Zendaya ColemanZendaya — She only goes by her first name, like Cher. --Confession0791 talk 03:31, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

  • True, I wouldn't take information found on IMDb too literally when it comes to episode lists, or complete cast lists, etc, but when it comes to something as important as a star's name I would think that either the star themselves or one of their representatives would be aware of the importance of IMDb within the industry and would have been to the page by now to have seen how she was credited there, and if there was a problem, corrected it. Not that I have a problem with her Wikipedia page being changed (it could always be changed back again if she did start to use her last name), but IMDb is probably the #1 source (along with Wikipedia) people turn to for information, so it would probably be easier for the average reader if the name (whatever she decides) were the same on both sites.Crakkerjakk (talk) 11:23, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Zendaya - Error - Singing career

Dear Wiki Admins,

I represent LOL Social Media Group and manage Miss Coleman's official website, Zendaya.Com. We work directly with Miss Coleman, her family, her manager, her publicist, and her agent.

Her Wikipedia page states: Zendaya is signed to Hollywood Records which is the same music label as many other disney stars such as Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez.

Zendaya is NOT signed to Hollywood Records! The single "Swag It Out" was released independently. This can be verified here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/swag-it-out/id439662455?i=439662504&ign-mpt=uo%3D4

Please make this correction at your earliest convenience.

Thank you very much!

Not done: That page doesn't say she is from Zimbabwe, it says she was born in Oakland, California, which is what the article says. Zendaya's Full name is Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman . Scorce www.imdb.com/name/nm3918035/bio. --Bella##Fan##262 (talk) 16:28, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

IMDb is not a useable reference. See WP:IMDB and WP:RS/IMDB for why. See also WP:BLPPRIVACY for other rules about including middle names in articles. Geraldo Perez (talk) 19:17, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Well what I find a reliable scorce. Because we could put it in the infobox in the Birth name part. There's no rule that says we can't do that. After all many other stars have it done like that.

(like Bella Thorne---Annabella Avery Thorne

Taylor Swift---Taylor Alison Swift

Lena Meyer-Landrut---Lena Johanna Threase Meyer-Landrut

etc)

so there is no rule that says we can't put it in the info box if someone finds a reliable scorce. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BellaFan262 (talkcontribs) 14:19, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

That is exactly what WP:BLPPRIVACY says is required, a reliable source. Without one don't put in birthdates or middle names. So far don't have one for Zendaya's middle name. If you can find one, great. Geraldo Perez (talk) 15:28, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

Genre in infobox

Genres should be referenced from reliable sources. I added allmusic's evaluation ("Zendaya - Credits". allmusic by Rovi. 2012. Retrieved December 23, 2012.) that stated genres as Pop/Rock and Children's. Allmusic is a recognized authority on genre classification so needs a pretty good reference to say they are wrong. This is based on what she has done so far. Pop rock is a pretty high level genre and encompass a lot of styles that don't need to be mentioned in this level of article.

Zendaya mentioned plans for a future album in this video from March 2011 and mentioned the types of music she is planning on doing. These are still only stated plans and don't count as an evaluation of what she has actually done. Geraldo Perez (talk) 22:34, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

I removed this allmusic reference to entry for "Something to Dance For" as the listed song genre is Pop/Rock with style Pop. Genre listed is same as for allmusic artist genre so was redundant. Style "pop" is basically a sub-genre of Pop/Rock for this song and need not be listed here as the genre includes it. Also genre "Children's" is listed in the main artist listing so should not be removed without a good reason as it does have a good reference. Geraldo Perez (talk) 04:48, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned references in Zendaya

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Zendaya's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "variety":

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 00:49, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Her father's ethnicity/race is not explicit in the article - his name implies one, but that is all. What is referenced in ref 19 is that she received an NAACP award so she is considered by them to meet their requirements of being "a person of color". See WP:BLPCAT and WP:EGRS and consider what category can be supported by the reliable sources we have so far. It is not referenced how she self-identifies and that may not be obvious without some statement by her. --Geraldo Perez (talk) 14:53, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Edit The meaning of Zendaya's name request on 9 August 2012

