'True 3D'
editA few points:
- FWIW, I've never heard of Dark Forces referred to as anything other than a 2.5D game.
- The Colony, Pathways Into Darkness and Marathon were all earlier games that allowed rooms to overlap vertically.
- Didn't Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss have vertical look before DF? If not, Marathon still did.

- The Underworld games did have limited vertical look, and also had thin bridges (IIRC). System Shock, which used a more advanced version of the engine was true 3D (and had full vertical look), "force bridges" and wireframe cyberspace flying sections.--Drat (Talk) 07:23, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

- What about polygonal 3D objects that can freely move and rotate in all dimensions, such as the ship at the end of the first level? That seems equivalent to Descent's capabilities. 66.8.153.181 (talk) 07:44, 13 June 2020 (UTC)

- Yes I'm talking about Dark Forces, and I'm referring to in-game realtime rendered. Just at the end of the first level, your ship flies out of the sky as you're fighting the last of the stormtroopers on a rooftop, then hovers overhead waiting for you to end the level. The ship moves and rotates freely through a preprogrammed path, it's composed of textured polygons tilted in all dimensions, and can be observed from any angle.
- Similar effects are used throughout Dark Forces for a variety of objects, and they appear technologically distinct from, e.g., mobile objects in Build Engine games, such as the forklift in Shadow Warrior, which I'm aware are composed of level geometry (sectors,) that restrict their use of rotation in more than one dimension, unlike polygonal objects in Dark Forces. 2600:1700:DA90:2AB0:DD01:7756:8B1D:A60C (talk) 09:26, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
