Edits to Kony 2012 and Religious Beliefs sections
editHello. I think this page has some moderate neutrality issues. I just made some edits to the page which I hope are improvements, although I believe there is more work to be done. I removed some unsubstantiated claims and non-NPOV language in the Kony 2012 video section. I also made some changes to the "Religious Beliefs" section, because some claims were not supported by their citations, and others were irrelevant or had no citations at all. Please feel free to reply if you disagree or have questions with my changes. I don't have a long history with Wikipedia and am happy to receive feedback on my edits.
Kony 2012 Video Section
- I changed the phrasing of "widely criticized" to "criticized". The main article for the video suggests that, while there certainly was a substantial amount of criticism for the video, there was also a substantial amount of praise. I believe the word "widely" is not encyclopedic in this context and gives the impression that the reaction was exclusively or overwhelmingly negative, which is not supported by the main article.
- I removed the claim that the video was criticized because its creators spent "most of the money on themselves". This criticism was not aimed at the video itself but at the organization that created the video, and seems to be a detail better left to the page itself. It's also not entirely true; the claim isn't that any embezzlement occured, but that the organization devotes too much money to publicity and advocacy, and not enough to on-the-ground work.
- I removed the claim that there was criticism of the video for being hypocritical due to the Ugandan army's own human rights violations. I didn't see this claim anywhere in the cited sources, and it's sufficiently puzzling that I think a source is required. The video was not produced by the Ugandan army. Furthermore it seems an unlikely source of criticism--one could equally argue that it is hypocritical to oppose ISIS without also mentioning human rights violations committed by groups fighting ISIS (I suppose that's my opinion, but I do think a source is necessary).
Religious Views
- Added specificity to claims about family size from sources.
- I do not think that the Green book is a good source, because reviews indicate it is a primary source/memoir about a man's journey to find out about Kony. However, I don't own the book and it's not in my library, so I did not remove it. If someone owns the book, maybe the specific claims are cited within the book and those citations could be used?
- The 2nd paragraph contained a claim about prayer before a peace talk. This claim is certainly believable but it was not cited, and the specific peace talk was not mentioned. I replaced it with a claim that is different, but still hopefully conveys the nature of Kony's religious beliefs.
- Previously, the words "Holy Spirit" linked to the page about the Holy Spirit from Christianity, i.e. one of the members of the trinity. I know that Kony's views include Christianity (Ten Commandments), but it's not clear that this is the correct link. Firstly, Kony is actually quoted as saying "Holy Spirits", which sounds plural, and secondly, his movement was originally called the "Holy Spirit Movement", which may have been related to Christianity, but was more of a political movement. I removed the link, although maybe it should link to the "Holy Spirit Movement" page. Ludicous (talk • contribs) 20:01, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
Invalid source for birth date
editNot the Britannica source given, nor its archived version, mention Kony's exact birth date, although so referenced. --Kissa21782 (talk) 18:16, 4 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Kissa21782: Good catch! The claimed date was inserted in these two IP edits (which may still warrant scrutiny in other parts too). I have restored the "likely 1961" wording that is actually supported by the reference. Regards, HaeB (talk) 05:36, 5 June 2019 (UTC)
