Personality and interests
editMy primary interests are religion, mythology and folkloristics.
I'm interested in varying forms of literature(mostly epics, George MacDonald, Umberto Eco, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky; plus some mythopoeic books, mostly Neil Gaiman), philosophy(Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Tillich; mainly existentialism, and axiology). I'm also interested in J. R. R. Tolkien for his philological studies, which is what I consider his best and most important work.
I love most or everything about Japan(Yoko Ono *shivers* being an exception), so one can basically call me a Japanophile, but I'm very much interested in Asia and Asian culture in general. While some people mistake my interest for Japan as an obsession, I don't plan on studying too many aspects of Japan itself(I'm not too crazy about Japanese literature, and ain't going to study the language much beyond learning it). I'm also interested in the PIEs and Indo-European studies, in ancient history and archaeological findings, as well as language and historical linguistics. I'm intrigued by the current advances in Indo-European and Afro-Asiatic studies, together with the Dravidian languages, particularly Tamil, and the possibility of Elamo-Dravidian. I'm studying as vigilantly as I can, but my research and study materials are somewhat limited.
I'm currently writing a novel and several essays, but because of a lack of research material and/or inspiration, many of those are currently on hold.
Faith/Spiritual beliefs
editI'm not really sure what I believe, and I'm not really sure if I care to carry a designation for myself, mostly because I don't feel like it and don't have the need to. There are times when I'm nontheistic, times when I'm agnostic, and times when I am omnitheistic. Though one thing is certain that I do not worship any entities, however I don't have a moral(or any other) objection in offering a prayer to a divinity or at a shrine. Even though I formally called myself Christian, it really wasn't more than a designation, and I didn't really feel or perceive anything else differently. Although, even though I do at times, I really won't consider myself to be an atheist, because it would imply that I believe that I have absolute empirical perception of the cosmos(and that I assuredly deny any form of higher consience and/or existence), something which I don't. Though I am an atheist in the sense that I don't worship any divine beings, which is the more general definition of atheism.
However, one thing I do know is that I'm a religious pluralist, as I respect and feel that there is some truth in every religion. This is further strengthened by my status as a mythologist(especially as a comparative mythologist).
Mythology
editOne of my greatest interests is mythology. A myth is a sacred story concerning the origins of the world or how the world and the creatures in it came to have their present form, and refers to a collection of stories about a people, usually concerning their origin, history, deities, ancestors, and heroes behind the belief structure and faith. The stories discussed express the viewpoints and beliefs of the country, time period, culture, and/or religion which gave birth to them. Mythology is used to refer to stories that, whether or not believers accept them as strictly factual, are believed to reveal fundamental truths and insights about human nature, often through the use of archetypes. Use of the term by scholars does not imply that the narrative is either true or false.

- "As soon as we lose the moral basis, we cease to be religious. There is no such thing as religion over-riding morality. Man, for instance, cannot be untruthful, cruel or incontinent and claim to have God on his side".
- "The sayings of Muhammad are a treasure of wisdom, not only for Muslims but for all of mankind".
- Later in his life when he was asked whether he was a Hindu, he replied: "Yes I am. I am also a Christian, a Muslim, a Buddhist and a Jew".

- Land of religions, cradle of human race, birthplace of human speech, grandmother of legend, great grandmother of tradition. The land that all men desire to see and having seen once even by a glimpse, would not give that glimpse for the shows of the rest of the globe combined.
- Martin Amis
- "Now I say that I am an agnostic. People think that's pusillanimous and covering your bets. But it's not based on any belief or yearning for an afterlife but on the fact that we actually know so little about the cosmos. It is a tribute to the complexity and, at our present stage of development, the unknowability of the universe."
- "And God Said: Let there be Satan, so people don't blame everything on me, and let there be lawyers, so people don't blame everything on Satan" — John Wing
- "Not to be absolutely certain is, I think, one of the essential things in rationality."

NOTE: Categorising a story as a myth does not necessarily imply that it is untrue. Religion and mythology differ, but have overlapping aspects. Many English speakers understand the terms "myth" and "mythology" to mean fictitious or imaginary. However, according to many dictionary definitions, these terms can also mean a traditional story or narrative that embodies the belief or beliefs of a group of people, and this Wikipedia category should be understood in this sense only. The use of these terms in this category does not imply that any story so categorized is historically true or false or that any belief so embodied is itself either true or false. |
