Editing the page

edit

Hi - I'm am employee at Berkeley, and I'm trying to make sure this webpage remains up to date. I have no idea who wrote it originally or how old the copy is. I totally understand removing promotional language—I can keep the tone more neutral going forward. But a lot of the things that I updated for accuracy have been deleted.

The faculty number reference is from 2011...it's no longer correct. Numbers change every school year. Same with the average class size and student/teacher ratio. There's a missing accreditation. In the intro graph, eight buildings and 1200 students is wrong. Kindergarten to twelfth grade is wrong (we start in pre-k).

Can you please help me understand why you deleted the work I did yesterday and replaced it with old and inaccurate info? How can I make updates in a way that will be approved? Thank you for any guidance. This is my first time editing Wikipedia. Janebianchi (talk) 18:15, 10 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Janebianchi, and welcome to Wikipedia! – this is your first edit here. I'll leave you some advice on your talk-page on how to handle paid-editor disclosure and how to stay within our conflict-of-interst guidelines. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 18:35, 10 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Murillo de Aragão

edit

Hello there! My name is Bruno Vieira, from Brazil. I wrote an article about Murillo de Aragão, and the text was removed by you under the argument that it infringed copywrite. However, I have the permission of the owner to use the information of the website I used. How can I make this work? Can you help me? Bruno Furtado Vieira (talk) 11:39, 18 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Bruno Furtado Vieira (talk) 11:41, 18 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Bruno Furtado Vieira! I've left a (pre-packaged) message about copyright on your talk-page. In this case, the holder of the copyright of the text should follow the instructions here. Please be aware that text from external websites is hardly ever found suitable for inclusion in this project, so it may be more productive to simply write new text of your own.
It seems that you may have some personal or professional connection to this person; please read this guidance, and make a point of mentioning your conflict of interest whenever making any edit relating to him (including talk-page discussions). Thank you, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 16:42, 18 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Could you please undelete Ax and the Hatchetmen? I think it could be notable. Thanks, C F A 21:00, 19 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of my article

edit

Hello! Im Draco,

I recently made an article about Ioannis (Johnny) Draculis, his early life, his carrier and his projects because he is one of the youngest ever worked with big artists in the music industry. The page got deleted by you due to advertising but it wasnt intended at all. Can you get it back up and maybe change the form of the info so it wont seem to attend advertising? The point wasnt to advertise Johnny but to make people notice his work & ethic. Thank you!

Draco DracoYRN (talk) 18:33, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

No, I'm sorry, DracoYRN, that page was a blatant advertisement and I'm not prepared to restore it. If you want to try again, I suggest this: 1. read the notice I'll leave on your talk about creating autobiographies; 2. find a good number of independent reliable sources that discuss you in detail (if there aren't any, stop here); and 3. then and only then, write plain factual text including only material directly supported by your sources. Good luck! Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 18:54, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
The notice about autobiographies is already on your talk-page. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 18:56, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Alright! Thank you for your tips. Im new in Wikipedia and i really need people to guide me on my first steps. Again, nothing from this was intentional. I wasnt sure how to make the biography right for the terms of Wikipedia. I appreciate you for your help and i will make sure to check everything before i re-write any article here! Deletion of my article

edit

Hello, I noticed that the page "User:Boskovicdd/sandbox" was deleted on 20 January 2025 under G11 (Unambiguous advertising or promotion). I’m reaching out to understand more about the reason for this deletion. I wrote an article about a man that has contributed a lot in blockchain technology and science. I would like to know what is considered advertising, could I continue editing on the page that i already wrote with some changes, and how do i prevent this from happening again. Thank you for your time and help! Best regards, Boskovicdd (talk) 15:35, 22 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Boskovicdd! As you already know, I deleted User:Boskovicdd/sandbox as 'unambiguous advertising or promotion', there's little to add to that – and as such, I'm not prepared to restore it. Wikipedia articles are written in a neutral or even boring tone; they do not contain material such as "His pioneering contributions have significantly influenced areas such as industrial automation ..." or "Known for his leadership in academia ..." (please note that this person has an h-index of 11 according to Scopus). The page was also without any citations and had no independent reliable sources whatsoever. Our notability criteria for academics are here. If you want to try again, may I suggest that you follow the steps laid out in my reply to DracoYRN in the section immediately above this (timestamped 18:54, 20 January 2025)? May I also remind you that creating autobiographies is strongly discouraged in this project? Good luck! Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 16:37, 22 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

