editI have added a bare-bones history of video editing. I didn't want to go into a lot of detail, since Wikipedia already has major articles on linear and non-linear editing techniques. These should be referenced here, but I'm not sure how to do that. Fine tuning this article
editWikipedia has at least two articles on "non-destructive editing": this one and Non-linear editing system. That other article is focussed on editing video in ways that doesn't involve chopping up tap reels. A second topic worth covering is the non-destructive editing for 2D images done by PhotoShop since CS3 and done by current development versions of GIMP.
Is there just those two topics? Can the video bits of this article be moved over to Non-linear editing system and then this article be refocussed on editing 2D images? Are their other types of data that gets edited in layered ways with the final product being regenerated each time without the original source data being permanently modified? - Advanced text editors (Emacs, Notepad++, gVim, TextEdit...) have infinite undo/redo with undo tree which is in a sense non-destructive text editing. Kazkaskazkasako (talk) 09:11, 21 April 2012 (UTC)
