Re:In appreciation of your work

Thanks Chamal, That barnstar is totally unexpected. I think the work is still half-completed. There are a plenty of work to be done. I consider this barnstar is an encouragement to go ahead with remainder of the work.

Good to see you back in editing. This shouldn't be a distraction for studies. See you in editing. Later!--Chanaka L (talk) 03:39, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

DYK LONG comment.. :)

My bad. It is just that it was my first DYK and I wanted to make sure that I covered all the bases (everything is in order) so yeah. Hope someone would be able to sift through it. The important thing is, the actual article is updated according to the concerns addressed so that should be cool. Cheers.Calaka (talk) 10:42, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Operation Unceasing Waves III

Hello Chamal N, I came across an edit by User:Ellaalan (talk) called Operation Unceasing Waves III which is the LTTE codename for the Second Battle of Elephant Pass. I looked at Operation Unceasing Waves III and it seemed biased towards the LTTE, plus it has no sources and it is not needed because Second Battle of Elephant Pass article is the proper article. Can you please check this page out. Thanks, Blackknight12 (talk) 09:12, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

The articles should be merged in a case like this. Unfortunately I won't be able to edit again until next week so I can't look into it until then.(strike that - I'll be free during the weekend so I probably will be able to check it out.) If you can, please try to contact Ellaalan and see what his idea on it is. If it's not resolved I'll take a look at it when I get back. It might be a good idea to take this to WT:SLR if a better discussion is necessary. Chamal talk 14:57, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
Just did a small check, and according to Tamilnet, the second battle of EP is part of Unceasing Waves III. Therefore the second battle of EP should have a separate article of its own (since it's a major battle of the war) and Unceasing Waves III will need a separate article to cover the overall operation. We just need to clean it up so that it qualifies WP:NPOV and WP:V. Chamal talk 15:04, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Re: Status Template

Yeah, it takes a while to kick in, from what I've been able to tell; I don't have a clue why, unfortunately. I've stopped using mine not because it doesn't work (it does for me), but simply because I keep forgetting to click the links until I go to log off, which somewhat defeats the purpose. Marking myself as "offline" all the time also reduces the frequency of the Orange Bar of Doom somewhat. ;-) Hersfold (t/a/c) 23:38, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

I pop in every now and then - the project usually stalls around this time of the year, so I wouldn't be too concerned. It'll pick back up again come fall. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:28, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Editorial: How to prepare an A-Class Review

Perhaps the most important—and, indeed, most respected—aspect of the Military History project is our rigorous A-Class Review (ACR) system, which puts articles through the most robust review outside of WP:FAC. Although reviewing might seem daunting to newcomers, this article will give you an outline of three popular reviewing methods so you can actually start contributing yourself.

  1. General nit-pick - this is one of the easiest - and one of the most common - reviewing styles seen throughout Wikipedia. It is a similar approach to that you would see in proofreading and classroom marking. Basically, it is a general overview of the article, not getting too specific on aspects of the prose. The most common statements include This article could benefit from a light copyedit before going to FAC or You might want to check the endash and emdash placement in the article. It's a style that is incredibly easy to manage, and one that requires little-to-no experience in previous reviewing.
  2. Specialization - it often is the case that those who have been reviewing articles for a long time will move away from the general review towards more specific areas of articles. As an example, Tony usually stays within the realm of prose and copyediting while reviewing Featured Article Candidates, Tom used to focus almost entirely on external links and disambiguations, while others specialize their focus exclusively on copyediting, reference formatting, dashes, punctuation and flow, image licensing, and a host of other areas. This is a review method that is not nearly as time-consuming as other methods, as it allows you to quickly scan an article, spot the things that you work on, and how they need to be fixed.
  3. Sectional - My preferred style of reviewing, this is one of the most informative styles. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most time-consuming and exhaustive styles. Essentially, it involves going through the entire article, section by section, and pointing out every major (and often many of the minor) flaws present within each section. Everything from prose to reference formatting to content. It is a reviewing style that is exhausting, and often takes two or three goes through the article to get everything (sometimes even more), but it gives the article's main contributors two benefits. First, everything is well organized, mostly under section headers like this one, and it often makes finding individual sentences or refs much easier, as they are within that section. Secondly, it points out a lot of the problems from a lot of the areas.

Best of luck, and happy Reviewing! Cam (Chat)

Thank you for making WP:NODRAMA a success!

Thank you again for your support of the Great Wikipedia Dramaout. Preliminary statistics indicate that 129 new articles were created, 203 other articles were improved, and 183 images were uploaded. Additionally, 41 articles were nominated for DYK, of which at least 2 have already been promoted. There are currently also 8 articles up for GA status and 3 up for FA/FL status. Though the campaign is technically over, please continue to update the log page at WP:NODRAMA/L with any articles which you worked during the campaign, and also to note any that receive commendation, such as DYK, GA or FA status. You may find the following links helpful in nominating your work:

Offline references and DYK

Hi there. First of all, thanks for passing my DYK suggestion and the compliment. Funny thing is, you wrote that the offline reference was accepted under AGF while I haven't used an offline reference. When I was working on that article, the book I cited was previewable at Google Books. But when I noticed your comment and I wanted to add the URL, I was surprised to find it gone from Google Books. I guess I've been lucky finding it before they took it down   Regards SoWhy 12:26, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

That's weird.. I was referring to ref 2. Of course, ref 3 covers the same thing so it's verified and not really an AGF pass I guess. I just mentioned the offline ref just because it was there :P ≈ Chamal talk 12:34, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Vandalism

