New Page Review newsletter December 2019

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

Question Comment about Determined to Develop

Hi Edwardx - I wanted to ask about the UPE and other tags on the Determined to Develop article. I appreciate everything about Wikipedia and have just started doing my first edits. I am not paid and do not have a direct relationship with the nonprofit organization mentioned here, other than I have visited Malawi on two occasions and have seen first hand the good works they are doing. I do have direct knowledge of the issues facing youth in Malawi regarding the lack of education and specifically wanted to focus my initial Wikipedia contributions on a topic that I have a direct knowledge about. I have added a few new references and updated the entry to hopefully assist in removing any of the tags as I don't want my inexperience as someone editing on Wikipedia to reflect poorly for this organization. Has enough sources been added to eliminate the UPE and Notability tags? Thank you for taking the time to help me through this if you can. Sincerely, Thepadguy (talk) 05:57, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

DYK for John Moutoussamy

On 31 December 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article John Moutoussamy, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that John Moutoussamy is the only African-American to have designed a high-rise building—which featured "colorful walls and psychedelic carpets"—in the Chicago Loop? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/John Moutoussamy. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, John Moutoussamy), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Levy Sekgapane: 30 December 2019

Hello, Edwardx.

Thank you for your remarks. Levy Sekgapane (about whom I have written an article) is not related to me; he is not a friend, colleague, co-worker, employer, competitor.

I did not receive any payment for writing that page; all my Wikipedia activity is non-profit. I'm just interested in opera and I create pages about artists I'm interested in and I'm willing to correct all my mistakes (incorrect links, quotes, etc.) resulting from misunderstanding of the rules as soon as possible.

Would you mind deleting an "undisclosed paid" template you've put in that article (Levy Sekgapane)?

Regards, Jan W. Kusiak (talk) 18:55, 30 December 2019 (UTC)

Thank you, Jan W. Kusiak. You need to respond to the COI notice on your userpage, not here. Despite your assertions, your editing activity has many of the hallmarks of paid/COI editors. Anyway, as DGG has moved it into draftspace, you should work on improving it there. Edwardx (talk) 01:00, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

Thank you very much,Whispyhistory. 2020 is going great so far, and I hope you have an amazing year. Edwardx (talk) 12:52, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
The first 13 hours have been completely AFD free. I believe that this is a statistically significant trend. Philafrenzy (talk) 12:59, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
Based on the available data, one can project that 2020 will be AfD-free. Wonderful news. Edwardx (talk) 13:05, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
You both have a great attitude. Can one of you remove the tag on this? Or...fix it ...or tell me what to do. I am at a loss with it. I'll look at some Russians. Whispyhistory (talk) 19:55, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
We discussed this on another one. Some of the sources are in full in references and others in citations. I suggest that you integrate the four books in citations into references by expanding the first mention of that source in references. Also, abbreviated refs should be in the form Gandhi, 2004, p. 417. not Gandhi 2004 p. 417 Some are surname first and others first name first. All should have a full stop at the end. Some have publisher then place and other the reverse. For instance "Pandit, Vijaya Lakshmi (1945) ’Prison Days. Calcutta: The Signet Press" should be "Pandit, Vijaya Lakshmi. (1945) Prison Days. Calcutta: The Signet Press." It's about following a consistent approach, whatever it is, and attention to detail so that your good work in the body is not undermined by the references. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:21, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
Have done a bit of work (adding categories etc), and removed the tag - the refs are much better than many articles. Edwardx (talk) 00:40, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
Are you trying to nick my reviewer by offering better terms and conditions? Philafrenzy (talk) 12:53, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
All I can offer is the occasional barnstar, kind words, and that vague fuzzy warm glow you get when contributing to the sum of human knowledge. Edwardx (talk) 17:51, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
Are you still working on that barnstar-based cryptocurrency? Philafrenzy (talk) 19:44, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
Starcoin ICO is on 12 January, exclusively in the Oak, at par with a 'spoons coffee. Edwardx (talk) 21:51, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
Do you not feel that may be a bit ambitious? Perhaps peg it to those little bags of sugar they have, or a tin of mackerel? Philafrenzy (talk) 22:03, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
Due to softening market sentiment, now pegged to a coffee refill, and rebranded as barncoin. Read about money macks before, more portable than Rai stones. Edwardx (talk) 01:56, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
Thank you both. I can review for both of you...and i appreciate all you both do. Please share the bubbles. Whispyhistory (talk) 22:11, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
Nice clean layout here. Another way of doing the references. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:56, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

DYK for Isobel D. Thornley

On 4 January 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Isobel D. Thornley, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Help in linking!

