Too much information at 2019 in sports topic

edit

We need to determine what is notable in some subsections of this Wikipedia page. As a result, the reference subsection here gets "omitted" from view, when the 2019 in sports gets overloaded with too much information. The only answer I could think of is to create dedicated Wikipedia pages to an individual or groups of sports. Rockies77 (talk) 04:46, 28 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

What if we just put in this page, not all the events of a sport (which could be found in the new topics dedicated to each one of them) but just a part of them (like World Championships, Continental Championships, World Cups and similar)? In this way, the page wouldn't be overloaded and the detailed results would still be available. Furthermore, consider that the number of sports is growing and not always the subsections are updated (in certain cases some sports had just an empty section). Otherwise, we can just create a single subsection for each sport and avoid to insert the results here but insert them directly in those subsections. Any thoughts? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.72.112.228 (talk) 23:06, 2 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Domestic events that are notable enough for inclusion in the calendar section?

edit

Can we decide which "domestic" events are notable enough to be included in the calendar section? I think everyone is fine with the USA's "Big Four" events being included, as these four leagues have an audience outside of North America. I would suggest that the strongest candidates to be included from outside of North America would be the top five association football leagues in Europe (often referred to as the "Big Five"): the Premier League (England), La Liga (Spain), Bundesliga (Germany), Serie A (Italy) and Ligue 1 (France). These are by far the highest-profile domestic sports competitions in Europe, all of which also have a large global TV audience, especially the Premier League. Edin75 (talk) 09:25, 5 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

The page is already overloaded with informations, a discussion about this is already going on in the previous section so I think it wouldn't be a great idea to insert new domestic events here. That of USA's Big Four is a particular situation (for example, NFL is the most notable organization in American football surely and the Super Bowl is recognized as the most important event in the world, even more than the World Championships), so it needs to be discussed in another section for sure. Anyway, this doesn't prevent us to consider that if we insert new domestic events the most reasonable thing to do would be that of opening definitely this page to all domestic events in all sports we insert here (and it would be too much honestly for a page that has already been shortened a pair of times). I suggest two options (as I already wrote above): with the first option (fewer events), we insert only the most notable events in this page for each sport (such as world championships, continental championships, Olympic qualifying tournaments, etc.) and the other events (such as domestic events) would be enlisted in the subsections created during the rest of the year; with the second option (no events, just subsections), we just insert the link to each subsection page in each sport section (like we already do when a particular section is already containing too many informations) and then we update the results directly there including also domestic events (or not, it depends on what we choose). We can also include more domestic events here, but it's already difficult to keep the page and the subsections of each sports updated now, and it wouldn't be easier after we do that imo. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.72.113.183 (talk) 00:27, 6 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
I'm completely with you that the calendar should be primarily for world championships, continental championships and other high-profile events with global appeal (tennis grand slams, golf majors, cycling grand tours, for example). The reason for having a discussion simply about the notability of domestic events is that I've already removed a few domestic events from the calendar section in recent weeks (Canadian national curling championship, English domestic second tier rugby competition), questioning their notability. So, I thought it would be good to get a consensus with people who regularly update this page to decide which of these domestic events should be in there and which shouldn't. Regarding the examples I gave in my previous comment, in particular England's Premier League and Spain's La Liga already have a much broader global appeal than most of the US domestic events already included in the calendar, but who decides if they should be in the calendar or not? As the year progresses, most of the subsections below the calendar should hopefully move over to dedicated "2019 in..." pages, which means this page should really just be a calendar of the most notable sporting events and a list of links to find more detailed information for each group of sports. Edin75 (talk) 06:50, 6 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
If so, I'm for keeping USA's Big Four in the calendar and not for inserting new domestic events, on the basis of the particular situation involving the first ones, which represent the most important organizations in their sport (to be clear: more important also of the respective American confederation in some cases) or at least work as if they were (for example, the same cannot be said for association football because each national league is in a different kind of connection with the respective association, which organizes it: obviously, the same cannot be said for the NFL or the MLB). In other words, it's a matter of connection between the national leagues and their respective associations and of their "degree of representativeness" within that particular sport, not of audience imo. Furthermore, I'm also for a page with less informations: there should be just a calendar and a link to each subsection for each sport. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.72.113.183 (talk) 17:48, 6 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
I'm perfectly happy with that, if nobody else objects. I will continue to remove events that don't meet this criteria, as I've been doing up until now. My main objection was the domestic events that other people were adding, rather than any events that were missing. Agree with most of what you're saying about the USA's Big Four sports (I'm a fan of the NBA and NFL). Although basketball, baseball and ice hockey are all Olympic sports, the only one of them that has truly global support is basketball, and FIBA obviously runs a large number of world and continental championships for all age groups. Outside of North America, baseball has support in parts of East Asia and Latin America, but is very much a minority sport elsewhere, and the same can be said for ice hockey outside of certain parts of Europe. American football is basically a minority sport everywhere outside of North America, so the NFL is clearly the largest organisation in that sport. Edin75 (talk) 18:50, 6 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Need to reduce this article

