Cepstrum question
editF, you put "*computation of the logarithm of the spectral amplitude (directly as a complex value or indirectly in terms of its absolute square, real part, or complex argument)". I don't understand. Sure nobody would use the logarithm of the real part of the complex spectral amplitude, would they? And what does "complex argument" mean here? The argument is the phase of the amplitude, right? That's already a logarithm (the imaginary part of the complex logarithm); not something you'd take a logarithm of. Maybe the "its" refers sometimes to the spectral amplitude, and sometimes to the logarithm? If I understood the intent, I could help fix it. Dicklyon (talk) 17:59, 8 March 2021 (UTC)

- Well, the text ("setting the phase of the spectrum to zero") contradicts the formula, F^-1{log|F{f(t)}|}. I thought the text was more fitting to the name (real), so I was inclined to correct the formula, replacing the magnitude for the real-part operator. But now I've checked a source and it seems the formula is correct, the text is incorrect, and the title is just misleading: y=real(ifft(log(abs(fft(x))))); [1]. fgnievinski (talk) 07:04, 9 March 2021 (UTC)

Repurposed drugs for Covid19
editHi, the re-purposed drug section for COVID-19 should really have the controversy around the many different drugs that have been tried. In particular, ivermectin has a wealth of studies behind it suggesting that it does work and only a few studies behind it saying it does not work. There has been active suppression of information about this drug. I feel that all of that ought to be covered in Wikipedia which should remain agnostic as an overall body. I would like permission to add that information, in the context of the controversy. - Hmm, my comment was about the sidebar, not the "Doppler". I still believe it's very wrong to call the effect just "Doppler". If you really wish, add a comment that sometimes it may be called like that. But this doesn't belong to the Intro. And a citation to an essentially internal document is not a proof. Technicality
editPlease re-read WP:TECHNICAL, which is one of the key criteria for a good article. Euclidean distance is a concept studied in secondary school, so the bulk of the article and especially its lead needs to be understandable to that audience. Putting in technical content about metric spaces, early in the article, is a bad idea. The article focuses on distances between pairs of points, and not on spaces of distances, at least until the "Generalizations" section. —David Eppstein (talk) 18:45, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
- @David Eppstein: Agreed, that's why I had proposed to define the Euclidean distance in terms of Pythagora's law, which every student should know, and would also allow a concise non-circular definition of Euclidean space. - Defining distance in terms of the Pythagorean theorem is not a way to make things less technical. So I find it hard to understand what you mean by "agreed". Stop adding advanced concepts to material that must be readable by middle school students. You are making the articles less readable, making the encyclopedia worse, and making more work for others running around after you cleaning up the problems you are making.
- The distance between two points is a concept clearly understandable to middle school students. A metric space, fulfilling abstract axioms, with infinitely many points and distances between them, is a much more advanced concept. It is like the difference between first-order and second-order logic. You keep adding text that would make the article start out saying something about "Euclidean metric between two points", which is incorrect and a type error. Citation overkill
editA recent edit of yours to Root locus analysis added 9 citations to the page, all to verify a single sentence. This is citation WP:OVERKILL, resulting in an article that's more difficult to read. Is there a particular reason this many are required (in which case they could be merged into one larger citation) or would it be better to trim them down? The challenged notability of "Spirule" doesn't seem like it requires more than one or two sources, though I agree that the manual is poor for establishing notability due to being a primary source rather than a secondary one. - Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
- As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.
- Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.
- The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.
- Following a community referendum, the arbitration policy has been modified to remove the ability for users to appeal remedies to Jimbo Wales.

Interface administrator changes
- The tag filter on Special:NewPages and revision history pages can now be inverted. This allows hiding edits made by automated tools. (T334338)
- Special:BlockedExternalDomains is a new tool that allows easier blocking of plain domains (and their subdomains). This is more easily searchable and is faster for the software to use than the existing MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. It does not support regex (for complex cases), URL path-matching, or the MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist. (T337431)
- The arbitration cases named Scottywong and AlisonW closed 10 July and 16 July respectively.
- The SmallCat dispute arbitration case is in the workshop phase.

