FA push

edit

Okay, This article is coming together. Some things we need to do are here:

  • Lead section - should be 3 paragraphs
  • Copyedit - Article needs a thorough copyedit
  • Infobox - needs to be filled in with dates of releases of different versions.
  • Plot section - fill in section with game manual references
  • Reception section - needs to be created for original version of FFII

Also, I have now requested a peer review. Anyone who wants to do the push, you can do so now. Greg Jones II 19:12, 24 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Peer Review Suggestions

edit

The following is suggestions from the peer review.

The following suggestions were generated by a semi-automatic javascript program, and might not be applicable for the article in question.

  • The long plot summary section is just a mass of text. Can it be broken down at all, or links added?
  • Watch for redundancies that make the article too wordy instead of being crisp and concise. (You may wish to try Tony1's redundancy exercises.)
    • Vague terms of size often are unnecessary and redundant - “some”, “a variety/number/majority of”, “several”, “a few”, “many”, “any”, and “all”. For example, “All pigs are pink, so we thought of a number of ways to turn them green.”
  • As done in WP:FOOTNOTE, footnotes usually are located right after a punctuation mark (as recommended by the CMS, but not mandatory), such that there is no space in between. For example, the sun is larger than the moon [2]. is usually written as the sun is larger than the moon.[2][?]
  • Wasn't there a dwarf named Cid in the first Final Fantasy? (My apologies if I'm not using proper Wiki discussion form.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.178.32.95 (talk) 20:06, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Please ensure that the article has gone through a thorough copyediting so that it exemplifies some of Wikipedia's best work. See also User:Tony1/How to satisfy Criterion 1a.[?]

You may wish to browse through User:AndyZ/Suggestions for further ideas. Thanks, DrKiernan 14:50, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

Any of these suggestions will be greatly appreciated for FA. Thanks. Greg Jones II 20:53, 27 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Story section needs an overhaul...

edit

Seeing as how I've never had the chance to play Final Fantasy II, I came here to read the story. There isn't much of a story, however. It seems more like a jumble of words strung together to look big. Not only that, but reading it gives me a headache. Here's a sentence from it:

"The light Emperor explains that the passage was Raqia not Jade and that the palace is Arubboth (Heaven) and that they have been brought back to be asked for forgiveness, which they decline, thinking he is mocking them after visions of their friends on Earth appear, showing them Firion, Maria, Guy and Leon fighting the Emperor on Earth."

Again, that's one sentence. Roughly three ideas are glued together into one piece of text. It isn't just that it's poorly written- the entire thing needs an overhaul. It is way too long to be of any use, and makes references that only someone who has played the game would understand. I'd edit it myself, but like I said, I've never played FFII.--204.248.58.85 (talk) 03:09, 7 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Merger proposal of Characters article

edit

The article on the characters has no notability to speak of, and could be covered fully in the characters section of this article. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 00:00, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. The concept and creation stuff should be in this article as it's only one source and not significant enough to warrant a separate article. Kariteh (talk) 07:46, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

"Traditional" experience based advancement system?

edit

Given that this was the second game in the series, and that there can't have been a significant number of RPGs like it beforehand, is it appropriate to describe that system as tradition before it really came into common use? Darkwhistle (talk) 17:13, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps change it to something like "experience-based advancement system that later became a staple of the genre"? Or something to that effect.—Loveはドコ? (talkcontribs) 19:23, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Plot section

edit

Hello all. I am Master&Expert (talk), and have recently joined the Final Fantasy Wikiproject. I read through the majority of the article - for the most part, very good. However, one thing I would like to note is the plot section, which is somewhat unorganised. Some of the main issues that need tweaking include:

  • Increased comprehensiveness for those unfarmiliar with the subject
  • More links to assist the reader in comprehensiveness
  • References from a game manuel
  • Possibly shorten it

I'm currently working on copyediting it - if anyone disagrees with any changes I make, please say so and discuss before undoing entirely - unless of course I've made a mistake, in which case feel free to notify me of it (I'm still new to this whole encyclopedia-writing business, so that might be expected ;) ). Master&Expert (talk) 05:38, 24 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Question - why was "List of Final Fantasy II characters" redirected? It could have helped the reader to gain a better understanding of the plot. Master&Expert (talk) 19:19, 24 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Because it did not have enough WP:N notability or WP:V verifiability to sustain a whole article. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 17:33, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Might I ask for a link to the discussion that closed with the list being redirected? Master&Expert (talk) 07:17, 27 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

GA Reassessment

edit
This discussion is transcluded from Talk:Final Fantasy II/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the reassessment.

