Puolivallaton

edit

Should we try to translate the "puolivallaton" concept? --Vuo 22:56, 22 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sauli Niinistö's name

edit

Sauli Niinistö is the first President of Finland to have an accented letter in his name since Kyösti Kallio, the fourth president of Finland, preceding him by about seven decades, and the first President of Finland to have an accented letter in his surname since Kaarlo Juho Ståhlberg, the first president of Finland, preceding him by almost a century. Has this caused any problems with foreigners, particularly native English speakers, some of which seem incapable of typing accented letters? JIP | Talk 19:27, 2 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Tax haven

edit

Hi Victor Chmara, thanks for reading my addition. In my opinion the statement of the tax expert deserves place [1], since he criticises Finnish politics not to stop effectively the tax losses: Among other politicians Sauli Niinistö has received funds from the tax haven, he did not announced them as law demanded and he and his conservative party has not worked effectively to stop the tax losses. Sauli Niinistö is responsible as president and his concervative party as having the majority power in the government in regard to the state finance. For judgement the expert statement is in my opinion needed. Watti Renew (talk) 14:53, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

"Expert of state tax losses based on tax haven ]]s Mr Markku Hirvonen continues to state in 2013 that the resources in Finland are not sufficient to stop the tax losses." ref Harmaan talouden tutkija: Veroparatiisien tutkintaan ei panosteta Suomessa yle 24.3.2013

If you have something important to say about his political opinions and policies, please go on. But your additions are mostly newspaper trivia. There are similar stories and gossip about all important politicians. See What Wikipedia is not. – And, for haven's sake, it's tax haven, not "tax haven"! --Surfo (talk) 15:12, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Fixed tax haven. Thanks Surfo. I will continue later. Watti Renew (talk) 14:59, 11 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Broken grammar?

edit

From the article: "Niinistö address formally Putin (in German siezen)." What does that even mean? Any takers?

It means that he addressed Putin in the polite form, and not in the informal form. It's a concept unknown to the present English language but it come down to it that he addressed him with something equivalent to "thou" instead of "you". Is indeed not relevant at all. Gerard von Hebel (talk) 10:30, 10 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Actually, you got that backwards. Way back when "thou" was still used, "thou" was the informal word and "you" was the formal word. Nowadays "you" is used for both. JIP | Talk 17:48, 12 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Military service branch

edit

The infobox said Niinistö served in the Finnish navy (yet the army rank insignia was shown!) but this evidently isn't the case. The English-language version of the official website of the President specifically says that he holds the rank of "Captain in the Finnish Army Reserve". Meanwhile the Finnish original of the same page states his rank as "Kapteeni reservissä" (Captain in the reserve), whereas the Finnish naval rank equivalent to an army Captain is not Kapteeni but Kapteeniluutnantti, and had he served in the navy I'm sure they would have used the correct term Kapteeniluutnantti on that page. For both those reasons I concluded that the reference to navy was incorrect, and have changed the service branch in the infobox from navy to army; if anyone knows differently, please comment citing your source. NATO stance

edit

I think the article needs a link in regards to what it claims about his opinion about NATO membership (pro/contra); right now this is just an opinion listed on this wikipedia article though. Wikipedia should strive to add credit to claims made. Right now we can not really verify whether what is CLAIMED about him, is true in this regard. It would be better to remove the claim right now, until verification can be added (or perhaps move it into the talk page here for the time being, if no link can be found) 2A02:8388:1641:8380:F57D:59AE:A2AE:B491 (talk) 20:44, 17 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
