Including the August 24, 2023 tornado
editRecently, the addition of the EF2 tornado was challenged by another user. So, here is this discussion's question: Should we include a sentence about the tornado, which struck Webberville on August 24, 2023 (Tornadoes of 2023#August 24 (Michigan and Canada))? The Weather Event Writer (Talk Page) 21:00, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- Support inclusion – There is many secondary reliable sources, which mention the tornado. Here is 3 of those sources: [1][2][3]. The Weather Event Writer (Talk Page) 21:00, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose – per WP:RECENT and WP:UNDUE. Highly unnecessary to include each tornado that occurs in the vicinity of a town in the history section. United States Man (talk) 21:28, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- @United States Man:, I should point out, one of the references mentioned, [4] said and I quote: "One person was killed, and several were injured along I-96 after a tornado hit Webberville". So, your oppose to addition says that a deadly, significant EF2 tornado, which media says hit the town, should not be added due to being to recent and undue weight? Really? The Weather Event Writer (Talk Page) 21:41, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- My reasoning is rooted in policy. Yours seems to be rooted in emotion. United States Man (talk) 21:46, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- This might be better for an RfC? In 3-years of editing, I haven't seen an opposition to mentioning a killer tornado in the town's Wikipedia article. If addition is not done, that somewhat set's a precedent that killer tornadoes do not need to be mentioned in the impacted town's Wikipedia article/town's history section. I'll let this play out a while though, given I alerted WP Michigan and WP Weather (the two WikiProjects related to this) about this discussion. - The tornado struck the interstate on the outskirts of town and will not cause significant/historical impact. Thus, no inclusion per WP:RECENT and WP:UNDUE. United States Man (talk) 21:54, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

- WP:RECENT cites that articles shouldn’t be focused on a disaster that struck it recently. I cannot find any objection to a short mention of an event. I also can’t find how WP:UNDUE plays into this. NorthStarMI (talk) 22:51, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- I Support the inclusion of the tornado as a 1-2 sentence inclusion under the history tab, though I would not support any inclusion that exceeds 2 sentences as I believe it would focus the history tab on the tornado.

- The survey has revealed the tornado didn't actually hit the town. It didn't even pass into the city limits. United States Man (talk) 03:45, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
- Did the tornado actually hit Webberville directly? If so, I support the tornado's inclusion, since I always would add tornadoes that strike towns if they (a) are EF2 or stronger and/or (b) kill people. If it did not hit the town, I oppose the inclusion. ChessEric 01:02, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
- @ChessEric: The tornado appears to have stayed south of Interstate 96, crossing Highway 52 and Wallace Rd, per the survey. By this, the tornado remained in a rural area and did not enter the city limits. Thus, it didn't hit nor significantly impact Webberville. United States Man (talk) 03:42, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
- I would like to see a source for this, since I can't find any information regarding the tornado's exact path. NorthStarMI (talk) 06:59, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
- If it stayed south of I-96, then I oppose including the EF2 tornado into this article. ChessEric 20:02, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
- I should point out that the 2022 Winterset EF4 tornado didn't actually hit any structures in Winterset, Iowa, however, a single sentence regarding the deadly tornado, which caused deaths near the town (same as this tornado did), is mentioned in the town's article. The Weather Event Writer (Talk Page) 20:16, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
- WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. United States Man (talk) 22:08, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
- That EF4 tornado hit several roads leading into Winterset and was VERY close to hitting the town directly. If this EF2 tornado had gone north of I-96 near Webberville, I would have supported the inclusion here, but it sounds like it didn't, so I have to say no. ChessEric 00:29, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
- I don't think enough information has been released to decide how close this tornado actually came to town limits, the PNS doesn't have a track map either, so I think this discussion should be put on hold until information to determine if the tornado did impact Webberville or related places comes out. Sadly though, this doesn't seem to be the case right now. I'm leaning toward include because I'm not able to find many sources that say it didn't impact the town. - The track on the DAT is showing that the tornado took a winding path that took it south of I-96 south of Webberville. ChessEric 16:49, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Also, the tornado had weakened by the time it passed near Webberville, so I wouldn't add it in the article. ChessEric 16:55, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

- Additional note: I read the PNS and it indicates that the tornado moved along and/or south of I-96 and did not go north of the freeway until it got into Livingston County, which means Webberville was completely missed. On a side note, who knew that tornadoes actually use interstates as a way to get around? XD ChessEric 00:38, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