By the way, if you'd like to try your hand at creating outlines, you can get a quick start by using the Template:Outline generator.
It must be used via substitution, like this: {{subst:Outline generator|argument 1 |argument 2}} where you replace "argument 1" with the subject name starting in small case (large case if it is normally capitalized), and "argument 2" with the subject name starting in large case). The arguments are for completing various headings and other elements within the outline.
It would be best to start an outline in your userspace, and transfer it to the main namespace when it is ready.
Don't add categories to it until after it has been moved to article space, otherwise your userspace draft will show up in the category system.

Interface administrator changes
- The WMF is working on making it possible for administrators to edit MediaWiki configuration directly. This is similar to previous work on Special:EditGrowthConfig. A technical RfC is running until November 08, where you can provide feedback.
- There is a proposed plan for re-enabling the Graph Extension. Feedback on this proposal is requested.
- Eligible editors are invited to self-nominate themselves from 12 November 2023 until 21 November 2023 to stand in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections.
- Xaosflux, RoySmith and Cyberpower678 have been appointed to the Electoral Commission for the 2023 Arbitration Committee Elections. BusterD is the reserve commissioner.
- Following a motion, the contentious topic designation of Prem Rawat has been struck. Actions previously taken using this contentious topic designation are still in force.
- Following several motions, multiple topic areas are no longer designated as a contentious topic. These contentious topic designations were from the Editor conduct in e-cigs articles, Liancourt Rocks, Longevity, Medicine, September 11 conspiracy theories, and Shakespeare authorship question cases.
- Following a motion, remedies 3.1 (All related articles under 1RR whenever the dispute over naming is concerned), 6 (Stalemate resolution) and 30 (Administrative supervision) of the Macedonia 2 case have been rescinded.
- Following a motion, remedy 6 (One-revert rule) of the The Troubles case has been amended.
- An arbitration case named Industrial agriculture has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case close 8 November.
- The Articles for Creation backlog drive is happening in November 2023, with 700+ drafts pending reviews for in the last 4 months or so. In addition to the AfC participants, all administrators and New Page Patrollers can conduct reviews using the helper script, Yet Another AFC Helper Script, which can be enabled in the Gadgets settings. ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message
editHello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}

- Following a talk page discussion, the Administrators' accountability policy has been updated to note that while it is considered best practice for administrators to have notifications (pings) enabled, this is not mandatory. Administrators who do not use notifications are now strongly encouraged to indicate this on their user page.
- Following a motion, the Extended Confirmed Restriction has been amended, removing the allowance for non-extended-confirmed editors to post constructive comments on the "Talk:" namespace. Now, non-extended-confirmed editors may use the "Talk:" namespace solely to make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided that their actions are not disruptive.
- The Arbitration Committee has announced a call for Checkusers and Oversighters, stating that it will currently be accepting applications for CheckUser and/or Oversight permissions at any point in the year.
- Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 11, 2023 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.

- Following the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Aoidh, Cabayi, Firefly, HJ Mitchell, Maxim, Sdrqaz, ToBeFree, Z1720.
- Following a motion, the Arbitration Committee rescinded the restrictions on the page name move discussions for the two Ireland pages that were enacted in June 2009.
- The arbitration case Industrial agriculture has been closed.
- The New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in January 2024 to reduce the backlog of articles in the new pages feed. Currently, there is a backlog of over 13,000 unreviewed articles awaiting review. Sign up here to participate!

- An RfC about increasing the inactivity requirement for Interface administrators is open for feedback.
- Pages that use the JSON contentmodel will now use tabs instead of spaces for auto-indentation. This will significantly reduce the page size. (T326065)
- Following a motion, the Arbitration Committee adopted a new enforcement restriction on January 4, 2024, wherein the Committee may apply the 'Reliable source consensus-required restriction' to specified topic areas.
- Community feedback is requested for a draft to replace the "Information for administrators processing requests" section at WP:AE.
- Voting in the 2024 Steward elections will begin on 06 February 2024, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 27 February 2024, 14:00 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
- A vote to ratify the charter for the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) is open till 2 February 2024, 23:59:59 (UTC) via Secure Poll. All eligible voters within the Wikimedia community have the opportunity to either support or oppose the adoption of the U4C Charter and share their reasons. The details of the voting process and voter eligibility can be found here.
- Community Tech has made some preliminary decisions about the future of the Community Wishlist Survey. In summary, they aim to develop a new, continuous intake system for community technical requests that improves prioritization, resource allocation, and communication regarding wishes. Read more

- Phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship review has concluded. Several proposals have passed outright and will proceed to implementation, including creating a discussion-only period (3b) and administrator elections (13) on a trial basis. Other successful proposals, such as creating a reminder of civility norms (2), will undergo further refinement in Phase II. Proposals passed on a trial basis will be discussed in Phase II, after their trials conclude. Further details on specific proposals can be found in the full report.
- Partial action blocks are now in effect on the English Wikipedia. This means that administrators have the ability to restrict users from certain actions, including uploading files, moving pages and files, creating new pages, and sending thanks. T280531
- The arbitration case Conflict of interest management has been closed.
- This may be a good time to reach out to potential nominees to ask if they would consider an RfA.

- Following an RfC, there is a new criterion for speedy deletion: C4, which
applies to unused maintenance categories, such as empty dated maintenance categories for dates in the past
. - A request for comment is open to discuss whether Notability (species) should be adopted as a subject-specific notability guideline.
- Following a motion, remedies 5.1 and 5.2 of World War II and the history of Jews in Poland (the topic and interaction bans on My very best wishes, respectively) were repealed.
- Remedy 3C of the German war effort case ("Cinderella157 German history topic ban") was suspended for a period of six months.
- The arbitration case Historical Elections is currently open. Proposed decision is expected by 3 September 2024 for this case.
- Editors can now enter into good article review circles, an alternative for informal quid pro quo arrangements, to have a GAN reviewed in return for reviewing a different editor's nomination.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in September 2024 to reduce the number of unreviewed articles and redirects in the new pages feed. Currently, there is a backlog of over 13,900 articles and 26,200 redirects awaiting review. Sign up here to participate!

