Sources for future use

Timeframes

So, when I first made the list of games part, it was basically off of the launch/current games. Now that there are future games out there that are confirmed to have Off TV Play, (The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker most notably) should we organize it different?

  • Should there be two lists, one "current", one "future"?
  • Should release date be a column or something?
  • A different aproach? Or not changing anything?

Thoughts? Sergecross73 msg me 13:53, 25 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

A really late reply, but I think it is fine the way it is. Release dates can be easily found by clicking the article, and the 'Unreleased' shows if it is an upcoming game instead of one already released. Splitting it would probably get confusing. I was also going to bring up WP:OVERLINKing, but it is actually ok in a table like this as readers might just be reading a single line. There may be a few varying opinions on issues like these, so do you think feedback should be enabled on this article? DarkToonLinkHeyaah! 12:00, 3 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, at this point I agree. Back when I first made the article, I thought this would be a much shorter list; I hadn't realized that majority of the titles seem to support it these days. (Though I'm glad I was wrong.) Since its such a large list and harder to manage, I think it is best to keep it as is for now. Sergecross73 msg me 12:31, 3 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Regarding feedback; feel free. I don't use it much, it seems like so many of the suggestions are ridiculous in my experience. "Write whether or not Goku is going to be in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U." That sort of nonsense, that's not covered for obvious reasons. But if you want to use it, by all means go for it. Sergecross73 msg me 12:46, 3 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
I can understand why many people aren't a fan of the feedback service. I actually quite like it, because even though the majority of stuff written there isn't very helpful, it doesn't really cost anything or get in the way so it's worth it if a reader brings up useful feedback. Early last year I actually used to supply a lot of feedback, well before I registered and started editing, and it's probably what eventually pushed me over the line into editing, so I guess I have a soft spot for it! I don't think much of the VisualEditor though... Anyway, I'll go enable feedback, and keep an eye on it if any is posted. Thanks, DarkToonLinkHeyaah! 13:05, 3 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Japanese Releases

edit

Currently the 'Released' column only lists 'JP' if the game is a Japanese game, in a similar way to when JP is or is not listed in an game's infobox, although this has been inconsistent throughout the article before. For a reader though, it may appear many games have skipped Japan, so do you think it's worth including JP in the Released column, considering most of them have been? DarkToonLink (talk) 23:56, 25 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Do whatever you like to fix this. When I created the article, my main focus was just listing all the OTV games. I had always hoped people would fix up the other columns, which I hastily created from memory. People never really did much. So yeah, please fix, it wasn't set up in this faulty way for reason, it just hasn't been fixed up yet. Sergecross73 msg me 00:30, 26 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ok, thanks! I'll do what I can to verify all the different releases. DarkToonLink (talk) 02:28, 26 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Partial/Full support

edit

Recently there have been a few edits and reverts in regard to whether a game 'fully' supports Off-TV Play or whether it supports Off-TV Play at all. I agree that any form of allowing play exclusively on the Wii U GamePad counts as supporting it. However something I wish to address is New Super Mario Bros. U. I had originally considered discussing this first, however considering it wasn't a huge change I decided to be bold but not reckless and make the change anyway (From {{Partial|Supported in single player mode only}} to {{Yes|Supported}}, with my reasons noted in the edit summary). However, there seems to be some disagreement, and after considering I agree with Sergecross73 who reverted it saying that it is worth noting the game's set up. But I still think it counts as 'Yes' rather than 'Partial' because the game can still be played entirely on the GamePad, sort of even in multiplayer. If that game has the description, others possibly should as well, ie I believe Call of Duty: Black Ops II allows multiplayer with one person using the GamePad and its screen and the other using another controller on the TV (but not both players watching splitscreen on the GamePad). I felt it was necessary to have a discussion here to clear up any discrepancies about what it means to be Off-TV, including issues such as multiplayer. Hey there. Thanks for starting up a discussion. I just felt it was necessary to note, to some degree, that there are limitations to the OTP in multiplayer since, in multiplayer, you can't play as an actual character, but rather you can just alter the level with the touchscreen to help things along. I have no problem with labeling it with a green "Supported", (I didn't come up with the color scheme, but I do think the commentary on the multi-player limitations should still be there. Is that a good compromise? Sergecross73 msg me 12:33, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I do agree it is worth noting how the GamePad is used in multiplayer, and eventually some other games may have notes if relevant. But you can play the entire game, even in multiplayer mode, on the touchscreen so I'd argue that counts as full support. Thanks, DarkToonLinkHeyaah! 21:03, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, like I was saying, I didn't set up the chart with the partial/fully stuff, just the descriptions. Now that you mention it, I'm not sure "partial" is really appropriate in any of the cases it is used. It's not "partial", there's just a note or a condition.... Sergecross73 msg me 23:16, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I am aware of that, and the descriptions are useful to the reader's understandings of how it's implemented. There is quite a grey area with partial support, because all games have some form of limitation in the mode. I actually think it's a good idea what Arkhandar started doing, by adding notes to the bottom of the page, so I may help apply this to all of the games with extra description. Minus (-) button Off-TV Play activation

