I'm also informed and believe that James Roosevelt ran for Governor of California against Earl Warren in the early 1950's

The linked New York Times obituary says he graduated from Harvard: "Soon after graduating from Harvard College in 1930, he attended Boston University Law School..." Which is correct?

On television

edit

He appeared on an episode of "What's my line" in February, 1958. The panelists attempted to figure out he was a US Congressman. Game show Network aired this episode, December 12, 2008 at 1:00 AM Mountain Time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 168.103.133.107 (talk) 08:15, 12 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Caption is incorrect

edit

Though the photograph of James Roosevelt adjacent shows him wearing the rank of Lt. Col (consistent with the text which indicates he left active duty at the end of the war as a Lt. Col.), the caption says that he was a brigadier general. neither the photo, nor the text supports this, and it should be corrected to reflect his rank. I can't figure out how to do that.70.44.43.234 (talk) 00:17, 11 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Done. Good catch! Favonian (talk) 00:35, 11 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Roosevelt was advanced to the rank of Brigadier General at the time of his retirement from the USMCR in 1959. This was in accordance with Navy Department policy allowing the promotion and simultaneous retirement of officers who received one of the "top three" decorations (Silver Star, Navy Cross or Medal of Honor). The officer went to the retired list in the higher grade, with appropriate pension and allowances. The advancement was known colloquially as a "tombstone promotion" - you would never wear it in service, but it would be carved on your tombstone. This was done only for officers decorated in World War II, never before or since. Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller was similarly "tomb-stoned" to Lieutenant General. See the Roosevelt bio on the Naval Academy website. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.244.157.3 (talk) 16:27, 5 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Philippine Liberation ribbon

edit

Roosevelt did not serve in the Philippines during the liberation campaign (Oct 44-Aug 45). Is it possible that this ribbon was mistaken for the Reserve Special Commendation Ribbon, awarded to officers of the USNR and the USMCR who had at least ten years of reserve service and commanded an operational unit during the war (Roosevelt commanded the 4th Raider Battalion). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.244.157.3 (talk) 16:35, 5 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Name

edit

I am removing the "II" after his name at the very beginning. It makes no sense if his father was FDR; it is not supported the the citation of a Time magazine article or by the better of the other references, like the NYT obituary and the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress; and there are numerous references elsewhere to his son, currently alive and active, as James Roosevelt Jr. Accordingly I am also changing the name here of his son from "III" to "Jr." Dgndenver (talk) 16:53, 18 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
