Commercial links

Somebody named Gary Witheford from the UK has been putting links to his website on this and other pages. He seems not to understand that self promotion is not the purpose of these pages. Is he of notable importance? If he is then msybe we should have an article about him. 22:53, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

This is Gary Witheford here, and I can say hand on heart that neither myself nor any staff have added any links to my website, or added anything about me whatsoever! I will add something to Wikipedia shortly so that I can ensure I am represented in a true light. However I wish to make it clear that I would not abuse a site such as this and have no need to use such a method to gain more business. I hope this helps to set the record straight and if anybody knows who has tried to post links to my site in this way then I would be happy to investigate it.

Never heard of him, but even if he's god somewhere, anyone putting up their own stuff is violating wikipedia guidelines that clearly say no commercial promotions. I think that applies even if they are God himself! <grin> You did the right thing. Montanabw 01:35, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Another promoter has shown up, adding a link to a commercial source, which I just deleted, and putting "Peter Campbell" into the list of notable trainers. Is that guy notable? Or does he just have a school and a website? I left the name in, but to me it is a sign of low respect for the Wikipedia process to think enough of a trainer to try to promote his commercial success but not think enough of him to write an article on him that explains why other people should be interested in him. Never heard of him, either. Usually a Google search or a check in Amazon.com will tell you if the guy has published books or something; that's a good way to separate the nationally known figures from the legends in their own minds. You know, I kind of wonder if we need to throw out the whole list other than the dead guys! This is a typical problem with "laundry lists." I say that as a minimum, let's move the ones that have articles to a "see also" section and throw out everything else. If there are red linked major trainers, we can move that list to the talk page here and those who care can create articles as needed. May solve this constant maintenance problem. AND Wikipedia project

Hi all! I worked time ago into wiki about horse-related topic, then I'd a little bit discouraged when I tried to edit Laminitis page... and I had a long time of work into many horse-related forums (Italian and English-speaking).

Here very good news for you: the last web forum I registered, shows a great, genuine interest into wikipedia! Just one from my aims: to promote BOTH wikipedia and good horsemanship & horse-related knowledge sharing!

The idea is, to copy into the AND forum some articles, and to try to edit them with a WIKI point of view (adding obviuosly some of specific, documented, NPOV knowledge of forum members) and then publishing the resulting updates into wiki.

Note that I suggested (and my suggestion has been approved) to release under a GNU FDL licence all the contents of such discussions (the other topics of the forum are covered by a default copyright), so that any of you can read it and copy it into wiki, if you like!

While I am glad you have enthusiasm for this project, all the site is is a chat forum and talk forums are not an authoritative source for wikipedia, in fact, not even allowed as sources most of the time. Also, gimmicks like bridleless riding are not real dressage, which is about correct equestrianism, with soft hands and quite leg aids an integral part. Any even halfway decent trainer in any discipline can teach a horse to perform bridleless, it's a gimmick. There is room to criticize modern competitive dressage for some rules, judging preferences and training tactics that take place "behind the barn." However, a "we aren't cruel to our horses because we don't use bits" forum isn't a true alternative. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Montanabw (talk • contribs) 03:00, August 27, 2007 (UTC)

Proposed general "Horse" WikiProject

There is now a proposal at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals#Horses for a project which would deal with all articles related to horses. It would however primarily limit itself to those articles which are not currently within the scope of any other active project.
