Frederick Brindrett

edit

Created by Hawkeye7 (talk). Self-nominated at 22:44, 8 September 2017 (UTC).

"he was about the oldest first class hockey player in the country" is no definite in my book. Vensatry (talk) 06:29, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
"said to have been" is definite. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:05, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
My bad, I missed that bit. But in that case, I wonder whether an attribution is needed. Vensatry (talk) 09:26, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
The reference to New Scientist is both here and in the article on the sentence in question. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 00:15, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
Here's a proposed minor edit to the hook, which doesn't indicate which Ministry of Defense (also added a missing comma to ALT0). Attribution shouldn't be an issue; plenty of hooks have outright quotations that are only attributed in the article.
ALT1: ... that Frederick Brundrett, the UK's Chief Scientific Adviser to the Ministry of Defence, was said to have been one of Britain's oldest first-class field hockey players? --Usernameunique (talk) 03:46, 14 September 2017 (UTC)
Vensatry, does this address your concerns? --Usernameunique (talk) 21:45, 15 September 2017 (UTC)
Not convinced with WP:OSE. Btw, the claim is only "cited" and NOT "attributed" in the article. I understand that we cannot go about attributing each and every claim to a source, but in this case the hook ("was said to have been one of the oldest") sounds a bit vague. Vensatry (talk) 10:16, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
Further, the article doesn't say anything about the time period (in reference to his being among the oldest players to play hockey) and the "level" at which he represented the sport. Vensatry (talk) 10:25, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
Vensatry, you're right that it sounds vague. Hawkeye7, is there a reason that "said to have been" has to be in the hook? The vagueness of the source is about whether he was the oldest or not, not whether he was one of the oldest or not. How about ALT2? That would also make the attribution issue moot.
ALT2: ... that Frederick Brundrett, the UK's Chief Scientific Adviser to the Ministry of Defence, was one of Britain's oldest first-class field hockey players?
Hawkeye7, regarding his age and level, is there any more information from the source (e.g., what is first-class field hockey) that can be added? --Usernameunique (talk) 14:45, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
ALT2 looks perfect, IMO. Vensatry (talk) 16:34, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
approving ALT2, sourced. Article is sourced as well. Hook is interesting and article is long enough. QPQ provided. Elisa.rolle (talk) 21:00, 17 September 2017‎ (UTC)
Just an FYI that I obtained the source, and the WP article incorporates everything relevant. From the source: "He has two other gifts. One is phenomenal stamina, which enables him to keep a grasp of a difficult committee meeting which may last all afternoon and evening, and will be able to draft a report on it without pausing for dinner—a more impressive stamina, even, than he showed in the days when he was about the oldest first-class hockey player in the country. And the other is that recognised, invaluable gambit in public life, another life to fall back on." --Usernameunique (talk) 21:23, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