edit

Since the release of The Wonderful 101 every game makes exclusive use of the minus (-) button to activate the Off-TV Play feature. It's now a requirement imposed by Nintendo to certified developers, for both first and third-party software. This includes all subsequent release including:

I know that it's going to be hard to find a source that confirms this, but there's got to be a way to differentiate this from the others. I don't know, what do you guys think?--Arkhandar (TalkContribs) 16:32, 20 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I think that if its true, I'm sure a source will make a passing comment about it sooner or later. And it should probably stay out until we have that. Until you have the generalization source, I suppose, in theory, you could make more of a comment along the lines that "Game X (source), Game Y (source) and Game Z (source) initiates OTVP by pressing the minus button." You can't really talk about it being that like going into the future, but you could at least state the bare facts that games are doing it. Sergecross73 msg me 16:46, 20 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Pikmin 3 was released before The Wonderful 101, though, and in between those two games were Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Rayman Legends, (depending on regions) which handled it via a menu. I'm not sure about a lot of the indie games, other than Toki Tori 2+. Just because a few games in a row use the - button really doesn't confirm it until we have a source that says something like "in response to critisisms about inconsistent implementation, Nintendo have now made it a requirement for developers to use the - button to activate it." At the moment it may just be a trend but not a requirement. DarkToonLinkHeyaah! 01:29, 21 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Oh, you're right. I was thinking about the demo, which was released first. Rayman Legends was supposed to launch back in February so it's only natural that it still isn't implemented in that game. Maybe we can ask the official Two Tribes twitter account if they could confirm if it's indeed a requirement or just a suggestion.--Arkhandar (TalkContribs) 14:00, 21 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
That sounds like a good idea. I doubt it's really the sort of thing that would be under a NDA or something! DarkToonLinkHeyaah! 14:07, 21 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Are you going to do it or would you like me or somebody else to? A statement from a developer would probably be ok as a source, or if it gets reported on, if this turns out to be true. DarkToonLinkHeyaah! 15:17, 21 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
I don't have a twitter account so if you could do it I would be much appreciated :) --Arkhandar (TalkContribs) 15:22, 21 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Done "@TwoTribesGames Is Off-TV activation by using the - button, as in Toki Tori 2+ now mandatory by Nintendo or just following a trend? Thanks!" I tried to make it un-ambiguous, but I'm a bit tired... I hope they reply! DarkToonLinkHeyaah! 16:04, 21 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
They replied. "It made sense to us. Seems to become the standard" So not a requirement but seems to be devs trying to achieve something a bit more uniform. DarkToonLinkHeyaah! 01:28, 22 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Now, what should we do? Is it notable enough to mention it in the article?--Arkhandar (TalkContribs) 01:45, 22 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome! I think we should maybe wait a bit longer to see how much more this is followed. If a few more games use the minus button, then maybe it's worth mentioning. DarkToonLinkHeyaah! 02:01, 22 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
