Landing on an aircraft carrier

edit

She did not land an FA-18 on the carrier--she landed in an FA-18, when the pilot landed the airplane. A small preposition makes a big difference in meaning. There is no possibility that she would have landed the airplane unless she was a qualified Navy fighter pilot, which she is not. The Helsingin Sanomat omitted the crucial preposition. For sources using the correct wording, see [1], [2], [3]. •••Life of Riley (talk) 17:24, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Then again, these sources say she landed the plane: [4] [5] (Google search) Several sources say that she is an instrument rated pilot: [6] [7] This source indicates that others believe that she piloted the plane [8]. The Turun Sanomat article (in Finnish) has a long description of the landings. The USS Nimitz (CVN-68) was sailing between California and Hawaii. She made four landings plus one touch-and-go landing. The paper at least assumes she was undergoing Navy fighter pilot training. The hardest part according to Barrett was swimming for an hour in full flight gear. Another source says the plane was a two seat variant, so naturally there was a more experienced pilot along.
The point of the exercise was to prove that women could become Navy fighter pilots. Just taking a ride on an F/A 18 is no big deal. Even the Finnish defense minister Elisabeth Rehn rode US Hornets when she was negotiating the Finnish purchase. If all Barrett was doing was taking the ride, then why all the fuzz? -- Petri Krohn (talk) 05:08, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
P.S. - And here she is "flying" a F-18 Hornet again, this time as a guest of the Finnish Air Force. This Finnish source claims she took the stick. Also this picture is interesting, showing her in the back seat of the F-18D. I would guess the pilot would fly back seat and the trainee / guest the front seat. -- Petri Krohn (talk) 06:07, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
