This list is only for characters specifically identified as gay—by onscreen portrayal or film dialog—in live action feature films released in theaters, streaming platforms, or direct-to-video. Characters must be supported with published reliable sources that explicitly confirm their gay identity. Please read "user-generated content" for sources that are not acceptable. |

Note to Editors
editPer WP:BLOGS – "Self-published expert sources may be considered reliable when produced by an established subject-matter expert, whose work in the relevant field has previously been published by reliable, independent publications."
Not every film released in the past and today is reviewed by a mainstream media source (such as The New York Times) or website (such as Deadline Hollywood). Sometimes the only reviews are found in niche publications and blogs by film experts.
In 2010, Film Comment published a list of film blogs: "The Top Film Criticism Sites: An Annotated Blog Roll".
Listed (and linked) in alphabetical order, these are the film blogs in the Film Comment article (some URLs changed since the article was published, while some blogs are no longer active):

Films removed from list for lacking reliable sources
editWhen reliable sources are found that verify the inclusion of gay characters, the film (row) can be re-added in the list:
| 2022
| La Frontière
| Oliver
| JP Morin
| Oliver has been unhappily married to a woman named Chris. They split up when Oliver meets Tommy and falls in love with him. (Tommy is bisexual and in an open relationship with his female partner Greta.)

Reminder: films with Gay characters from original list
editFilms in the original list needing reliable sources were moved to its Talk page after that list was split into separate L-G-B-T lists. There are films with Gay characters waiting to be added to this list with RS. See Films to be added to split list. Pyxis Solitary (yak yak). Ol' homo. 08:16, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
The Lighthouse
editDespite the film having explicit details of male sexuality, it's still hard to debate whether The Lighthouse should be put in this category. Any opinions? Runningman2027 (talk) 22:43, 4 December 2022 (UTC)
- Are there sources that describe one or more characters as being gay? That's what all films depend on to be included in the list. We don't decide if a film merits inclusion because we think it does. If you cannot find sources to verify the "gay", the film doesn't belong in the list. Pyxis Solitary (yak). L not Q. 08:14, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
Splitting the list
editThe list is organized by subsections for decades and years, and I don't have a problem finding films in it, but I guess it's time to split the list as:
- List of feature films with gay characters: 1900–1999
and
- List of feature films with gay characters: 2000–present
Anyone else in on it? Pyxis Solitary (yak yak). Ol' homo. 08:37, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
Mrs. Doubtfire
editPlease, remind me which character is gay inside that film... Sebastián Arena... 21:58, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- The cited source (a review by Roger Ebert) mentions Frank:
But soon the plot machinery begins to creak. His wife Miranda (Sally Field) can no longer endure his little eccentricities, like hiring a private zoo for their son's birthday party. She files for divorce. The judge gives Daniel visitation rights only on Saturdays. And so he turns in desperation to his gay brother, Frank (Harvey Fierstein), a makeup expert, who helps disguise him as the redoubtable Mrs. Doubtfire, a younger but not slimmer Miss Marple.
- However, although the article mentions Jack, that name NEVER appears in Ebert's article... Historyday01 (talk) 12:59, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
- As pointed out above, the source (https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/mrs-doubtfire-1993) identifies "Frank (Harvey Fierstein)" as being "gay".
I recommend that you read the cited sources before wonderingwhich character is gay
in a film. The lists for feature films with lesbian / gay / bisexual / transgender characters must include published sources and the sources must explicitly verify the L or G or B or T (i.e. if a character is a gay man, the source must say "gay" or "homosexual" for the character; the term "queer" is not good enough because "queer" is non-specific and can be interpreted to mean bisexual, non-binary, pansexual, etc.).
As for the Jack character, a source needs to be added that confirms he is gay. Without it the name has to be removed from the list. Pyxis Solitary (yak yak). Ol' homo. 21:50, 2 May 2024 (UTC)- Right, I agree with that. There need to be reliable sources proving a character's identity. Historyday01 (talk) 19:25, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
