"He has become known as one of the more "fiery" or "vigorous" people of aikido history."

Agreed. He also had a good sense of humour which he used in his demonstrations. --Fred26 09:00, 28 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Early years as an uchi deshi

edit

"He and other uchi deshi would often go around Tokyo at night picking fights with gangs in order to test out their skills, despite being forbidden to do so by Ueshiba. In one incident, Shioda and a fellow deshi got into a fight with a gang of about 30 yakuza. He was able to defeat the gang by bringing down the leader first. He said that this was an essential tactic in a fight against many."

Doesn't sound very encyclopedic in style, more like an anectode of sorts. Lacks citation of sources in any case. JanosJ (talk) 11:53, 21 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I agree, his early career sounds like it began in a bar. Suggest reorganizing the structure of the section Aikido career to be less episodic, and more focusd on his actual career achievements. Jls aikido (talk) 07:11, 19 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

More emphasis on his early Aikido training

edit

I think the section on his early career needs to get into how he first began to train in aikido. It talks about how the fight in the bar was his "aikido enlightenment." But I think we need to know when he first met Ueshiba, when he started his formal training, etc. I will look for sources to add this information, but if anyone out there has ready access, I think it would be a great addition! I agree, this would be an excellent addition. Janggeom (talk) 12:49, 20 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
I looked in my personal library and found a reference to how old Shioda was when he began training with Ueshiba. I think the section could certainly be improved more. I'll keep looking through my materials for more detail. Question for more experienced editors: The book I cite is by Mr. Shioda himself; however, the page I cite from is an introduction written by another writer. Is there some way to denote that in my citation? AikiHawkeye (talk) 02:19, 21 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Here is a suggested format: Surname, A. (19xx): Section name. In Shioda, G.: Book name (pp. aa–bb). Location: Publisher. This would denote an article named Section name written by A. Surname that appears on pages aa to bb (or use "p. aa" if it only takes up one page) in the book entitled Book name written by Shioda and published by Publisher at Location in 19xx. Thanks for the tip. I'll update my citation. AikiHawkeye (talk) 03:51, 23 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