Hi, I want your help in linking some words in Shamsheer Vayalil article, these are "physician" and "philanthropist" (in the first line of starting paragraph). In early life paragraph please add Porur in between "Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute" and "Chennai". Thanks. (223.230.151.127 (talk) 06:38, 4 January 2020 (UTC))

Both are common enough terms and do not need to be linked. Have done some editing to the article. Edwardx (talk) 17:01, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
  • Sir, the edits which you did in the article of Shamsheer Vayalil are really amazing. Now the article is perfectly in shape but:

1.) I noticed that from occupation column in infobox you removed "radiologist". At least that shouldn't be removed. If you look in other article like of Bill Gates (occupation column in infobox) you will find that all his occupations are mentioned. So, in Shamsheer Vayalil article (in infobox)also at least his former occupation should be mentioned because before becoming businessman he was a "Radiologist". 2.)From alma mater column in infobox you removed "Chennai" that should also be restored. 3.)The word "physician" in the starting paragraph should be linked. Overall your work is really really appreciable.

Thanks. (223.230.151.127 (talk) 18:16, 4 January 2020 (UTC))

Thank you for your kind words. I have compromised and made the lead "an Indian billionaire businessman and former radiologist", and added "former radiologist" to the occupation field in the infobox. I think it improbable that he still does any work as an actual radiologist, hence the "former" and why it comes after "businessman", which is what he now is. Hope that is all okay with you! Edwardx (talk) 22:01, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
  • Sir, I respect your opinion. You told that "it is improbable that he does any work as an actual radiologist". It might be true but according to me he still work as a "radiologist" in his own hospital.

I want to put some light on a old news: Do you remember Eman Ahmed? She was heaviest woman on Earth(2017) who unfortunately died. She was being treated in 'VPS Healthcare' under guidance of Shamsheer Vayalil. He told a famous newspaper "The Times of India" that he "himself examined" Eman Ahmed reports. This proofs that he still work as a "radiologist". If you don't believe then you can go to archive version of " TOI" and cross examine his statement. This is the reason I requested you to lead the article as " Indian Radiologist and billionaire businessman. Sir, I am learner in front of you. You have given your 15 valuable years to wikipedia and have more experience than me. I don't want to challenge your valuable work but I have expressed what I think. So, I came to the final conclusion that he (Shamsheer Vayalil) is first a "Radiologist" then after "Businessman". We can't assume that if anyone has started a new work he might have left his old work. He might be doing his old work also and after all he's a doctor and doctors don't leave their work, for example look at Devi Shetty and Naresh Trehan they are also businessmen but still performing cardiac surgeries because both are cardiac surgeons.I hope this time I'm clear enough to explain you everything properly. If I by mistake hurt you emotions then I'm really sorry 😔. Thanks. (223.230.128.8 (talk) 23:46, 4 January 2020 (UTC))

That's all fine, and you argue your case well. I have tweaked the article further. I did not add Chennai to the infobox, as we really should try to only include the most important things there, and "Chennai" shows up on rollover, and is in the article. You never stop learning on Wikipedia, and even after all of this time, I believe my editing gets better with every passing year. I have done many articles on billionaires and they can be tricky to get the tone right, not just the facts. Edwardx (talk) 01:41, 5 January 2020 (UTC)
  • Sir, I would have done all this myself but I was afraid that I might vandalize the article. The reason behind is when I make the changes in the article and publish it the major portion of the article get wiped off. I don't know why and how it happens but I'm totally scared about it. Before dropping a request at your talk page I saw your wonderful work in Yusuff Ali M.A. article.Like you I'm also very much interested in billionaire's article. Please! give me permission to drop a request at your talk page related to more betterment of Shamsheer Vayalil article.

Thanks.   (223.230.128.8 (talk) 05:03, 5 January 2020 (UTC))

Edit request 5 January 2019!

Sir, sorry to say that you by mistake removed "Parent(s) name" column as well as "awards" column (at least three notable awards name)from infobox. As per Template:Infobox person# Inline lists these columns should be present there (although parents name are present in the early life paragraph and separate awards and accolades paragraph is present in the article). I think that should be restored. In each and every wikipedia article you'll find these two columns.

Sir, when you cleaned up the infobox of Anil Ambani article you didn't remove the respective degrees (i.e. BSc. and MBA) from alma mater column although detailed information about his education is present in "Early life and education paragraph" but in Shamsheer Vayalil article you removed the respective degrees(i.e. MBBS and MD) from the alma mater column in infobox. I think that should also be restored. Please! give your opinion also.

Thanks. (223.230.128.8 (talk) 05:33, 5 January 2020 (UTC))

Sorry, but I cannot spare any more time to discuss these point in minuts detail. The article is in a reasonable state now, and there is just too much else on Wikipedia that needs adding or improving. Edwardx (talk) 11:19, 5 January 2020 (UTC)
Please read Template:Infobox person. "Names of parents; include only if they are independently notable or particularly relevant." Neither criterion is fulfilled in this case. Edwardx (talk) 13:03, 5 January 2020 (UTC)
  • Oh! I got it but I'm in dilemma. In Gautam Adani article the same thing happened. Name of his parents are indicated although they are "not" independently notable or relevant. What's your opinion in this?

