This article is written VERY poorly... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.233.122.189 (talk) 16:24, 4 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Agreed - But that is what Wikipedia is there for - To improve upon what is written. The In Our Time podcast cited at the botton does a good job understand Duty through the ages from Greek's belief in Duty as Obligation or Justice to pre-enlightenment thoughts of Duty as obedience to political and other powers as well as religous. Finally, the switch from Duty to Rights in the modern age. Does anyone care to expand.

Also what is with the twenty odd examples of Civic Duty. Surely three or four would suffice?--Paulreed (talk) 15:09, 30 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

I've severely culled the list, leaving voting and paying taxes which are fairly uncontroversial examples I think, unlike for example going to the humanities section of our local library. 89.240.158.132 (talk) 07:57, 20 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Why did the original, epic and ridiculous list get reinstated? Why is it your civic duty to study humanities?89.240.158.132 (talk) 05:24, 25 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Duty in Law

edit

The quality of the article does not seem to have improved since the comment above. A central point which is missing is the concept of duty as the action required by law. Also, there should be a general discussion of the necessary correspondence between rights and duties. Relevant here is the distinction between duty as recognized by law and duty as a moral obligation following the dictates of conscience or a higher law. This could be a potentially very rich and substantive article. However, much work needs to be done. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.66.226.95 (talk) 14:58, 22 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

In Our Time

edit

The BBC programme In Our Time presented by Melvyn Bragg has an episode which may be about this subject (if not moving this note to the appropriate talk page earns cookies). You can add it to "External links" by pasting * {{In Our Time|Duty|p0054935}}. Rich Farmbrough, 03:13, 16 September 2010 (UTC).Reply

This article has a lot of potential, but is currently at a poor standard. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.108.14.82 (talk) 05:37, 18 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
