved in another exercise, it will take a few weeks yet before I get into this seriously.Fleet Lists (talk) 22:44, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- @PhilipTerryGraham and Marcnut1996:It has been suggested to me that we should update all railway stations in New South Wales to use the newer Adjacent stations template to define the previous and next stations. I have been supplied with the necessary modules (see above) for Sydney Trains and NSW Trainlink although we should probably rename the latter NSW TrainLink. A similar module will need to be created for Sydney Metro. The modules as supplied contain the information to cover the various requirements for Strathfield railway station as I had set up here in my Sandbox. I have since selected a simpler station like Emu Plains railway station see changes in [1] to use the new modules as a test. These modules will replace the various s-line and s-rail templates which are currently in use. The modules will needs to be progressively updates for the various stations which have either a New South Wales or Sydney suffix which are considered non standard. We seem to have lost the facility to test whether articles with a suffix were present which eliminated the need to define such stations specifically, and also for additional lines which do not operate through Strathfield. This is going to be a big job updating all stations to use the new set up. Any comments please. Fleet Lists (talk) 03:40, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
