Removed unsourced statement
editI have removed an unsourced and arguably contentious statement from this article (see Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons#Remove unsourced or poorly sourced contentious material). If the statement can be sourced, it can be reinstated. Gildir (talk) 18:48, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

cleanup
editThe recent AfD ended in no consensus (default to keep), but there is almost universal recognition that the article is WP:PUFF. I'll give others the first right of refusal for a week or two to delete unsourced/promo material, otherwise I'll take a crack at it myself. Thanks, Agricola44 (talk) 16:12, 26 December 2012 (UTC).
- Although the recent AfD was "no consensus", there was broad agreement that much of the article was WP:PUFF. I've made an attempt to clean this up. Specifically I've deleted WP:OR, trivia and minutiae (much of the article seemed to be a personal narrative, including future plans, hobbies, etc.), instances of misusing personal web-pages and blogs as sources, de-redlinked, etc. (I've moved some of these "sources" to "external links", where they properly belong.) I have not removed all non-WP:RS material, for example regarding her employment at NASA, which is sourced with a personal webpage and some NSF public relations websites. Even at this, it seems there is little left and there is really no credible claim of notability. Perhaps this should be notability-tagged, but I'll defer that for now. Other opinions would be very helpful here. Thanks, Agricola44 (talk) 19:32, 24 January 2013 (UTC).
- I have restored the reference to Meir growing up in Caribou, Maine, which is included in the list of categories. I have also restored the reference to her service as an aquanaut (on NEEMO 4), which is also included in the categories and illustrated in one of the photos. The article was originally one of a long series I wrote on aquanauts (especially those from the NEEMO missions) who did not previously have articles. Gildir (talk) 20:00, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
- I see two problems here. First, you're adding details on a BLP having no real WP:RS (strictly speaking, personal web pages, even from NASA, are not acceptable). Second, there is no real claim of notability here (being an "aquanaut" is not notable per se), so I think tagging may be in order if an actual claim cannot be made sometime soon. I have done some preliminary checking and cannot find anything for which this person might actually be notable. Please add something, if you know of it, and please make sure it is properly sourced (i.e. no more web pages or Youtube videos) and we can go from there. Thanks so much, Agricola44 (talk) 18:05, 28 January 2013 (UTC).
- This article is still problematic, as almost none of the sources are WP:RS, while the sources that are satisfactory mention the subject only peripherally. I'm going to do some homework here to see if I can find anything acceptable in the way of sources. I invite interested parties to do the same. The current webcruft has to be struck from sources and moved to external links, where it belongs. I will do this once I've determined what else is out there. Thanks, Agricola44 (talk) 20:01, 3 February 2013 (UTC).
Post-2nd-AfD
editThe article has now gone through back-to-back AfDs, both ending in no-consensus. The main problem is that there are still lots of sources that are not WP:RS/WP:INDY, which create a strong perception of non-notability (not to mention that they violate WP:BLP, which importantly puts the burden of proof on inclusion). I propose that the sources in this article must be brought in-line with WP:BLP/WP:RS/WP:INDY according to the following observations and will wait a few weeks (to give other interested parties right of first refusal) before making these changes.
- Scott GR et al "Point: Counterpoint "High Altitude is / is not for the Birds!". J. App. Physiol., in press. peer-reviewed article, establishes Meir's area of work: keep
- Knight K (May 12, 2011) "Penguins continue diving long after muscles run out of oxygen". ScienceDaily LLC. a "news and views" piece derived from J. Exp. Biol. article by Eurekalert – independent of Meir; keep
- Whiteman L (February 15, 2011) "Into Thin Air". NSF public-relations web-piece promoting work funded by them. move to "external links"
- Arnold C (April 15, 2011) "Sky's No Limit in High-Flying Goose Chase" U.S. News & World Report. news article independent of Meir: keep
- Meir J. "Meet Jessica Meir" NASA Quest. personal web-page: move to "external links"
- NASA (March 21, 2006) "NEEMO History". NASA PR page: move to "external links"
- NASA (April 21, 2011) "Life Sciences Data Archive Experiment". official NASA mission description: keep
- Williams CL (2011) "What triggers the aerobic dive limit? Patterns of muscle oxygen depletion during dives of emperor penguins" J. Exp. Biol. 214, 1802-1812. peer-reviewed article, establishes Meir's area of work: keep
- Yasuda M (July 6, 2011). "Elephant Seals - Earthguide". Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Scripps public-relations web-piece "With content provided by Jessica Meir...": move to "external links"
- Kwok R (April 24, 2011) "Secrets of the world's extreme divers" Science News for Kids. web-zine, but appears to be independent of Meir: keep
- Whiteman L (May 10, 2011) "Modern "Mother Goose" Attempts to Unravel the Flight of the Bar-Headed Goose" LiveScience. PR-piece written by NSF employee (see above) to promote funded work, cf. "This work, funded by a National Science Foundation International Research Fellowship Program grant...": move to "external links"
- D'Aliesio R (May 26, 2011) "Extreme trekkers, citizen scientists" Globe and Mail. news article independent of Meir: keep
with content edited commensurately with the above changes. Comments welcome. Agricola44 (talk) 18:18, 27 February 2013 (UTC).
- The above changes were made. Almost everything moved to "external links" was used in a multiple citation context, so very little text was lost. The remaining sources are now in line with WP:RS/WP:INDY. Thanks, Agricola44 (talk) 15:57, 20 May 2013 (UTC).
Astronaut
editShe is now a NASA astronaut so I guess this solves the issue of notability. Hektor (talk) 16:00, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
- I don't know whether there is consensus on such a point, as there is at least some past discussion asserting that notability per se only applies once you've flown. At any rate, this does not seem to be an issue at the moment. Thanks, Agricola44 (talk) 20:29, 17 June 2013 (UTC).
- There seems to be a national bias there. I have noticed that Astronaut Candidates from NASA, ESA or Canada get immediately their article, but this is not the case for Russian cosmonaut candidates. 195.169.141.54 (talk) 06:50, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
- Meir's article has been around for a while, i.e. well before she became an astronaut candidate. Her notability was questionable at that time (2 AfDs ending in "no consensus"), so this this particular case is really more of a coincidence with respect to national bias. However, I agree with what appears to be your tacit point that candidates are not notable per se. Agricola44 (talk) 15:01, 18 June 2013 (UTC).
- Considering the fact that the Astronaut Class of 2013 has completed training quite some time ago, it is no longer proper to call them 'Astronaut candidates' rather they should be called 'Astronauts' which is only right. This is true for all 'Astronaut candidates' of the Class of 2013 and probably of that of 2015 as well. A new class was recently selected in June 2017. I understand that some members of the Astronaut Class of 2013 have already been assigned to future ISS missions. Please see <https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Nick_Hague>. Thanks. Abul Bakhtiar (talk) 14:53, 28 February 2018 (UTC)
- It would be quite funny if she eventually became the first woman on the Moon and had been proposed for deletion (twice) by Wikipedia. Hektor (talk) 22:28, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