Please correct the meaning of Zendaya's name. It's either it means "to give thanks" in yet another language but Shona. I am Shona myself from Zimbabwe. The Shona name meaning "to give thanks" is TENDAYI. Its rarely spelt with a "Y" that is normally TENDAI.We also have versions of the name TENDAI, such as TATENDA, (my daughter's name), TINOTENDA, NOKUTENDA and a couple more. I am guessing who ever named her, if they were looking for a Shona name with that meaning it should have been "TENDAYI", unless otherwise "Zendaya" has a similar meaning in yet another language. Prominent figures from Zimbabwe with this name are namely Tendai Biti Zimbabwe's Minister of Finance, Tendai Mtawarira Zimbabwean born, South African rugby union player etc Please refer to the link provided for meanings of Shona names zimnames. It is vey common practice for most Shona names to end with ...ishe, which means Lord, in which case the version Tinotendaishe, simply means - "give thanks to the Lord".Tracey S (talk) 14:31, 9 August 2012 (UTC) Tracey S (talk) 14:25, 9 August 2012 (UTC) Tracey S (talk) 14:25, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

Comment: You are undoubtably correct based on your personal knowledge. The problem is that she herself and her parents think that her name means "to give thanks" and that is reflected in the references we are using. See [1]. Unfortunately we must go by what reliable sources can justify. The name site you gives does not give a definition of Zendaya although it does support other names with that meaning. I'm not sure how to handle this to reflect that her parents and her believe her name means "to give thanks". Is it possible that Zendaya is different phonetic representation of Tendayi as transcribed from a Shona word? They sound really similar. We have that problem with going from Arabic and Russian names with various English equivalent spellings. Could this be what is happening here? Geraldo Perez (talk) 16:14, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

We have references to support current article content and according to WP:V that is what we must go by. No response to the question I asked above and no additional references provided. Even though the spelling may be technically incorrect it is a plausible English phonetic spelling of a foreign word. Geraldo Perez (talk) 18:57, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

There is really only one source that says Zendaya's name means "to give thanks" in Shona and that is Zendaya herself. I'm assuming that Disney is not likely an expert in the Shona language and probably got this information from Zendaya or her family. It's easy enough to find sources that say "Tenda" means "to give thanks" in Shona but I cannot find a source unrelated to Ms. Coleman that says "Zendaya" means "to give thanks". I think unless we can verify it with an unrelated source then it should be removed. For An Angel (talk) 20:45, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
Or we can rephrase things to say the Zendaya has stated that her name means "to give thanks" in Shona putting any error in interpretation on her. Geraldo Perez (talk) 21:07, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
Also adding that according to most sources, "to give thanks" is "Tenda"? Simply stating that Zendaya has said that doesn't imply that she not completely accurate. I actually believe that what you said earlier is probably true. Zendaya may be to Tenda or Tendai what Bella is to Isabelle; just another variation of the same name. For An Angel (talk) 17:13, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
I'm OK with the article as it is, this is a fairly minor issue and somewhat trivial. It could just be removed since we have conflicting sources. I would support any changes you would wish to make based on the above discussion though. Geraldo Perez (talk) 17:49, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
One of you mentioned "The name site you gives does not give a definition of Zendaya ........". That's because "Zendaya" is not a Shona name. Anyway I notice you have made a correction, thanks.Tracey S (talk) 11:21, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

I am also a Shona speaker and as such think that to say this is trivial is insulting. Either you are interested in accuracy or not. Zendaya cannot be a variation on the name Tendai - never in a million years. No one who speaks Shona would replace a 'T' with a 'Z'. Her name is fictional, based on no language - maybe inspired by the Shona name Tendai but meaningless. Also to end the phrase give thanks with 'ya' is totally meaningless in the shona language. Please can you reflect that truth - I heard this nonsense being quoted on radio - which is why it makes me mad. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 197.221.242.190 (talkcontribs) 14:48, 16 December 2013‎ (UTC)

The article as it currently stands just says that is what Zendaya thinks her name means. That is a true statement and puts any error on Zendaya and her parents. It would be nice to find some of the above discussion on something we could use as a reliable source so we could add to the article that Zendaya is mistaken. Unfortunately, believable as the above info is, it is not sufficient to use to change the article further. As for being trivial, that is in the context of the article on Zendaya and her accomplishments. If this were an article on the Shona language, it would, of course, not be trivial in that context. I'm not sure these categories are particularly relevant - the article doesn't discuss Zendaya's African or European descent, although we might assume she has such descent as the article mentions her father is Black and her mother is white. If reliable sources provide more detail about the relevance of her ethnic background, we could include that in the article and then it might make sense to include those categories.VoluntarySlave (talk) 18:33, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