editHi Fgnievinski. On 2024, September 8 you created what was effectively a new article at Vector quantity. See your diff. It is a relatively small and not-yet-mature article. Over the next 25 minutes you edited a number of redirects so that the redirect target was no longer Euclidean vector but, instead, was your new article Vector quantity. Those edits include Free vector, Bound vector, Physical vector, Vector (physics), Vector (classical mechanics), Sliding vector, and Vector physical quantity.
Vector quantity is inappropriate as a redirect target for these important titles and concepts in physics. The article is small and only a day old. I have rated it as stub class. Seeing you clearly object to the article Euclidean vector as the redirect target, a more appropriate target is the excellent article at Vector (mathematics and physics).
Interestingly, there is an existing redirect for Vector (physics and mathematics) which takes the reader to Vector (mathematics and physics). Why would the redirect for Vector (physics) take the reader to a different target article than the one for Vector (physics and mathematics)? I have amended the redirect for Vector (physics) to change the target to Vector (mathematics and physics). I will leave the others for you to amend.
Your new article at Vector quantity is a stub class article. Please do not use it as a redirect target. Instead, please use either Vector (mathematics and physics) or Euclidean vector. Thank you. Dolphin (t) 04:50, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- Vector (mathematics and physics) is just a summary-style umbrella for other articles where the content is actually developed. Before I included an automatic excerpt of Vector quantity, there was very little content about physics. It also suffers from a lack of focus, covering tuples as well as more abstract non-geometric vectors.
- Euclidean vector partially overlaps with Vector quantity. But not all physical vectors are Euclidean vectors, as described in the new article. The concept of sliding vector was not covered before; it's best explained together with the concepts of bound vector and free vector. Plus, the formulation of geometric vectors as a directed line segment (DLM, requiring 6 numbers in space) is very distinct from an Euclidean vector (requiring only 3 coordinates in space). The article on Euclidean vectors used to give the wrong impression about a bound vector, not recognizing it involves twice as many coordinates. It also dismissed DLS as if it were only when needed when drawing a vector graphically. Actually, sources now cited in the new article are emphatic DLS is embodied in the very definition of "vector from A to B".
- For the reasons above, only Physical vector should be retargeted, for consistency with Vector (physics). I'd like to also propose moving section Euclidean vector#Physics into the new article, Vector quantity. fgnievinski (talk) 05:29, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for your explanation! Every article on Wikipedia about vectors is a technical article. Wikipedia has some excellent guidance at WP:Make technical articles understandable based on the theme that articles are read by a very broad audience - ranging from Users such as yourself with a high level of expertise in the subject, down to other Users and casual readers who are here out of curiosity to find out what a vector is.
- Readers who activate the redirect at Vector (physics) are certain to include many who have no expertise in the subject of vectors. I altered the target of this redirect in order that it meets the guidance at "Make technical articles understandable". I think the same perspective should be taken with Vector (classical mechanics) and Vector physical quantity.
- You can argue that the redirects at Free vector, Bound vector, Physical vector and Sliding vector are less likely to be activated by readers who have no expertise in each of these topics. So perhaps you can argue that these redirects don't need to be changed. However, you must anticipate that other Users, and particularly members of the Physics Wikiproject, will judge these redirects using the criteria at "Make technical articles understandable". - Perhaps I should clarify my previous post by adding that readers who are new to the concept of vectors need, and will be able to comprehend, information of the kind found at Vector space#Arrows in the plane. It is debatable as to exactly which of our articles would serve these readers the best. I think the present content of Vector quantity is too limited, and far too specialised, to be helpful to readers with little or no knowledge of the concept of a vector. For these readers, these redirects should have a target article that is better at making the concept understandable. For example, a diagram or two will be vital. - @Dolphin51 Yes, some illustrations are much needed in vector quantity. I don't mind retargeting the redirects while that stub article is not expanded. However, the more mathematical articles, such as Euclidean vector and Vector space, are not a good home for the physics and engineering concept. The reason is equipollence: the mathematical vector cannot represent off-origin directed line segments, such as bound vectors. - I'm considering rewriting "A Euclidean vector may possess a definite initial point and terminal point" as "A “vector” may possess a definite initial point and terminal point" and moving it from [[Euclidean vector#Overview|]] to Directed line segment, alternatively to Vector quantity or Vector (mathematics and physics). - Following a discussion, the discussion-only period proposal that went for a trial to refine the requests for adminship (RfA) process has been discontinued.
- Following a request for comment, Administrator recall is adopted as a policy.
- Mass deletions done with the Nuke tool now have the 'Nuke' tag. This change will make reviewing and analyzing deletions performed with the tool easier. T366068
- RoySmith, Barkeep49 and Cyberpower678 have been appointed to the Electoral Commission for the 2024 Arbitration Committee Elections. ThadeusOfNazereth and Dr vulpes are reserve commissioners.
- Eligible editors are invited to self-nominate from 3 November 2024 until 12 November 2024 to stand in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections.
- The Arbitration Committee is seeking volunteers for roles such as clerks, access to the COI queue, checkuser, and oversight.
- An unreferenced articles backlog drive is happening in November 2024 to reduce the backlog of articles tagged with {{Unreferenced}}. You can help reduce the backlog by adding citations to these articles. Sign up to participate!

editArbCom 2024 Elections voter message
editHello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}

Administrators' newsletter – December 2024
editNews and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2024).
Interface administrator changes
- Following an RFC, the policy on restoration of adminship has been updated. All former administrators may now only regain the tools following a request at the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard within 5 years of their most recent admin action. Previously this applied only to administrators deysopped for inactivity.
- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, T5, has been enacted. This applies to template subpages that are no longer used.
- Technical volunteers can now register for the 2025 Wikimedia Hackathon, which will take place in Istanbul, Turkey. Application for travel and accommodation scholarships is open from November 12 to December 10, 2024.
- The arbitration case Yasuke (formerly titled Backlash to diversity and inclusion) has been closed.
- An arbitration case titled Palestine-Israel articles 5 has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case will close on 14 December.