The article needs copyediting, the story section is way too long and detailed, the whole thing needs a copyedit, and the expansions section needs references and the reception section needs expanding. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 21:32, 12 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Erm, give us some time. We're bringing Final Fantasy (video game) back from the dead first. Gary King (talk) 02:29, 15 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Per discussion with those working on the article, I am going to fail this GA review, and allow them to carry it back through a GA nomination. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 22:15, 25 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

What happened to this article?

edit

The plot summary is alarmingly long: it's a laughingstock. The plot for this simplistic game should be 3 paragraphs at the most. I guess this proves my theory that articles decline sharply with time. — Deckiller 18:47, 12 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I agree with you that it's way too long, but I'd also point out that when it was GA'd in Spring '07 it had 10 paragraphs of plot- it was never the FF project's greatest work. --PresN 21:11, 12 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Character Section

edit

why are the character section is a paragraph that basically describes the plot???? All the other final fantasy articles have a list of there characters or a small list on the main article.Bread Ninja (talk) 15:29, 1 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

False claims

edit

I found myself looking through this article by coincidence and while I'm not normally bothered about a few dubious quotations where properly referenced, two sentences which seem infactual at best and ridiculous at worst did catch my eye.

"Despite being a sequel to Final Fantasy I, the game includes no characters or locations from the first game, the first video game sequel to do so."

This is a very, very wild claim. Perhaps it's just a terrible misarticulation and means "first FF sequel" (in which case it is redundant but less unfounded), I don't know. I have zero doubt that it is incorrect because it is so vague. There are so many prior video game sequels which meet the above criteria, like Wizardry 2, or technically Bard's Tale 2 off the top of my head - and that doesn't even scratch the surface. I'm aware Gametrailers is used as a source but this is still unencyclopedic.

Also:

"Final Fantasy II was also the first console game in which playable characters could die as part of the normal storyline."

Crazy. Okay, FF2 sort of evoked a higher level of tragedy in its death scenes than earlier games, but that doesn't make it the first game in human history to kill playable characters in its storyline. I mean, even Pac-Man could be killed.

If this is going to make a serious claim for good article status, I feel these "facts" should be amended, or reworded at least. --Monere (talk) 23:13, 13 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

This is long overdue but I have an issue with the second point being made. The line about dying is talking about an unavoidable character death as a part of the scripted storyline (the death is part of the established story) and not a character being killed due to due to an error on the part of the player which is very much avoidable (Pac-Man). That should stay unless there is an earlier game in which a death of a major character is necessary to advance the story.--70.49.83.93 (talk) 20:47, 14 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Final Fantasy II

edit

Hey everyone I was just wondering if they ever released the original Final Fantasy II in North America because I bought an NES and I am looking to collect as many Final Fantasy games as possible. So if anyone has any knowledge about this please let me know because I believe Final Fantasy II and III normally in North America are actually V and VI. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.156.108.156 (talk) 03:28, 13 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Oddly enough, I do have this information, as I have read this article, which you apparently have not. As the infobox can tell you, FF2 was released in some form in America for the Playstaion, Game Boy Advance, PSP, Playstation Network, and iOS. FF4 was originally released for the SNES in america as FF2, not the other way around. Your NES will only play FF1; no other NES Final Fantasy games were released in America. --PresN 05:08, 13 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

On ebay a custom NES game is for sale with Final Fantasy VII for NES and other Final Fantasy games including 2 and multiple language packs. The cartridge appears white and I have not verified the auciton's claim that this works on original NES machines. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:6C51:7001:200:1494:59BC:345B:C5B9 (talk) 11:10, 15 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
