Dr. B. you are an icon around here. You were the first to tally up more than 1,500 articles for DYK, and then you initiated and ran the enormously successful World Contests. We need you to stay as the face of Wikipedia! Yoninah (talk) 00:09, 28 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Adding my voice to this. Hope you're reading this to see the voices clamouring for your return. I'm not sure what may have prompted your sudden retirement, but whatever it is, these things come and go on Wikipedia usually. Things happen that seem to make no sense, and we lose faith for a while, but ultimately what we're doing is so beneficial that it's worth sticking around for. And your contests like the Africa destubathon went over and beyond that, because they were catalysts for much larger numbers of editors to dive in and improve vital vital areas of the site. I very much hope we'll see you back to continue that good work.  — Amakuru (talk) 22:47, 28 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Fram

edit

Comment.. Fram has done a lot of work here since 2005 and is usually right about people making mistakes, but has a long history of using his admin tools to gain leverage in disputes and threaten people with blocking. A lot of people dislike him and would want to see him desysopped. I personally don't think he has the social skills to be an administrator and would support a desysop in practice, but I'm not sure even if he was stripped of his tools he'd stop what he does, he doesn't need admin tools to bully other editors, if anything it might antagonize him into becoming even more difficult. But Fram knows that there's plenty of people who could file a compelling arb case against him at any point soon which would get a lot of support and succeed in him being stripped of his admin tools or worse. There's surely enough convincing evidence of misconduct over many years.

I think beneath the facade Fram you don't like feeling stressed, the gigantic walls of text at the current arb case and your erratic comments yesterday are a dead give away. I always mirror how I'm treated, if you don't want to feel that way, look at how you approach me personally and ask yourself if you'd like to be treated the same way? You obviously enjoy Belgian comics and find them relaxing, great. I have my music. I would prefer to have a peaceful life and to try to enjoy it while it lasts, it's passing very quickly and I've spent far too much time on here. It's great that you want to help Wikipedia and build the highest quality encyclopedia, but why can't you work with people at resolving problems instead of playing the tough cop. And it's not as if you're entirely unreasonable, at times you could be almost decent and constructive when there was a bit of mutual respect shown and you cooperate with others instead of being hostile. I just ask you to take a step back and to look at yourself and ask yourself why at times you approach things the way you do. If you are genuinely concerned about my articles, you're free to work with me and I'll try to resolve issues from the dark ages if people are that worried, time-permitting as I'm serious about retiring from here as evidenced by my decline in editing. I was also serious about deleting all of the micro stubs, at the time it felt like the right approach to try to make the site as diverse as possible, but if I was to stick around I'm more interested in cleaning it fully up and building core content, the stuff which really matters and currently lacking. Just not going to leave here like this and have you treat me like the others in my absence and try to expose me as something I'm not.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:53, 6 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Milestone for mix'n'match

edit

Around the time in February when Wikidata clicked past item Q50000000, another milestone was reached: the mix'n'match tool uploaded its 1000th dataset. Concisely defined by its author, Magnus Manske, it works "to match entries in external catalogs to Wikidata". The total number of entries is now well into eight figures, and more are constantly being added: a couple of new catalogs each day is normal.

Since the end of 2013, mix'n'match has gradually come to play a significant part in adding statements to Wikidata. Particularly in areas with the flavour of digital humanities, but datasets can of course be about practically anything. There is a catalog on skyscrapers, and two on spiders.

These days mix'n'match can be used in numerous modes, from the relaxed gamified click through a catalog looking for matches, with prompts, to the fantastically useful and often demanding search across all catalogs. I'll type that again: you can search 1000+ datasets from the simple box at the top right. The drop-down menu top left offers "creation candidates", Magnus's personal favourite. m:Mix'n'match/Manual for more.

For the Wikidatan, a key point is that these matches, however carried out, add statements to Wikidata if, and naturally only if, there is a Wikidata property associated with the catalog. For everyone, however, the hands-on experience of deciding of what is a good match is an education, in a scholarly area, biographical catalogs being particularly fraught. Underpinning recent rapid progress is an open infrastructure for scraping and uploading.

Congratulations to Magnus, our data Stakhanovite!