edit

I see there have been previous discussions about the size of 2019 in sports but this is becoming an urgent issue. This is the 7th largest article on Wikipedia (see Special:LongPages) and it is only June 3rd. This article can't double in size before the end of the year or it will approach 1M bytes! How can this article be split up? Or are there simply sections that can be removed or reduced?

I'm not a sports fan so I don't feel like boldly going in and hacking away so I'll just try to rejuvenate this discussion and add a little urgency to the decisions that should be made before July starts up. Even if the year was divided up (Jan-June, July-Dec), this article would STILL be too big. What are some feasible but substantial changes that wouldn't cause a revolt in sports-minded Wikipedia editors? Change needs to happen, sooner better than later (autumn). Liz Read! Talk! 21:58, 3 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

What we can do is move the aquatic sports into 2019 in aquatic sports which has been alluded to on the article. It would also be very helpful if someone could replace the flags as they were recently replaced with a longer code and this added 100,000 bytes to the article. The timeline at the start of the article is also likely to be too extensive, and in general the article contains events that nobody would suggest are notable. Onetwothreeip (talk) 22:30, 3 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
We decided, as you can read above, to transfer all the information into a specific subsection for each sport. The problem is that the guys updating this page are often overloaded with things to do and I can't create new pages since I'm not a user of Wikipedia, but I'm here to lend a hand however I can: as a result, too little has been done so far. The help of whoever reads the discussions on this page is welcome to start doing what has been already decided.
Furthermore, as it has been said, there's has been an update on the flags recently but it has extended page length instead of shortening it. I don't know if we should go back to the previous solution or keep going on this road: any thoughts about it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.45.35.205 (talk) 23:48, 03 Jun 2019 (UTC)
I don't know what you're getting at but this doesn't affect other discussions, I'm just focusing on the most constructive and simplest solutions. Now that I've removed a lot of information about tennis given that there are already articles for the two main tennis tours, the priority of this article has substantially decreased and there are now more articles larger than this one. I highly recommend you create an account.
Also I would like to correct what I said about the flag templates, the increase was more like 65,000 bytes. We could restore the article to before the flags were changed, though this would remove about 15,000 bytes of content added since then as well. Onetwothreeip (talk) 00:06, 4 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

() I'm referring to the decision taken in the previous discussion, above this one: it has been established to create an appropriate subsection for each sport (such as 2019 in aquatic sports for swimming, diving, etc.) to definitely cut all information from this page and don't have further problems into the future (but, as I said in my previous comment, this hasn't been done yet). For example, your edit in the tennis section is correct but not complete: we have to cut all information from a subsection to transfer/delete them somewhere else. Regarding flags template problem, I'm available to lend a hand in order to go back to the previous Template:Flagicon instead of Template:Country data, which I still don't understand why it has been implemented. That's all. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.45.35.205 (talk) 02:44, 04 Jun 2019 (UTC)

