Talk:Atlanta in the American Civil War

Latest comment: 6 years ago by Klinch in topic Possible misidentification of a location.

The so-called "Potter House" mentioned on this page is actually the "Ponder House" named after its builder, Ephraim Ponder. The building has been frequently misidentified, probably dating to 1864. Please note the following websites:

Following the war, Ponder built an exact replica of the Atlanta house in Thomasville, Ga., where it still stands as a restaurant called the Ponder House. A son of one of Ponder's slaves, Henry Flipper, became the first black man to graduate from West Point.

Possible misidentification of a location.

edit

This article makes several mentions of a place called West Point, Georgia. I've been studying current maps of Fulton County, Georgia, and found no such place near Atlanta. However, there is an East Point, Georgia in the greater Atlanta area, just southwest of the center of Atlanta. West Point is farther down river on the Chattahoochee, where it's part of the border between Georgia and Alabama. I'm not knowledgable enough to be certain that this should be a blanket change... Someone who knows more about the region and history needs to make a determination on this. The name of the railroad is correct as the Atlanta and West Point Rail Road, but the battle locations would seem to have been near East Point, not West Point.

Hi Klinch, West Point, Georgia is the place. Why you think that it needs to be in Fulton County? Perhaps if you quote the text, it may help us to understand why you believe that there has been a faulty identification.

Hi Berean Hunter: I can't find the places I thought were incorrect; I must have misread it the first time. So I withdraw my comment/suggestion. Once you've read this, I give you leave to delete this entire conversation. Thank you for responding. Klinch (talk) 19:37, 24 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
