History

edit

This article is lacking a history section. For the ignorant reader (such as myself), Islamabad presents a number of questions, such as: is it an artificial city, why was such a small city made capital of Pakistan, what is the relationship with Rawalpindi, etc. The current article answers none of these questions. --LarsMarius 22:38, 27 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Islamabad History

You say that one of the reasons for Islamabad's founding is that it is close to the GHQ, but you do not say what the GHQ is, or what those letters stand for. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Davidlew9 (talkcontribs) 17:40, 13 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Islamabad, city (1998 pop. 524,500), capital of Pakistan, NE Pakistan, just NE of Rawalpindi, the former interim capital. Construction of Islamabad [city of Islam] as the capital, replacing Karachi, began in 1960. There are light manufacturing industries. Points of interest include Pakistan House, the home of the president; the national assembly building; the National Univ.; the Grand National Mosque; and the botanical gardens. The nearby Murree Hills serve as a summer resort as well as summer headquarters for many diplomatic missions. Also near the city are the historical ruins of Taxila.

Malik Muhammad Irshad

Forested area.

edit

Hi this article contains an inaccuracy. It is claimed that Islamabad was built on heavily forested land but that is incorrect. Islamabad was built on a what can be described as scrub land. Three million seeds were sown (not that the majority of them became actual trees) to create the green effect of today. Trees good!

Correction Needed

edit
  • First please change the awful main picture to a high resolution one...possibly with a entire view of the city from Damin-e-Koh.
  • Second, please correct the spelling of Islamabad at the top of the picture.

Rewording

edit

The "Tourism and Sightseeing" part reads vaguely like a travel brochure to Islamabad. I don't know enough to rewrite this section, but someone needs to.--TelevisedRevolution 07:51, 26 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Economy

edit

It would be really helpful to have a section on the economy and industries of Islamabad in this piece. Karachi has a section which might serve to inspire any budding economists here, and even has a separate article on the Economy of Karachi! NB I have also added the Wikiproject Pakistan template to this article. -- TinaSparkle 22:07, 30 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Pk-sindh.PNG

edit

Image:Pk-sindh.PNG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 08:51, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Modern Islamabad

edit

I think more should be added regarding the recent changes taking place in Islamabad. This article gives a somewhat dated picture of the city, because in the past two years it has expanded dramatically with brand new roads, a rapidly increasing population and rise in political violence. -->bandishhh 19 June 2007.

Heavy Cleanup and New List

edit

I did some heavy cleanup on this article. It looks much better now. I moved that long list of places into a new article titled List of Notable Places in Islamabad. That article is fairly underdeveloped and could use some editing from the usual editors of this article. This article also could use copy editing, and it is definitely not a Stub, as rated by the Cities project. I suggest getting it reassessed. It however needs lost of referencing as there are currently only 2 references.  UzEE  05:21, 10 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Article needs improvement

edit

This article needs a lot of development to make it a FA class article and I will be working on that from now. Your contributions are welcomed, and if I make any unwikified edit, please correct me.

  • For starters, images in the 'history' section should be related to the heading, if anyone have images of under construction capital, they can place them there.
  • The 'sectors' and 'union council' sections should be placed under 'civic administration' section.
  • There should be a section of 'government and politics', since it is the capital city. All images of Secretariat and President house should be placed there.
  • A new section of 'Culture' of Islamabad should be introduced.

And any other improvement that you feel like is important, mention it here. Thankyou. Marsa Lahminal (talk) 15:47, 3 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

edit

The image File:100px-Pk-punj.PNG is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Undesirable tone

edit

Many sections of this article strike an argumentative tone, highlighting mostly positive and sometimes downright irrelevant facts. In other words, this article usually sounds like a tourist brochure. Which is hardly surprising -- I followed some of the refs, some of which actually are tourist brochures, and there was apparently a bit of cut-and-paste. I think some revisions to the actual content of this article are needed, with special attention to NPOV guidelines. Kiyura (talk) 01:33, 22 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Reply to comments on the article

edit

There were many comments regarding the general tone, material, references, images, and other issues about the article.

The tone has been considerably changed and all the advertisement/travel guide style is removed. Reliable references (those from Official sites, authentic research work) have been added. There were some comments regarding the history section and relation with the twin city Rawalpindi, that too have been added and fixed.

As for the images, there is a lack of good high quality media for the topic on Wikipedia. Only a few images are worth adding and I have added them with the respective sections. Please note that encyclopedic article necessarily does not need a plethora of images. So refrain from adding useless images such as monkey in Islamabad and house in Islamabad.

And last, regarding the recent war on terror. Please note that the war in the FATA region has got nothing to do with Islamabad as a city. As for the terrorism in the area (Marriot bombing, Lal Masjid issue), I will add them as a reference in recent history section. However, their details should be added to the respected articles, not here.

Population

edit

The population(s) given in this article are inaccurate. The population in the infobox (1,875,000) do not match the intro (673,766). And the combined population of Islamabad/Rawalpindi is 4.5 million in the article but if you goto List of most populous metropolitan areas in Pakistan, the two add up to around 3.5.

I am not Pakistan expert but wanted to bring the issue to light in case anyone has any insight.--NortyNort (talk) 14:03, 12 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

bin Laden

edit

I just added a source for the bin Laden killing; however, I'm not so sure it belongs here, in this article. It certainly doesn't belong in it's own section. For instance, Kennedy's assassination doesn't get its own section in Dallas. So, suggestions on where to move it (or possibly even remove it entirely) are welcome. Early History

edit

Hello, I have a problem with this sentence in the Early History section of the article...

"Some of the earliest Stone Age artifacts in the world have been found on the plateau, dating from 500,000 to 100,000 years ago."

Shouldn't the small number of years be quoted first? As in: "...dating from 100,000 to 500,000 years...". I have changed it to how I think it should read. If anyone thinks or knows that I am wrong then please change it back, I won't be offended. I am fairly pedantic :). SpencerCollins (talk) 11:45, 4 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

The governance of Islamabad has, apparently, undergone something of an overhaul in late 2015. According to sources, a Mayor and City Council, forming the Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation (IMC) have been elected for Islamabad. Admittedly, the local government's power is limited, and the IMC is still subject to override by the CDA chair.

The issues are complex, and more than I am able to quickly sort out, but some sources to consider include:

  • Abbasi, Kashif (16 February 2016). "Islamabad's new mayor set to walk on a tightrope". Dawn.
  • Staff (15 February 2016). "PML-N candidate elected as first-ever mayor of Islamabad". The Express Tribune.
  • Ghumman, Khawar (4 December 2015). "Parliament watch: Who wants to be Islamabad's 'powerless' mayor?". Dawn.

Seems to be written wrong. Please refer to Capital Development Authority website and link here of the map which gives an overview [3]. There are 5 zones in the Islamabad Capital Territory region. Zone I and Zone II are open for urban development and government institutes and hence "Islamabad City". Zone III includes Margalla Hills National Park and Rawal Lake.
