Through hands-on work writing and editing in Wikipedia, students will investigate key issues in research methods: identifying gaps in existing knowledge, locating and accessing public records and archival materials, and the assessing and attributing of sources. Students will also engage key issues in rhetoric and composition, considering genre, audience, style, structure and organization and more.
The class will also turn to more theory-based work to help consider questions about how knowledge is constructed, in Wikipedia and other sites of information. Who has access to information? How is access to information controlled or “disciplined”? What perspectives are overrepresented or underrepresented in the texts (written, visual, audible) we encounter and engage with? How does a particular knowledge source shape or influence public knowledge or culture?