Use of "astronaut"
editI thought it was the convention to not call someone an astronaut (cosmonaut, taikonaut, etc.) until they've actually traveled to space, which Meir has not. Is that not the case anymore? -- Hux (talk) 16:45, 6 September 2019 (UTC)

Possibly restructure NASA career part???
editI'm thinking this might need to be restructured. I've found a whole bunch more info on NASA's site, and even before I add it, this section is still looking a bit long and a list-like. It's turning into, at this point, into a bunch of unlinked statements. Also, she has recently done some work with ESA which I don't think ought to fall under the category of 'NASA career'. Maybe 'Aerospace career'? 'Spaceflight career'? I'd appreciate a little guidance/advice because I'm a little unsure; since I'm a relatively new user. Thanks :) Watermelon-lemon (talk) 00:19, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

"Relevance of Hanukkah celebration"
editRegarding "Relevance of Hanukkah celebration? Not the first Jewish astronaut to do so, much less the first astronaut to celebrate a religious holiday in space"—what matters, in my opinion, is what is applicable to the subject of the biography. Firsts are not necessarily what matters. Pinging Rosbif73. Bus stop (talk) 19:37, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
- I'd venture to suggest that this mention is pretty much WP:INDISCRIMINATE trivia, given that there's no "first" involved. Rosbif73 (talk) 22:01, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
- Rosbif73—you are pointing out something that is not applicable to the subject of the article. It doesn't matter that she is "Not the first Jewish astronaut to do so, much less the first astronaut to celebrate a religious holiday in space". I think we are concerned with what is applicable, not with what isn't applicable. Bus stop (talk) 22:36, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
- Dozens of astronauts have celebrated religious festivals in space, but (with the possible exception of firsts), this isn't mentioned in their articles. There's nothing any more fundamentally noteworthy about a Jewish astronaut celebrating Hanukkah in space than there is about a Christian astronaut celebrating Christmas in space. Sure, you have a reliable source that mentions the fact, but trivial facts are regularly mentioned in reliable sources and that doesn't make those facts any less trivial or any more worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, as explained on the WP:NOT policy page that WP:INDISCRIMINATE is a part of. Rosbif73 (talk) 11:04, 26 December 2019 (UTC)

Photo Gallery/Extra Photos
editGreetings. Could a gallery be started of Jessica Meir, with pictures of her doing various tasks like spacewalk training, etc. An example would be on Sunita Williams' article here. I once added a few images on this article, but removed them out of fear of getting penalized for not having permission in the first place. These are the 2 files I would like added in the main article: File:Jessica Meir - Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (1).jpg File:Meir and Hill.jpg I know the Meir & Hill image is of poor quality, so can you look for another image of her at NASA before becoming an astronaut? I don't want to "bloat the article" or anything, but I think it would be better to add more pictures. That's all. Cheers. Jgwilliams873 (talk) 18:21, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

Jessica Meir (born 1977) is an American-Swedish NASA astronaut, marine biologist, and physiologist. She was previously an assistant professor of anesthesia at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, following postdoctoral research in comparative physiology at the University of British Columbia. She has studied the diving physiology and behavior of emperor penguins in Antarctica, and the physiology of bar-headed geese, which are able to migrate over the Himalayas. Meir launched on September 25, 2019, to the International Space Station onboard Soyuz MS-15, where she served as a flight engineer during Expedition 61 and Expedition 62. On October 18, 2019, Meir and Christina Koch became the first women to participate in an all-female spacewalk. Photograph credit: Robert Markowitz