-ly hyphens

edit

Hi Justlettersandnumbers, You reverted someone's correct edit with this edit. Please see the fourth point in Section 3 ("Avoid using a hyphen after a standard -ly adverb") of the MOS. I would normally just change this and not comment, but you're an admin? Regards, Ericoides (talk) 15:22, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Well, you had me puzzled for a moment, Ericoides, but I now see that that edit was eight years ago, and also had a clear edit summary, "restore correctly-formed compound adjective". This is one of the more idiotic laws of the MOS police, right up there with not being "allowed" to use USA as an abbreviation for the name of that country – both go directly against the normal usage in the kind of English I speak (the English kind). Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 17:15, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Not really. A hyphen is included in a compound to avoid ambiguity. "A well known man" is ambiguous because it's unclear if it denotes a man who's well known, or a known man who's well. So we have the hyphen, making "a well-known man" mean a man who's well known. But in the case of adverbial -ly compounds, there can be no ambiguity. "A correctly formed phrase" is absolutely fine without a hyphen, as "a formed phrase" that's also "correctly" makes no sense. This rule is observed by all major English-language book publishers (I've worked in the industry for 30 years), so your "police" and "normal usage" seem misplaced here! Oddly, the Guardian insist on using ly- hyphens, but they also use "second world war", so what do they know? Regards, Ericoides (talk) 17:36, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
As I said, that's the variety of English I speak (and taught for forty years). And yes, it's the Second World War – my grandfather wrote a book on it. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 17:59, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'm glad we agree on "Second World War", but the hyphen rule is about correctly written rather than elegantly spoken English. That all UK/US publishers observe this omission of the -ly hyphen, combined with the coherent rationale behind it, might give one pause for thought, but I guess entrenched habits (and thank you for your forty years' service) die hard. I know I find it almost impossible to give up eating cheese. Regards and farewell, Ericoides (talk) 18:14, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Why did you delete my father's obituary?

edit

Why are deleting pages that you have nothing to do with? You've just deleted my father's obituary - https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Alister_Jason_Borthwick - citing that we linked it to an article in our local press. You could have deleted the link if for some reason it breaks Wikipedia rules, but to delete the whole obituary is disgusting! Why do you have the right to delete people from history, when you don't know them, haven't spent any time asking about them, and couldn't be bothered to contact the creator of the page, ie me. I specifically requested you not to delete the page when it was marked, and you completely ignored it. You shouldn't be allowed any access on this system, as you clearly don't wield your power with any care or thought! Earthlyideas (talk) 11:53, 1 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

I will be reporting you to the Wikipedia.

Well, hi, Earthlyideas! If you look at this page (as I assume you've already done?), you'll see that I deleted it as "G12: Unambiguous copyright infringement of https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/20767945.everyone-enjoying-legacy-hard-work---tributes-pour-norfolks-goose-man/". That's because the page was a word-for-word copy of an obituary by Donna-Louise Bishop from the Eastern Daily Press, taken from a web-page clearly marked "© 2001-2025. Newsquest Media Group Ltd". I'll leave a pre-written message on your talk about this in a moment, but for now: Wikipedia does not permit copyright violations and its copyright policy is strictly enforced. Unfortunately I have found similar problems – going back to 2007 – in William Jason Maxwell Borthwick and have blanked that and listed it at this board for investigation and clean-up.
You appear to be under some misapprehension as to what this project is: it is an encyclopaedia, with articles on topics that editors agree to be sufficiently notable to merit inclusion. It is not a place to post an obituary or write personal family histories, and it is most emphatically not the place to promote your business activities. Please read this on how to go about achieving changes to articles on any friends or family who may happen have one, and this on the obligatory disclosures to be made before making any edit relating to a business activity from which you receive or hope to receive financial benefit of any kind. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 17:57, 1 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Gotta say, “I will be reporting you to the Wikipedia” is kind of an all timer. Just great stuff. 19h00s (talk) 18:49, 1 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Information about a deleted page

edit

Hey User:Justlettersandnumbers, I hope you're having a great day!

I'm reaching out in reference to the ongoing discussion on Wikimedia Commons about this file on the Commons and its corresponding deletion request. I see you're also fairly active on Commons, but I thought it might be better to discuss this here, as I’m seeking clarification on a deleted user page, as indicated by the title of my message.

You deleted this page under the rationale G11. Could you please clarify what kind of advertising was present on the page? Was it entirely or partially related to the image in question, or was there no image at all? As a non-administrator, I can only confirm that the image was present on User:Manoj D25/sandbox (the user’s old name's sandbox), and I would appreciate it if you could check the sandbox page too.

It would be really helpful if you could look into this, as I took quite a harsh stand on the deletion request, and I want to ensure I’ve done everything correctly.

Thanks in advance for your help! --Contributor2020Talk to me here! 14:35, 3 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Contributor2020, how are you? The advertising in User:Shanthan was of the blatant or indeed vomit-inducing kind; there was a selfie-type image in the page, I don't know if that was the same as this on Commons, which I can't see. I can't see any connection in any of this to the Sandisk image you mention. Does this answer the question? Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 12:29, 4 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the information! --Contributor2020Talk to me here! 12:54, 4 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi Justlettersandnumbers. You deleted HellasCar per G7, but the file being used in the article is still around. Perhaps you could help figure out how to best deal with it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:16, 4 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes indeed, Marchjuly, now done. I tend not to worry about dealing with any local non-free images in a deleted page, as they seem just to fade away in due course. I do try to remember to nominate inappropriate images uploaded to Commons for deletion, though. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 11:37, 4 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for taking a look at this. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:39, 4 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
