Draft:Je chie dans la Seine le 23 Juin

The Seine next to the Eiffel Tower decorated with the Olympic rings

Je chie dans la Seine le 23 Juin (lit.'I'm shitting in the Seine on 23 June') was a humorous French protest movement rallying against high government spending on the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris and neglect of local issues.[1] It called people to defecate in the river Seine on 23 June 2024, following promises from French president Emmanuel Macron and mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo to swim in the river in order to prove the effectiveness of a €1.4 billion cleanup project.[1][2][3]

Background

edit

Since it was announced in 2018,[4] the administration of Paris has invested €1.4 billion into a cleanup of the river Seine that runs through the city.[5] To demonstrate the success of the project, Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo promised on 10 January 2024 to swim in the river—a pledge that was matched by French president Emmanuel Macron on 29 February.[2][3] Hidalgo said on 10 July that she would "dive in next week"[6] whereas Macron has stated "I'll do it, but I won't give you the date."[3]

Start of the movement

edit

The first tweet with the hashtag #jechiedanslaseinele23juin was posted on 22 May 2024. It gained significant traction the next day with 16,000 tweets and retweets, and 11,000 the day after. On 24 May, a user created a website for the movement, where people could calculate when to defecate in the river such that it flowed to the central Paris in time for the swim.[7]

Results

edit

Few people ended up committing to the defecation in the Seine.[8][9]