Thanks. (223.230.128.8 (talk) 13:50, 5 January 2020 (UTC))

Just removed them - see my edit summary there. Edwardx (talk) 14:28, 5 January 2020 (UTC)
  The Original Barnstar
Sir, your contribution to Shamsheer Vayalil article is really appreciable. This proves that you are veteran editor. You really deserve this. (223.230.128.8 (talk) 14:40, 5 January 2020 (UTC))

  • Sir, I want to tell you that there are more articles on Wikipedia where Parent(s) name present without independently notable (in infobox). These are:

Shiv Nadar , Benu Gopal Bangur , Ashwin Choksi , Rahul Bhatia , Ashwin Dani , Abhay Vakil and many more. These all are billionaires. So, what to do,should I remove their "parent(s) name column" from the infobox? I mean to say if there is a rule then it should be applicable to all articles on wikipedia. Or the other option is to restore Shamsheer Vayalil "parent(s) name column in infobox". Thanks. (223.230.128.8 (talk) 18:13, 5 January 2020 (UTC))

Okay, I have looked at all of those. Edwardx (talk) 19:57, 5 January 2020 (UTC)
Sir, look in Anand Mahindra & Ajay Piramalarticles, parent(s) name are present in the infobox in spite of being independently notable or relevant.

Thanks. (223.230.131.199 (talk) 12:02, 7 January 2020 (UTC))

Done. Edwardx (talk) 12:35, 7 January 2020 (UTC)
In Shamsheer Vayalil's article your opinion for adding Pravasi Bharatiya Samman in awards column (in infobox) is genuine. It's definitely a notable award (highest civilian award given to NRI's). When you'll see Shiv Nadar article you'll find that in award column (in infobox) Padma Bhushan is mentioned (which is also a highest civilian award given to notable people of India). Shiv Nadar has got more than 10 awards but in the award column (infobox) it's mentioned about Padma Bhushan only. Same with Amitabh Bacchan also. I hope I'm clear enough to explain my point.

Thanks. (223.230.146.126 (talk) 12:41, 9 January 2020 (UTC))

Hi, Edwardx! I see you've put back the template with the mark 'still too promotional'. I really need your help here, what parts should be rewritten? Maybe I can somehow shorten Philanthropy and Social Entrepreneurship (though the projects are important and deserve mentioning to better cover the biography, there are still some parts to cut out). If that's the issue, than I see what to do, but what if there's something else? Thanks in advance! --AlbertTonoyan (talk) 13:48, 23 December 2019 (UTC)

Based on your reply and your userpage, if you worked in 2017 and 2018 for an organistaion that Vardanyan co-founded, then you have a conflict of interest in respect of Vardanyan that you should be declaring. Edwardx (talk) 23:24, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
OK. How to do it right? And after my explanations can you tell me what should be changed in the article? --AlbertTonoyan (talk) 18:40, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
As I was able, so everything was made out: I stated with the help of a template the conflict of interests, on my page and on the discussion page of the article. --AlbertTonoyan (talk) 19:13, 26 December 2019 (UTC)

Thank you, 7&6=thirteen, for your input and kind words. An article about Imelda's shoes is an interesting idea. Went to see a big exhibition on shoes at the V&A in 2015, and I recall she was mentioned. The V&A show led to Lionel Bussey, although Philafrenzy did most of the work. All it needs is a relative to put their DNA on the internet for genealogical purposes and at least her identity can be found. Draft:Bruce Flatt was recently un-accepted and draftified because the reviewer who accepted my AfC submission more than a year ago was later blocked as a sock puppet. I've seen that you have edited and created articles on executives like Flatt in the past. I would very much appreciate some help improving this draft before it is submitted once more to AfC. For full disclosure, I work for Brookfield Asset Management and have committed to avoid directly editing pages related to the company. Akane Takada

As you know, I've recently been expanding the Akane Takada article. I'm thinking about nominating it for DYK as a 5x expansion. Possible hooks: "...that after a knee injury at age 12, ballet dancer Akane Takada had to wait for a year and a half to grow large enough for corrective surgery?" or "...that Akane Takada was promoted to principal dancer of the Royal Ballet at the unusually young age of 26?" Given your experience in DYK and arts-related articles, I thought I'd ask you for feedback, if you have the time to take a look. If not, no worries, and thanks for starting the article in the first place. Indignant Flamingo (talk) 05:50, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

Great work, Indignant Flamingo. Having read through your expansion, I agree with you that those are the best two hook ideas. The first one could be trimmed a bit, "...that after a knee injury aged 12, ballerina Akane Takada had to wait 18 months to grow enough for corrective surgery?". The second one looks fine as is, and although 26 may be young for a principal dancer, it does not seem "unusually young" compared to the world in general. I would suggest both, but suspect others will prefer the first one. Edwardx (talk) 14:19, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for taking a look, and for all the good work you do getting these articles into the encyclopedia. Indignant Flamingo (talk) 22:10, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
Cheers, Indignant Flamingo. We all like to have our efforts noticed. I do enjoy starting articles, but am not so diligent at getting them to a more polished state. Edwardx (talk) 22:28, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

DYK for Christopher Harborne

Speedy deletion nomination of CTS Eventim

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on CTS Eventim requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company, corporation or organization that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
