  •   Reviewing this. The article is new created at April 1st and Earwig turns out no problem. I added duplication of the reference before the sentence that stating it was a hub of Korean independence movement just to be inline with DYKN requirements about citation. QPQ good, only need one. I think its good to go now Nyanardsan (talk) 05:39, 7 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Thank you for the review! For all reading, this is toobigtokale; I retired my main account but I'll still be around to see this DYK off. I'll look at this nom every few days until it gets posted, so feel free to request changes from me if it's in advance. Please feel free to edit the article and DYK in any ways you think of; assume I approve of everything. I'm planning to largely step away from the site for a while. 104.232.119.107 (talk) 14:23, 7 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

ShinhanchonSinhanch'on – I'm the page creator (toobigtokale aka Renamed user blah blah), and made a mistake when titling the article. This new proposed spelling abides by McCune–Reischauer romanization of Korean. I don't have a sense that there is a clear WP:COMMONNAME in English, so just defaulting to MR. 104.232.119.107 (talk) 00:29, 21 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Seefooddiet: Thanks for your expediency and for bringing my attention to the Romanization discourse. I've made a few minor changes to the article but at this point, I feel there is nothing left to address before promotion. Thank you and congratulations! Well-written

edit

Lead

edit
  • I would merge paragraphs 1 and 2 as well as 3 and 4 to avoid having one-sentence paragraphs in the lead.
  • However, these efforts were suppressed > remove However

Background

edit
  • doubled by 1891 to 840. > doubled to 840 by 1891.
  • , 2 km (1.2 mi) away from Kaech'ŏk-ri, > remove commas

History

edit
  • However, the community > The community
  • in the Russian style. However, they > in the Russian style, though they
  • And while not directly > remove "And"
  • A community organization... > merge sentence with previous paragraph
  • However, the group secretly funded > Secretly, the group funded
  • However, Russian authorities, under Japanese pressure, > Under Japanese pressure, Russian authorities
  • in Ussuriysk, a protest > remove comma
  • local Japanese consulate, local government buildings, and local consulates > the first "local" is the only one that's needed
  • late 1922, after the Japanese > remove comma
  • would attend the event > attended the event
  • However, militant Korean independence > Militant Korean independence

Other memorials

edit
  • These paragraphs could all be merged into one since they're relatively short
  • Korean Cultural Center, Ussuriysk > Ussuriysk Korean Cultural Center
  • restored in 2017, amidst > remove comma
  • At the northern end of the nearby Amur Street is a house with a unique street address "Seoul Street" > A house at the northern end of the nearby Amur Street has the unique street address "Seoul Street"
  • , that dates from the > , which dates from the

Notes

edit
  • Akulenko claims > Akulenko writes (IAW MOS:CLAIM)

Verifiable

edit
  • The first two Korean sources' titles, as well source 20, have not been translated into English.
  • Some of the authors' names have been transliterated; some have not. Since this is an article intended for English-language readers, I would lean towards having them all transliterated. Same with some of the website names, if possible.
  • 20 and 29 aren't marked as being in Korean.

Spot check

edit
  • 2: Verified
  • 28: Verified
  • 14: Verified
  • 25: Verified, but remove "| IIAS" from the title
  • 18: Verified

Illustrated

edit
  • All images are properly licensed and beneficial to the article.

Neutrality, broadness, and stability

edit
  • No issues

Discussion

edit
  • Thank you for the feedback! I implemented all but one of the suggested changes. Exception was transliterating author/website names. In MOS:KO, after a discussion we decided to not mandate transliteration for either. This was because of how begrudgingly complicated WP:KOREANNAME and WP:NCKO are and because many people have attempted ad-hoc romanizations that are somewhat harmful (impossible to determine original Hangul). Actual understanding of Korean romanization systems is really poor globally, including in both Koreas. While I know the guidelines and can romanize these names, I wanted to establish a precedent that it's ok to leave orig Hangul for now, per MOS:KO. I don't feel confident myself in what's best to do, but I figure it's better to have fewer asks than more in uncertainty. seefooddiet (talk) 07:06, 8 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

English translation of name

edit

@Seefooddiet Would it make sense to add an English translation of the name of this place to the article? I think it would best fit in footnote a in the lead and again in the first two sentences of the History section, where the name is explained. (If it's already there and I just didn't see it, trout me.)

Based on the hanja I believe the name translates as "New Korean Village", but if you could confirm this that'd be great. Toadspike [Talk] 20:13, 8 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

The English translation is in the very first footnote (a) seefooddiet (talk) 20:32, 8 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
aight, I'm dumb, no idea how I missed that. Toadspike [Talk] 20:43, 8 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
No worries 😅 it was nestled in a lot of dense info, honestly practically speaking many will miss it there anyway. Difficult part of working with three languages is dealing with three sets of names for things seefooddiet (talk) 20:54, 8 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
