Origin of term
editIs anyone able to provide explanation of where the term "floating world" originated? e.g. was it a literary term or folk idiom? - 152.76.1.244 (talk) 06:47, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
I'm not very familiar with this specific term, but do know intermediate Japanese. "Floating world" seems to be a direct translation of the two characters: 浮 for "floating" and 世 for "world". However, the main definition for this word online is "fleeting life" or "this transient world", similar but more natural in English. Interestingly enough, the fourth entry in the definition is "(the world of the) red light districts". This final definition certainly matches the rest of the Wikipedia article and is hinted at with "fleeting" and "transient", suggesting to make the most of pleasure with your limited life. Since I'm not at all qualified to make this Japanese correction, I'll post it as a question on Stackexchange. MXMLLN (talk) 15:14, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
Detailed origin was posted in StackExchange, though no references were posted: https://japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/64546/what-does-ukiyo-%E6%B5%AE%E4%B8%96-mean/64550#64550 However, most references online do use the term "floating world" (See 1 & 2) MXMLLN (talk) 15:02, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