@Wilson30337: That's because in meantime Tenebrae reverted my edit saying "Films not added to filmography boxes until production (filming) is underway" – well, okay then. I don't know if these can be mentioned in prose. If so, be bold, otherwise we'll just have to wait, I guess. nyuszika7h (talk) 09:39, 19 June 2016 (UTC)
@Nyuszika7H: I dunno how Tenebrae feels about it, but I think casting news like that can be mentioned in the prose as long as it's sourced to a WP:RS. But I rather agree with Tenebrae that "pre-production" projects should pretty much not be listed in the Filmography tables. --IJBall (contribstalk) 18:33, 19 June 2016 (UTC)
Exactly. Casting or "in negotiations for the role of"-type news from reputable sources like Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline.com, TheWrap.com, etc. are frequently used in prose. That's pretty normal, actually. Thank you guys for discussing it.--Tenebrae (talk) 16:15, 20 June 2016 (UTC)

Well, then it's good that filming has officially begun on Spider-Man: Homecoming, AND she's STILL on the cast list. Wilson30337 (talk) 18:12, 20 June 2016 (UTC)

Super Awesome Katy

Do we really need to include Super Awesome Katy in the filmography table? I'd mention it in the prose at most, but it may be sufficient to just mention it in K.C. Undercover. nyuszika7h (talk) 13:04, 11 June 2016 (UTC)

This has bugged me for a while. I'd suggest removing it. It was a planned project that really never happened so there is no official credit which is what should be in the table. I guess it could be considered a working title for K.C. Undercover and it got subsumed into that project. Geraldo Perez (talk) 13:44, 11 June 2016 (UTC)

This article contains the following "Zendaya promptly took to Instagram to address the racist reference of the remark and point out that many successful people have 'locs,'". While nobody actually can know what Guiliana Rancic actually thinks, describing her comment as "racist" seems inaccurate for a couple of reasons. As the second part of the sentence points out, "many successful people have 'locs'", including many white people. The comment may be stereo-typing Zendaya as a pot-head because of her hair style, but unless you believe that only black people smoke pot (in which case, you're the racist), the comment falls far short of the editorialized "racist reference". It is my understanding that Wikipedia aims to avoid editorializing.

My suggestion is to change "Zendaya promptly took to Instagram to address the racist reference of the remark" to "Zendaya promptly took to Instagram to address the remark". Matthewottoweber (talk) 14:54, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

New Section (?? Thought there was supposed to be a button to create a new section). Anyway I want to address the following section of the page, right after citation 42:

"...in December 2017, Zendaya co-starred in the musical film The Greatest Showman, alongside Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron, as an trapeze artist named Anne Wheeler, who falls in love with Efron's character, Phillip Carlyle, durring a time Interracial romance was taboo. Her chemistry with Efron throught the film was well received by Owen Gleiberman from Variety "Efron and Zendaya have a terrific chemistry — they never stop seeking each other out." [43] The Greatest Showman grossed $18.6 million over its first six days, finishing 4th at the box office.[44]"

First, it should be "a trapeze artist", not "an trapeze artist". Then the sentence about chemisty needs to be rewritten; it's hard to know just what's being said. "Throught" is supposed to be "throughout", but probably we don't need that word. I'd suggest simply "Owen Gleiberman stated in Variety: "Effron and Zendaya... etc." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Neurodog (talkcontribs) 02:48, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

Also, "during" should have only one r, and "a time when Interracial romance"-- should be " a time when interracial..." No reason for capital letters, and it works better with the word "when" in there. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Neurodog (talkcontribs) 02:52, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

Really?

I fail to understand how she qualifies as a 'single name' star. Generally a singer has to have a couple of platinum albums - her "best" (if you can call a kiddie album that) peaked at #51. While all the bloated egos in Hollywood want to be so famous as to be known by their single name (or stage name), she isn't that. In fact she doesn't make Ranker's list of the 96 'top' single name stars. Simply because her fans as well as her Public Relations machine try to pretend that she's got that status, she doesn't qualify, imho. This article ought not to be titled that. (Full disclosure: I've never heard of her (although I must have seen her in Spider-man)).40.142.185.108 (talk) 03:45, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Point taken, but it’s not up to Wikipedia to decide what names people have to use. All Adult performers use fake names, many models do, as well as actors and other entertainers - and that’s what we go by. At least she’s using her real name and it’s much easier to say than saying: Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman. I think it's safe to say that by NOT using her full real name she's doing the World a favor.  :)Glenn Francis (talk) 05:19, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Known Mononymously as

In the lead sentence after her name, it says known mononymously as, which should have not been there in the first place. SNUGGUMS had done this practice multiple times with single named people such as Madonna and Kesha Rose Sebert. Of course she was never credited by her full name in both of her Disney shows to date. I repeat the phrase should have not been there in the first place.

