Expanding Article
editI'm not sure if anyone is actively editing this page, but I'm going to try to spend some time translating content from the german version of the article. I've added a uk canal info box. This is a problem in that it uses imperial measurements, and I will try to build a metric one, or talk to the UK waterways editors, to see if I can have it handle both imperial and metric. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Drew.sonne (talk • contribs) 10:22, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
- This would be great. For conversion between imperial and metric, use {{convert}}, which does it automatically, and please do not forget to add reliable sources to the new text (they could be in German as well).--Ymblanter (talk) 10:25, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

- ... that according to rumour, the Masurian Canal (abandoned lock structure pictured) was built to serve a U-boat facility?
(English: legend says that the Germans allegedly intended the canal to transport submarines that were to be manufactured or repaired in Mauerwald. However, there is no evidence of this - at least up to now - in historical documents.) source
- The internal dimensions of [two buildings] are so large that when the site was investigated after the war, it was thought that these were factory buildings that were to be used for the assembly of U-boats, which, when completed, were to be sailed through the Masurian Canal down to the Baltic. This created a legend that still endures despite being disproven. source

Comprehensive article on an interesting engineering ruin; the fact of the legend is well-sourced; the photo is CC-by-3 and clear enough even in small format; thank you for your contribution to the encyclopedia. Nice job. jengod (talk) 00:17, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
What for?
editIt would be nice to see in the article a discussion of why anyone wanted such a canal. It would have been very expensive; there must have been specific gains expected. They may be obvious to experts but not to readers like me. Also, the reasons are likely to have changed with time. Zaslav (talk) 02:07, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
- According to the map in the area there is a lot marshland and forested land. Now there is a railway, I don't know if it was there in that period, but I guess it would have been busy and it doesn't go in the direction of Kaliningrad anyway. An alternative way to transport goods seems a reasonable explanation. Especially if the Germans wanted to expand their settlements in an area contended with the Poles. Długopole lock
editThe co-ords are given as 54.3062°N 21.4948°E, but I think they should be 54.3039°N, 21.4948°E; the former location appears to be 265 m slightly west of north from where the structure seems to be. Prisoner of Zenda (talk) 08:47, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
- Closer inspection shows that the structure seems to be located at 54.3060°N, 21.4949°E, about 26 m slightly east of south from the given co-ords. Prisoner of Zenda (talk) 09:23, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
Dubious claim
editThe claim that the real purpose was to serve a secret U-boat facility may have been useful to get a nomination and attract some attention, but it does not stand. A quick survey with Marble(OpenStreetmap view) and Google satellite view is enough to verify that some of the locks were too small for the u-boats, they could not go though. Furthermore even if back then it was Prussian territory there were also ethic poles in the area. So the canal was exposed to possible espionage. WornOutCog (talk) 14:11, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