Non-notable. Not even listed at List of Argentine films of 1970.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The 100 Skins of the Onion

edit

Open Citations Month, with its eminently guessable hashtag, is upon us. We should be utterly grateful that in the past 12 months, so much data on which papers cite which other papers has been made open, and that Wikidata is playing its part in hosting it as "cites" statements. At the time of writing, there are 15.3M Wikidata items that can do that.

Pulling back to look at open access papers in the large, though, there is is less reason for celebration. Access in theory does not yet equate to practical access. A recent LSE IMPACT blogpost puts that issue down to "heterogeneity". A useful euphemism to save us from thinking that the whole concept doesn't fall into the realm of the oxymoron.

Some home truths: aggregation is not content management, if it falls short on reusability. The PDF file format is wedded to how humans read documents, not how machines ingest them. The salami-slicer is our friend in the current downloading of open access papers, but for a better metaphor, think about skinning an onion, laboriously, 100 times with diminishing returns. There are of the order of 100 major publisher sites hosting open access papers, and the predominant offer there is still a PDF.

Red onion cross section

From the discoverability angle, Wikidata's bibliographic resources combined with the SPARQL query are superior in principle, by far, to existing keyword searches run over papers. Open access content should be managed into consistent HTML, something that is currently strenuous. The good news, such as it is, would be that much of it is already in XML. The organisational problem of removing further skins from the onion, with sensible prioritisation, is certainly not insuperable. The CORE group (the bloggers in the LSE posting) has some answers, but actually not all that is needed for the text and data mining purposes they highlight. The long tail, or in other words the onion heart when it has become fiddly beyond patience to skin, does call for a pis aller. But the real knack is to do more between the XML and the heart.

Upcoming changes to wikitext parsing

edit

Hello,

There will be some changes to the way wikitext is parsed during the next few weeks. It will affect all namespaces. You can see a list of pages that may display incorrectly at Special:LintErrors. Since most of the easy problems have already been solved at the English Wikipedia, I am specifically contacting tech-savvy editors such as yourself with this one-time message, in the hope that you will be able to investigate the remaining high-priority pages during the next month.

There are approximately 10,000 articles (and many more non-article pages) with high-priority errors. The most important ones are the articles with misnested tags and table problems. Some of these involve templates, such as infoboxes, or the way the template is used in the article. In some cases, the "error" is a minor, unimportant difference in the visual appearance. In other cases, the results are undesirable. You can see a before-and-after comparison of any article by adding ?action=parsermigration-edit to the end of a link, like this: https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Arthur_Foss?action=parsermigration-edit (which shows a difference in how {{infobox ship}} is parsed).

If you are interested in helping with this project, please see Wikipedia:Linter. There are also some basic instructions (and links to even more information) at https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-ambassadors/2018-April/001836.html You can also leave a note at WT:Linter if you have questions.

Thank you for all the good things you do for the English Wikipedia. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:18, 19 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Church of Christ (Phnom Penh)

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Church of Christ (Phnom Penh) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, a group of people, an individual animal, an organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content, or an organized event that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. 2600:6C4E:580:46B:0:E653:2549:B879 (talk) 17:32, 27 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Pretendiendo.jpg

edit

Thank you for uploading File:Pretendiendo.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

ATTENTION: This is an automated, bot-generated message. This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:02, 3 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

I am very glad and fortunat to have associated and interacted with you at least once in my life especially during the 2017 Women in Red/World Contest where I learnt lot of this about you as you worked so hard to host this great initiative which produced lots of good results. Your place is irreplaceable in Wikipedia and I was shocked to hear your retirement notice via the talk page of Women in Red. My heartiest congratulations to your magnificent Wikipedia career and I admire your dedication towards Wikipedia. Once again Wikipedia is sad to hear the announcement of a veteran Wikipedian Mr. Dr. Blofeld. You deserve this award and go ahead to pursue your other dreams. All the very best dear sir. Kal Ki Awaz moved to draftspace

edit

An article you recently created, Kal Ki Awaz, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Proposed deletion of Sauerkraut (Helme Heine)

edit

The article Sauerkraut (Helme Heine) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unsourced (since 2011) WP:STUB article with almost no content. The German Wikipedia article on which this is based is also entirely without inline sourcing. So subject fails to demonstrate passing WP:GNG.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. --IJBall (contribstalk) 02:43, 23 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Aachener Heimattheater

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Aachener Heimattheater requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company, corporation or organization that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia.
