editThis was one of the best characters ever introduced and certainly a huge change from others we'd seen before (at least up until the 70s at this point). Mantis' pasttime as a prostitute, though never actually stated in the original run (I think Englehart said she was a "barmaid") doesnt make sense, considering all the time and energy the priests of Pama put into her training. I mean, seriously- would you devote that kind of work into someone and then let them go off and become a man's plaything? In fact, is this an occupation she would even have taken?? Given her obvious intelligence, supreme martial arts skills, etc. life as a "barmaid" just wouldnt ever have been a reality for her.
But wasn't that part of the original quasi-religious concept? She's a Mary Magdalene archetype; from humble beginnings, the Celestial Madonna is born. She's a symbol for the joined virgin/whore dichotomy, and she gets to have both aspects and still be respected, revered, etc. That's what I always thought Englehart was saying with the character.--Erikacornia 18:46, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
Yet another story modern folk always get wrong- Mary Magdalene, whatever incarnation you pick, was never said to be a prostitute- the Bible says she was a Sinner. Period. And just about everyone can be classified as a Sinner. Why does Sinner, applied to a woman, have to equal something improper about her sexuality? She could have just as easily been a thief, an assassin , etc. There is nothing that indicates the woman ( and there were several Marys in the Bible) was a prostitue. This lie has persisted due to ignorance and no doubt chauvenism. ~ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.34.195.220 (talk) 08:00, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
I have to agree- Steve Englehart is a good writer but time to time he'll pull something in out of left field that makes no sense. It doesn't make sense that the priests of Pama trained and educated her like that, then abandon it all so she can do the whore thing. Nothing against prostitutes, but Mantis had other qualities she could use instead of picking that career. Also, not all barmaids are prostitutes. Steve did this same thing when he turned the Falcon from a social worker, to a pimp. If you know all the study and hours you have to put in to become a social worker, there's just no time left over to be a pimp LOL. 152.131.10.70 (talk) 16:54, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
Iconic image?
editSurely we can find a better depiction of Mantis for the info box than that horrid illustration of a character that wasn't even her from heroes reborn, can't we? Cockrum did some lovely illustrations of her. I don't know enough to edit that part well, but here's asking.--Erikacornia 18:49, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Agreed. Someone please find a better one and change the picture! STFmaryville 11:47, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
Trans"plant"ataion
editIt just occurred to me that Mantis's later ability to shift her consciousness across the universe, from one world's vegetation to another, is exactly like the Swamp Thing's ability. Not suggesting it's a swipe or anything either way, but it may be worthwhile to mention it in the article. Korvac 16:24, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
Willow, Lorelei
editThey get listed as aliases in the box, but the history (understandably) skips over her non-Marvel history. Maybe this should be mentioned in a "Trivia" section or something? Daibhid C 10:01, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
- I asked Steve Englehart where I might find a decent account of the character's journey through Marvel, DC, Eclipse, and back to Marvel. He comments on it in the relevant points at his website [1], but a complete account has yet to be published. He said he "very much enjoyed moving her from company" and thinks an article about the trip along the way would be fun. Doczilla 04:46, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
Annihilation: Conquest?
editSeeing as Mantis is going to be in the forthcoming 'Annihilation: Conquest: Starlord' mini-series, should this be mentioned in her bio or should it wait to be edited in until the mini-series is out this Summer? I'm kinda surprised she went from the Avengers to Peter Quill's new space team, but eh, whatever. Mekairinek 21:02, 09 April 2007 (UTC)
- WikiProject Comics guidelines say to wait until it happens within the canon. Doczilla 03:49, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Intercompany history
editShould this information be presented as canon? I like the idea of seeing this info in the article, but I don't think we should have her hopping from one company to another displayed as part of the Marvel canon. 204.153.84.10 15:11, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

Mantis referring to herself as "this one"
editDo you think we could expand a bit on her habit of referring to herself in the third person (like I did in this edit)? This speech mannerism of hers is mentioned in almost every source that describes her. --GLTPRE (talk) 15:47, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you for starting a discussion on this matter. If this aspect is so important and so frequently discussed, then please provide a source that's more apt. Screenrant's "article" does not (to me) seem like a reliable source. Checkout out Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources for more info. Nor does it support the conclusions you are inferring from it, which is called WP:SYNTHESIS. JesseRafe (talk) 16:04, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