While it is accurate, I'm removing that because it's needlessly repetitive to state someone's first name more than once in opening sentence. The article title also already makes it obvious that she's known by just her first name. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 18:36, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Music Career in other ventures

I think that the details of her music career should be moved to her ‘Other Ventures’ page. She has chosen to turn her focus towards acting, so keeping her music career where it is seems a little pointless. That would also make room to add more details of her acting in that area instead, which is what she is most well known for. Ajack15 (talk) 01:10, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

Why isn't there any information on her fashion and ambassador/modeling work?

Switching main photo to Google search panel profile photo? (idea if possible)

Please consider (just consider) switching main photo to Google search panel profile photo if available & possible by license. It has dark but uniform background and imho is really much better photo as profile one. Google has it locked internationally (probably on all language editions) as main photo shown in her search panel (quite interesting if this is their idea or it was submitted by her representative). Just an idea because this other photo from the same event that you discussed earlier about is possible best but background is bad actually and it is too dark. Current one on the other hand is not her best to be used here in my opinion. With all her styles it is hard to choose best but I think Google has the best one to represent. Jgwikid (talk) 16:47, 20 December 2020 (UTC)

Wikipedia requires an unrestricted free use license that permits derivatives for images of living people. Most professional photographers don't permit that so unlikely that image will have an acceptable license. Geraldo Perez (talk) 16:55, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
Yes, I understand this perfectly. However maybe it is just the question whether someone wants to try to localize the photographer and contact him. There are so many photographers and so many photos these days that possibly being credited on Wikipedia, what is shown for a lot of people, would be enough for him (just my thoughts). I know this is not quite standard procedure so thanks for your answer. Jgwikid (talk) 17:39, 20 December 2020 (UTC)

Which photo should be used?

The consensus is to use the 2019 photo (File:Zendaya 2019 by Glenn Francis.jpg) or 2019a (File:Zendaya - 2019 by Glenn Francis.jpg) photo. There is no prejudice against further discussion about which 2019 photo to use.

Should the 2018 photo be used or should the 2019 photo be used? The 2019 photo shouldn't be used just because it's more recent, there has to be a legitimate reason to use it or any other 2019 photo of Zendaya. I don't care either way, as long as a proper discussion is held, per policies, for an official consensus to form. Pinging involved editors: Toglenn, Mazewaxie, Krimuk2.0, Davey2010. • 2019 - As I just posted here, the 2018 photo is a screenshot of a YouTube video and is of poor quality, while the 2019 one is an actual photography and it looks way better. I don't think there should even be a debate when an image is clearly better than another. --Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 15:43, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
  • Either is fine, IMO. The 2019 image is probably slightly better, as she's looking directly at the camera. Neither is an optimal "headshot" though IMO. Note: I'm not trying to figure out if the 2019 image is a WP:COPYVIO or not – obviously it is, that changes things. --IJBall (contribstalk) 15:45, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
  • 2018 - IMHO the 2019 image looks more like a porno sort of image then it does a dressy sort of one, Ofcourse she's entitled to dress how she likes but imho the way it was taken it just looks tacky and awful whereas in the 2018 she looks more normal, This isn't a NOTCENSORED/"Think of the children!!!" !vote it's more appropriateness I guess. –Dave | Davey2010Talk 15:48, 19 August 2019 (UTC)

  • 2019 (cropped to face would be ideal) - Better high-quality image that's not a screenshot. Also, "porno"? It's 2019 and we shouldn't be judging young women over what they chose to wear. Krimuk2.0 (talk) 16:00, 19 August 2019 (UTC)

(edit conflict) @Davey2010: That's spot on. See IJBall's comments at Talk:Cameron Boyce#Semi-protected edit request on 12 July 2019, specifically: The only exception to that is former child actors – for them, if you can replace an image of the subject as a child with an image of the subject as a teen or adult, then that would justify using the "most recent" image even if the most recent image is "lower quality". This isn't the case here, as the 2018 photo is still Zendaya as an adult. Amaury16:03, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
Are either image free? Is there a free image to be found? I mean, I went to Creative Commons and found a bunch of free pictures for her. Between free and non-free, we are required to use free. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 16:04, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
  • 2018 Is a better image, has a better background, less messy than the 2019 image and I think it better represents how she looks. The 2018 image has more contrast with her hair, the 2019 image her hair sort of blends into the background. Both images are free-use on commons so there is no issue with either for use in the article. Toglenn (Glenn Francis of www.PacificProDigital.com) is a pro photographer who licenses his copyrighted images to Wikipedia for free-use so his work is well appreciated. I just think his latest image is inferior to the older one for use here. Might add the 2019 image in a later section but I don't think it is needed. Geraldo Perez (talk) 18:11, 19 August 2019 (UTC)

Regarding the 2019 photo of Zendaya:

Zendaya Full Length 2019

One of the things a photographer who specializes in photos of people tries to capture is the person’s personality or character.

