Spelling of Ali Imran issue

edit

This has been discussed a lot on the Ali Imran page by several people. The use of the hyphen is a mistake. Academic precedent and most English translations use either "Ali Imran" or "Al Imran". "Al-Imran" implies the definite article (there is no reason to hyphenate two nouns together in Arabic transcriptions) and "Al-i-Imran" just looks Persian and is definitely not a standard way of transcribing Arabic. The Encyclopedia of Islam only uses the hyphen for grammatical elision and the joining of certain conjunctions and prepositions. There is definitely no reason to split off the final vowel (silenced or not) of a noun with a hyphen (the transcription I just removed was spelling the word for "family", in effect, as "Al-i")

As far as I can tell from contemporary sources, only two spells are appropriate:

"Ali Imran" (The grammatical puritan spelling) "Al Imran" (Closer to real life pronunciation and strictly without the hyphen so as to distinguish it from all those surahs that indeed begin with the definite article)

An experienced editor needs to solve this problem below:

"Ali Imran" goes to a fictional character (another completely different name...)

So, "Al Imran" it is, on this list at least, until someone can get that article out of the way and rename both the list item and the article itself as "Ali Imran"

Sun letter assimilation

edit

I kinda think it's not-OK how most of the links are dead due to the person who added the link using different Romanization than that used in the title of the corresponding article: 1) the links don't assimilate the lām in al- to following sun letters while the article titles do; 2) the links mark vowel length and pharyngealization while the article titles don't. In a few installments I'm going to fix all those links. But I'm just wondering if the text in the links should show the assimilation (why on Earth wouldn't/don't they?)Cromulant (talk) 22:29, 24 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
