Birthdate
editI'm unable to confirm Keiko's birthday as given here, but I've added her to the list of birthdays for July 26. Can someone provide a source to confirm this info? --Stormraven 14:49, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
Expansion
editI've just expanded this article. Some of the references from the previous stub have been deleted due to my inability to confirm them. For the sake of clarity and continuity, I'll list some of the deletions in the hopes that if someone is later able to confirm them, they will restore the information to the article. According to my research...
- I am unable to confirm a timeline for Keiko's studies at Yamaha Music Foundation, which may have occurred after she graduated from Japan Women's University or might have been concurrent with her studies there.
- Keiko did not form the band Cosmos.
- Kazu Matsui was not a member of Cosmos.
- I've concluded that it is most likely that Keiko met Kazu in the United States, but I also found one assertion that it happened in Japan.
- I am unable to confirm that Keiko played with a studio group called Soul Ballad.
I am also still unable to confirm Keiko's birthdate, but I'm leaving that in. My request for confirmation on this fact (above) stands.
There are problems in the discography, most notably the missing Cosmos albums. Because several albums were re-released, there's some confusion coordinating studios with albums. My intention was to give the studio responsible for each album's first release.
Cult following?
editWhen I expanded this article, I deliberately removed the reference to a "cult following," as that term would seem to diminish the size and scope of Matsui's fan base. Her chart positions and therefore album sales would surely indicate that she has more than a mere cult following. But anonymous user 71.107.195.137 has seen fit to add it back in. I'd rather not just edit it out again without discussion. Can anyone justify this position? Stormraven 14:10, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
- In several respects "cult following" is an imprecise term that can mean a variety of things. There are totally mainstream musicians who are deemed to have a "cult following" because a portion of their fans are unusually loyal or devoted. I'd have to know the loyalty of her fanbase to consider if it's appropriate, but to be honest I'd generally avoid terms like that unless their "cult following" is significant to their history. (As it is in cases like Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Nick Drake, or Morrissey) Still I don't think Keiko Matsui's following is large enough to be any more mainstream than majority of the musicians I just named, but I'm not certain of that.--T. - Thanks for your comments, T. Anthony. I've decided I'm not in a position to make the judgment call with any credibility, so I will neither remove nor restore the term. But I'm glad to see someone taking an interest in the discussion. :) --Stormraven 13:19, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
- I used to listen to a CD of hers before falling to sleep. Although the one I have is more New-Agey, which I like that for sleeping, and I'd sort of been curious about her earlier "jazzier" stuff.--T. Anthony 15:36, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
- I removed the peacock terms for a neutral point of view to improve this article. Need a source before adding back in. Cricket02 07:02, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
Asian American?
editAs far as I can determine, Keiko is not a resident of the US. The latest information I have is that she lives in Japan. While she might have lived in the US for awhile early in her career (is there a source for that claim in the article?) I think it's pretty clear that Japan is home. Her children live in Japan. Her fan newsletters frequently refer to missing her children (staying with grandparents in Japan) when she is touring or recording. She seems to go back and forth between Japan and the US, and while she enjoys the US, I think she considers Japan home. Some excerpts from her newletters:
- Fall 2000 : "We had a nice summer in California with our daughters and Keiko's mother." The tone of the newsletter suggests she was "away from home". At best she was "living" there for the Summer.
- Feb 2001 : "We are back in Japan..."
- Jul 2001 : "How are you and your family? We have not written for some months. Sorry about that. We have been busy, making albums, touring, PTA meetings, Mako's Sports day running etc. It is getting hot and humid in Tokyo." ... "Everyone is fine in Japan. Maya is in Junior High school now."
- Fall 2001 : "Winter is here. It is getting colder and colder in Tokyo."
I'll skip a bunch. The last one I have is the Spring 2005 newsletter which starts off
- Spring 2005 : "How are you? We are fine. In April, when cherry blossoms are in full bloom, Maya became 2nd year in high school and Mako became 4th grader in elementary school. Our daughters are growing so fast, almost as fast as Avocado trees in Southern California. And they are really smart and diligent trees.
We could not see them going through the arch of cherry trees, congratulating the new school year, since we were touring in U.S. But our minds are always with them, and we get frequent reports from them and their grandmother, what is going on in Tokyo, by fax and phone."
I checked her current websites hoping to find something definitive one way or the other, but couldn't find anything. At the most, she is a part-time resident the US. Home certainly seems to be Japan, where her children go to school. Hence, the label "Asian American" is not appropriate. Zubdub 06:16, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
- Even if she was a resident of the US, that doesn't automatically make her an American. Why? Because you have to be a citizen of the United States to be classified as an American, and no amount of wishful thinking is going to change that. My cousin has lived in the US permanently for 15 years and even has a Texas accent going, but as a non-US citizen, he is not an American of any sorts - just a British Ex-pat.--171.216.75.108 (talk) 13:38, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