The choice a woman makes when it comes to what to wear to the Red Carpet premiere of your movie is an extremely important and a very personal choice. The outfit one chooses is a good indicator of something about a person’s personality. The outfit Zendaya chose to wear helps identify the person she is beyond just what she looks like. The 2019 photo achieves that.

In addition to providing an image of what Zendaya looks like today, the 2019 photo is technically far superior to a low quality video screen grab that was copied from YouTube. My 2019 photo is hi-resolution (2.3MB) with a printable dpi of 300 whereas the low-res screen grab is not. Wikipedia is a very high-quality publication, and so should be the photos. The composition of this photo is also what Wikipedia prefers – a recent and pleasant Portrait style close-up of the person looking into the camera (not away from the camera). Also, this 2019 photo is the main photo on 60 Foreign language Wikipedia’s.

For those who are interested, here is Zendaya’s full outfit.

Thanks for everyone’s input and consideration. Glenn Francis (talk) 00:52, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

For an infobox image the source size doesn't matter much with the downscaling needed to fit in the infobox. In an absolute sense it is a better image when it is viewed full size but that benefit is mostly lost as a thumbnail image. The 2019 image is sharper but not significantly more than the 2018 image, again in the size viewed here. My objection is mostly about the background. Her face is fine but her hair is hard to make out. The full-size image is better in that respect. A crop of that image showing upper body looks the best to me over either of the other two images. Geraldo Perez (talk) 01:24, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

So I went through my photos and found one that is exactly what everyone requested: a clean background (a big preference of mine) and a distinct separation of hair from the background - also a preference of mine. Posted. Thanks to all for the excellent suggestions! Glenn Francis (talk) 08:15, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

I must thank you for your valuable contributions to Wikipedia, Toglenn. The new picture is smashing! :) Krimuk2.0 (talk) 09:01, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

Which photo to use?

I looked at a few different photos of Zendaya. I suspect there is something wrong with the 2019a photo (see above) used in the article. It looks to me that her skin has been artificially lightened to make her look racially white rather than brown. All other photos, even the 2019 photo above which is lighter than most, give her darker skin. If my suspicion is correct, the 2019a photo is unethical and should be replaced. Zaslav (talk) 01:09, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

Her skin tone and hair color depends on the lighting at the time of the photo and whatever makeup she is using. Also if she has a tan or not. Same as for any person photographed under artificial light. I assume the photographer tried to capture her as accurately as he could. Racially she is mixed and skin tone will be between her mother's and father's, not necessarily exactly between the two. The photo is a good one, no reason to change it. Geraldo Perez (talk) 01:44, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
You are dismissing the possibility of artificial lightening, which is a common practice. On what basis do you do that? If the photo has been tampered with, it is not a good photo—I'm sure you would agree with that. The question is whether or not and I don't see an answer. It may not be, of course.
Her skin color does not even have to be between her mother's and father's although that is probable. I am wondering about the facts, not inferences. Zaslav (talk) 23:11, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
I am asserting it is artificial lighting based on the event and likely time of day. It wasn't taken outside during the day. There is no indication the photographer did anything other then accurately capture an image as best he could in the lighting conditions available at the time. The photographer was the uploader and has an account on Wikipedia. Maybe contact him to express your concerns that he intentionally did an incorrect color correction on the photo he took and uploaded. Geraldo Perez (talk) 23:53, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

Filmography

Hi. Before anymore edits are made to the filmography section, can we discuss exactly what should be written here first? I feel like starting a back and forth becomes disruptive. No films that don't have a confirmed release year/are not currently in principal photography should be placed in her filmography table. A White Lie, Finest Kind, the Ronnie Spector biopic: all of these have been announced, but there are no current updates on them. As for the music videos, just for consistency, they should be placed at the bottom. That's how it is on other actor's pages (Thandiwe Newton and Issa Rae for example). She hasn't been making music for years, and hasn't been in a music video since 2017. Making her music videography the focal point of the section is nonsensical. Ajack15 (talk) 17:36, 24 November 2021 (CT)