Hello Chamal N how have you been? Hey could you check out this users edits, he has been adding and removing information which seems to be with a racial intent on the articles related to the northern regions of Sri Lanka such as Northern Province, Sri Lanka ‎, Mannar District and others. I have told him to stop vandalising the page but he continues, and has used unreliable sources like this [1], he also seems to be a member of WikiProject Sri Lanka. I have also told him to explain his edits on the talk page before he edits the article, and it is turning into a edit war. Could you please tell this person to stop his vandalism and follow the proper wikipedia protocaol. Thanks Blackknight12 (talk) 06:43, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

I'm trying to get out of the arguments and get down to some article building. I suggest you attempt to discuss with the user, and if that doesn't work you can take it to Wikipedia:Neutral point of view/Noticeboard. Alternatively you can report the matter at WT:SLR of course, and get the opinions of the people who are active in it. If it gets out of hand you can contact one of the admins listed at SLR. I'm not going to directly take part in this at least for now, mainly because of lack of time. ≈ Chamal talk 13:04, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Eela Tamilakam

Hi could you please see this article created by BlueLankan, Eela Tamilakam, which claims to be a historical province of Sri Lanka. He claims that this "province" was owned by Tamils and Tamil speaking people then turned into a kingdom in the north east of the country. This also happens to be in the time of the Anuradhapura Kingdom and he also talks about Tamils brought over from south India in the 18th century. He doesn't seem to use reliable sources because his sites are biased towards Tamils. Could you please see this article because it does not seem right or factual. Thanks Blackknight12 (talk) 01:39, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

It's still under construction, so still a bit early to draw any conclusions. I have never heard of this thing before and seems pretty much WP:OR though. Have you discussed with the user who made it? That should be the first step in any kind of dispute here. ≈ Chamal talk 07:35, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Hey, I had never heard of it as well that is why I want to ask you. I haven't had a discussion yet because I didn't know anything about it, but I will wait until he adds some more info.--Blackknight12 (talk) 08:07, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
I'm looking through the article now. I have found no reliable sources at all for this "Eela Tamilakam". I'll see a bit more and if I can't find anything I'll take it to WP:AFD. ≈ Chamal talk 08:10, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the help.--Blackknight12 (talk) 08:36, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
The new name Nakatheepam or Mannipalavam is a name mentioned in the Tamil Buddhist chronicle Manimekalai, it could have a article strictly based on that and it should mention that Manimekalai is fiction not history.Taprobanus (talk) 05:43, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
I'm not familiar with that, but if the context of the current article is completely about something else (as I have mentioned at the AFD discussion, it appears to be a mix of Jaffna Kingdom, Eelam and Nainathivu). I will immediately withdraw the nomination if the article can be corrected as you say. Thanks for your concern in this matter btw. ≈ Chamal talk 07:14, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
Ah, I see where he is trying to go. He is trying to make a case for old divisiosn of Sri Lanka such as Ruhuna, Raja rata & Malaya rata. Naga Dvipa (Nagadeepa) was the name of Jaffna Peninsula , so you could make a case for it as is but not as solely as a place of Tamils. That could b an spect of the article but not the entire article. We could have a dissam page on Nagadeepa. One leading to the current island of Nainatheevu and the other leading to Nagadeepa the old division of Sri Lanka where sub kings called Deeparaja's held sway. The curent article has to hacked awy completly. Taprobanus (talk) 12:06, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
I see. Yes, I agree completely with you if this is the case. I will see what I can find on this, and try to help with the article. ≈ Chamal talk 15:03, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

I've taken a look at the contributions of this IP, and most of the his edits, such as the ones made to Hotel du Vin, Red Funnel and NHS Blood and Transplant are clearly promotional in tone. Some edits like Gerard Basset appear to be neutral at first glance, but even there he has added the same sort of material in between. There are a few normal edits too where he has changed a few words here and there, but overall I'd say the block is justified. ≈ Chamal talk 10:10, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi. I just installed this the status(online/offline) template I found in your user page into my User:Bejinhan page. How do I change the status to online? BejinhanTalk 10:42, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi Bejinhan. It's supposed to automatically update the status when you click on those links at the bottom (saying on, busy etc). However, I think this doesn't work as soon as you add it for some reason. Even if it doesn't, clicking one of the links will take you to your /Status subpage, where you can manually update it. The way you have added it is wrong; it's not supposed to be transcluded in the subpage. See User:Hersfold/StatusTemplate for instructions on using it, and you can contact Hersfold (the creator of the template) if you want help. ≈ Chamal talk 11:02, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
How do I manually update my status? I noticed that you are in Wikipedia's Highly Active User list. I tried to add myself into the list but it wouldn't work. When I previewed the post, it was alright but when I saved it, the table went into a mess. I had to revert my changes. How do I add myself into the list? BejinhanTalk 11:54, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
It was probably because your status page (User:Bejinhan/Status) was not properly made. To work with the HAU table, your status page should contain one of these following lines:
  • offline
  • online
It just shows what is on your status page (and it's coded to add that coloured circle based on what's there). Since your status page now reads "Status template", that's what it would display right now. ≈ Chamal talk 12:10, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your help. I've managed to put in my status and profile in highly active users. Once again, thank you! BejinhanTalk 12:36, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

You're welcome. Hope to see you around then. ≈ Chamal talk 12:39, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
