Oppose
edit- Oppose WP:WikiProject Astronomical objects already covers exoplanets. I suggest you create an exoplanet taskforce to WP:ASTRO instead. 65.92.182.149 (talk) 08:51, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Oppose – Proposer looks to be a new account, so possibly he or she may be unaware of the existing astronomy WikiProjects. It's a no-brainer to make this a WP:ASTRO taskforce, as many of the contributors to the exoplanet articles are already participants in that existing WikiProject. As for making separate articles for each exoplanet, well WP:NASTRO should continue to apply regardless of the outcome of this discussion. Regards, RJH (talk) 16:31, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Discussion
editAlot of discussions dealing with exoplanets already have occurred at WP:ASTRO. The discussion at WT:ASTRO has said that individual exoplanets need to meet the notability standard in order to get an article, since there are hundreds of them already, and more will be found. This situation is analogous with asteroids, where only the more notable ones have articles, and the others appear on a list instead. Considering that current estimates say that there are multiple planets per star, and we don't write star articles on every star, why would we write one on every planet, since there are going to be millions of them, as there are already millions of individually catalogued stars already. 65.92.182.149 (talk) 08:51, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have no specific objection to a WikiProject for exoplanets, but such a project would have to be under the umbrella of Wikiproject Astronomy. The stated goal of creating a new article for every exoplanet runs counter to Notability (astronomical objects), an adopted WP guideline, so the project will have to be content with improving existing exoplanet articles, and creating articles for exoplanets that have established notability. Cheers, AstroCog (talk) 15:05, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A new exoplanet project proposal has cropped up, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Extrasolar planets for March 2012. 70.24.251.71 (talk) 06:14, 7 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
