Should this be renamed as "Malay styles and titles", to parallel Styles and titles of peers for the UK? Jpatokal 6 July 2005 08:00 (UTC)

Good idea; will do.--Parkwells (talk) 19:30, 13 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Looks like there should be sections (or new page) for Bruneian Titles and Malaysian Titles. And probably this page should be cleaned up and organised. Looks messy to me. Gross 12:14, 19 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Set up sections for Malaysia and Brunei titles.--Parkwells (talk) 19:30, 13 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

I agree; there's a lot of good information here, but it's very hard to follow at times.

Datuk & Dato'

edit

http://www.kln.gov.my/ shows both Datuk and Dato' Seri Syed Hamid Albar on the same page and similar dates. Can you clarify the differences between the two titles? TransUtopian 12:06, 16 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Singapore

edit

Singapore, whose Malay royalty was abolished by the British colonial government in 1891, has adopted civic titles for its leaders.

Abolish?! Singapore never had a Malay ruler of its own. Prior to British colonialisation, Singapore was a part of theSultanate of Johor. Joshua Chiew 23:56, 9 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

From 1819 to 1891 there was a Sultan of Singapore, and Kampong Glam was the seat of the Sultanate. He was a figurehead, of course. Jpatokal 12:09, 10 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Raja Muda, Tengku Mahkota and other royal titles

edit

I'm enlightened to the confusion caused by other royal titles which are not addressed in this article by a fellow Wikipedia contributor. Perhaps that section can be expanded. I'm also interested in seeing the explanation of titles in Perak which has a complex succession system.Wai Hong 07:57, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

There also some titles that did not included in this list. 1. Engku/ Ungku 2. Tun (Granted by sultan terengganu to his minister, prior to 1900) The title can be heridita by heir. 3. Tan Sri Amar Diraja (Tan Sri Amar Diraja Dato Seri Haji Wan Mokhtar bin Ahmad, MB of Terengganu (until 1999) which state granted this titles? 4. Raja 5. Please give definitions to these titles

edit

This article may be meaningful to Malaysians, but it leaves Westerners scratching their heads. I was introduced to someone with the title of Datuk the other day. So what does that mean??? What sort of status does his title infer? Is he merely an esquire or is his position more like that of a Count or Duke? I realise that titles aren't necessarily exactly transferable to titles in other cultures, but surely rank approximations could be given! Does his title hold similar status to a knight? Or is he a royal prince? Such titles in the West imply entirely different status. I figure the whole point in having honours and titles is to enhance and acknowledge the status of the holder. If we don't know what that status is, then the purpose is lost outside the Malay hinterland, so why bother writing this article in the English wikipedia if you don't want non-Malays to know? Back to my original question - what exactly is a Datuk anyway and should I give him lower precedence at my dinner party than a Knight/Dame or should I seat him above an Earl??? Or should I just dismiss Malay titles as irrelevant and without status in the wider world since the wider world is left scratching their heads! Whenever I do a search on google i just end up with a replication of the same unhelpful wikipedia article. Maybe I should send the next Datuk I meet to wash up my dishes and shine my shoes, because I have no idea what a Datuk is. 121.73.7.84 (talk) 09:42, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

This article does not define the titles in terms of role and/or function, nor does it provide analogs for English speakers. (I was the one who changed the title of this Talk section) 99.22.228.93 (talk) 19:20, 8 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

@99.22.228.93, yes I can see that - and so back to my original points... 121.73.7.84 (talk) 11:04, 2 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Malaysia is too small a country to have the self-centered arrogance of America or China or Russia. So what do your titles mean? If you think the status of Malaysian titles shound only apply to Malaysia and be irrelevant abroad then I think that is sad. A British lord has status abroad, so I think a Mlalaysian title should also. Give us some idea of what these titles mean. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.73.7.84 (talk) 10:50, 2 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have corrected the English in this subsection. I hope I understood it correctly. The first sentence was unintelligible. Caeruleancentaur (talk) 12:23, 5 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

The language spoken in Indonesia and Philippines are not same as that of Malaysia nor shall we allow Malaysia to turn them into proxy!
