Melanesian ?

edit

So says info box , yet the main text states it’s Polynesian ..???WisDom-UK (talk) 23:41, 17 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

It gets complicated - the language spoken, Futuna-Aniwa is definitely Polynesian, but by descent, the islanders are probably 'more Melanesian than Polynesian', though the distinctions between the two are rather arbitrary. People have been travelling between the south Pacific islands for millennia, and doing all the things that people do when they meet others there, so trying to decide who is 'what' is a fools' errand. They are who they are, and if they don't easily fit outsider's classifications, that isn't their problem. If the article is going to comment on this, it should explain it better. And cite a source. 109.157.75.5 (talk) 08:06, 6 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