Are you planning to see that this article becomes only an index of other articles? I know how to move things around but I don't know how to change the templates in any speedy way so it would be a great help to resolve that. The change should have been reverted as soon as it happened. Onetwothreeip (talk) 06:32, 4 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
The plan should be that. At least in my opinion. We are keeping adding sports after sports after sports (but there wouldn't be any problem about this if we would have added just certain competitions here of those sports or only the dates and locations and not also the results...) and this happening without criteria year by year to what I can see.
If we don't want to turn this page just in an index of other articles we could also consider of including Olympic sports here along with the motorsports competitions (which are probably the real most notable sports events in a year along with cricket) or we can just include certain competitions for each sport (World Championships, World Cup and similar, Continental championship both for club and countries and nothing else)...the important thing is to take a decision and do that. I'm waiting just that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.45.35.205 (talk) 10:24, 04 Jun 2019 (UTC)
  • I've split out rugby and aquatic sports. Looks like IP151... has done a few more, but there's no attribution. Given they're a slightly-dynamic IP, I'm having difficulty tracking down the various page splits. Primefac (talk) 15:27, 4 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Sorry man, I'm the guy who is transferring information. If there's any problem tell me if I have to stop, please. Anyway I would create also 2019 in basketball, snooker and association football if it's possible: with that, we should be good. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.45.35.205 (talk) 15:39, 04 Jun 2019 (UTC)
It's not that you have to stop, I'm just having trouble tracing the "copied from X into Y" so that I someone can update the attribution. Primefac (talk) 15:56, 4 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Full article split

edit

Hi! There's a lot of discussion above regarding what should be done with the huge page size. Obviously taking information into their own articles is a good way to go, however, I would suggest an alternative. The article is split into two 2019 in sports by month and 2019 in sports by sport, and have this article be a WP:CONCEPTDAB overviewing the season in terms of world championships or major news stories. This then links to both pages. Would this be a suitable change (or, have one as the main page, and the other as the spinoff, say 2019 in sports amd 2019 in sports by sport). Subsection creation request

edit

Please guys, it doesn't require much time: create the main articles indicated in each section. In particular for:

  • field hockey
  • disc golf
  • dance sports
  • motorsport
  • orienteering
  • snooker

We need to transfer information somewhere else. 151.53.249.3 (talk) 05:10, 21 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

I did a split on 2019 in cue sports, which includes snooker. I'm a little worried it'll get lost and not updated as it has until now, but this page is huge. We shall see. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 08:32, 30 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Really great job. I recently updated each section of this page also recovering the results of those events that took place months ago: the page, as it happens every year, was already not updated (except the calendar section). I also inserted in each section the template of the main articles where information needs to be transferred. Finally, I'm making a table for next year to discuss what we should include on this page: anyone willing to lend a hand is invited to participate in the discussion which will be opened soon. --151.56.210.225 (talk) 12:56, 30 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Experience with years lists

edit

Hi all, I recently split 2019 in cue sports out into it's own article. Anyone experienced with these types of articles? I'd like to improve it, and look into Featured list possibilities, but I'm a bit lost as to how to manage prose, and what issues might come up. How do I handle the fact that the article covers the snooker 18-19 season, but billiards and pool are per year? Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 14:29, 6 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Splitting off by month to 2019 in sports by month

edit

@Lee Vilenski: I have split 2018 in sports, putting the "by month" section in a new page, 2018 in sports by month. I will do he same for 2019 in sports and a new page 2019 in sports by month shortly. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 01:34, 6 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Recommend putting selected events in "Calendar by month" section

edit

I recommend putting only World Cup, Olypics, or similar "world championship" international competitions in this section, as examples. The link to the new main article is where the complete list should be. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 01:24, 6 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
