Alcohol and their first explorers

edit

Mohammad Abu Bakr Razi (Zakaria), an Iranian scientist, was the first to use alcohol and bilateral wicks to treat the wounded, as well as cold water to treat fever. Razi is also said to have been the first to discover the chemical H2So4, now called "sulfuric acid", known in Arabic as "al-zaj al-akhdar" and formerly known as "zita al-razi". He extracted it from iron sulfur, and the method of using this substance remains the same. Razi was also the first to extract "alcohol" from fermented starches and sugars. He was the first to diagnose smallpox. However, the discovery of alcohol and sulfuric acid by Razi has been a very valuable service to medical knowledge. The two-sided wicks mentioned above were still in use until the middle of the first half of the fourteenth century AH. One of the first Iranian scientists to be recognized as the founder of chemistry was Jaber ibn Hayyan (715-815 AD), who was revived by chemical operations including crystallization, calcination, solution, sublimation, and sublimation. (Reduction) etc. He is familiar with them and has described them in his works. Jaber sought to understand the changes that occur during chemical processes. He even mentioned the purpose of each of these operations, for example, explaining that the purpose of calcination is to remove impurities from metals. Jaber also describes the processes of steel production, refining of other metals, dyeing of fabrics and leather, polishing and dyeing of waterproof fabrics, preparation of hair dye, and so on.

Top bloke. We have an article about him here: Muhammad ibn Zakariya al-Razi Chuntuk (talk) 08:59, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
And we also have an article about Jabir ibn Hayyan. Deor (talk) 18:16, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
A large part of this is fringe stuff: prominent and reliable sources won't support most of it. I even have a strong feeling that some of it originated on old revisions of our very own pages on these two Muslim chemists, though parts of it clearly originate in the fringe-y scholar Ahmad Y. Hassan. The user (IP range here) has tried to add this several times without citing any source. ☿ Apaugasma (talk ) 03:21, 11 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone know what's up with reftag.appspot.com?

edit

It's mentioned in WP:CITEGENERATORS and I've used it for year and years. Gives an servlet error now. :( - Scarpy (talk) 00:35, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Scarpy Known issue unfortunately and not actively maintained. I removed the project in the meantime. ~ Shushugah (he/him • talk) 08:26, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Shushugah is the code available on github or elsewhere? I would be happy to deploy a backup somewhere else. - Scarpy (talk) 20:57, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Scarpy yup! Here ya go! I am unsure if it’s a server issue or API change. Feel free to tag me in your GitHub fork, I have same handle on GitHub as here. https://github.com/Apoc2400/Reftag ~ Shushugah (he/him • talk) 21:01, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Getting convert to prefix with < and > (less than/greater than)

edit

Any way to get this to work?

I tried {{convert|<|1|kg}} but that just returns an error. I checked the documentation and got nothing either. Kylesenior (talk) 05:53, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It's not clear to me what you're trying to do. Does use of the entities < and > help? Maproom (talk) 07:58, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Jehanzeb Aziz

edit

Hi, I am Jehanzeb Aziz.

1. when this entry first appeared many years back, I was surprised myself. I came to know about it through a relative/friend but I admit I liked it. I tired to find out who put it on wiki...and it was one of my old classmate. Anyways there were few inaccuracies I requested her to correct which she did. however it was never updated.

2. The article lacked references about published/ broadcast work. I wanted to provide links but didn't know how to do it. Many of my published articles are now available online . I also write a weekly column for a national daily,It is also available online in the newspaper website. I published a best selling novel few years back. similarly many of my telecast productions are on various video plateforms....and many other references

3. please advise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 39.40.67.176 (talk) 08:29, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! As noted in the above link, the WP article Jehanzeb Aziz was deleted in May. Start with reading WP:GNG and WP:BASIC. Based on the demands there, what are the best 3-5 sources you know that are at the same time reliably published (WP:RS), independent of you, and about you in some detail? This excludes wikis, blogs, your websites, etc, etc. Without such sources, there won't be an article. However, note WP:NOENG. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:55, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. The links used in the Medal tables at National team appearances in the FIFA Women's World Cup & UEFA Women's Championship link to the men's teams. We need a template for the women's teams. Or do they already exist? Aquatic Ambiance (talk) 12:45, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How to write infoboxes for historical states

edit

Hey all, I was wondering if someone could direct me to where I can learn how to fill out infoboxes for historical states; specifically, the succeeded by/preceded by sections. I would think we'd want things to seamlessly go both ways, such as how the Qedarites' infobox states succession by the Nabataean Kingdom, and the Nabataean Kingdom states precession by the Qedarites, but a number of them only go one way: Take, for example, the Lihyan being succeeded by the Nabataean Kingdom, but no mention of the Lihyan in the Nabataean infobox. Thanks ARADPLAUG (talk) 13:12, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@ARADPLAUG: Hi there! It appears there's a conversation about these parameters at Template talk:Infobox country#Adding Preceded by and Succeeded By. You might want to continue the conversation there. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 13:18, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, it seems like that discussion is about current countries, not about historical ones. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ARADPLAUG (talkcontribs) 13:31, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@ARADPLAUG: I noticed the comment "These fields have caused quite a bit of trouble in some historical articles" in the conversation. It might be better to ask your question in a separate section of the page. (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. What is a good infobox for Accessible Books Consortium?

edit

Hi all

I've just created Accessible Books Consortium, does anyone have a suggestion for a good infobox to use?

Thanks

. John Cummings (talk) 15:05, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@John Cummings: Hi there! I suggest trying {{Infobox organization}}. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 17:15, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@John Cummings: Also, you have a lot of redlinks in that article. Per Wikipedia:Red link, is each one of those organizations notable and verifiable? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 17:19, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi GoingBatty thanks very much, used that infobox. Yes it seems likely that almost all of them will be notable enough, the majority of them are national disability organsiations, national libraries and large publishers. I think its just an area of Wikipedia that is poorly covered. Thanks again. John Cummings (talk) 17:44, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect proxy IP blocking of part of the UN, how do I request this is changed?

edit

Hi all

Recently I've been doing some work with a part of the UN and it appears that they are blocked from Wikipedia because their IP 165.225.95.30 is part of blocked range 165.225.0.0/17. Can someone tell me how to correct this?

Thanks

. John Cummings (talk) 16:01, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You could/should try asking the blocking admin, and the blocking steward, to at least change the block reason to something more meaningful and relevant for the end users. Fortunately there is one person who can do both. The block is anon-only, so people can still edit with an account. They just need to be given a more useful message. TBH I'm not sure you will get the range completely unblocked. Although that's a possibility, Zscaler does sometimes have some issues (I haven't looked closely here). And I doubt that's a very static or permanently assigned IP, btw. If all your requests fail, WP:AN is the next venue to try. -- zzuuzz (talk) 16:38, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi zzuuzz, thanks very much, I've made a request there, I don't know who the admin is who blocked them. John Cummings (talk) 17:41, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
John Cummings as mentioned above, the blocking admin was AmandaNP, see the block log. The block is set to expire in 2022. If you have any enquires, I recommend asking on their talk. — Berrely • TalkContribs 17:45, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Is a critical review, such as an album review, a secondary source?

edit

Would an album review of an album by the musician who the article is about be a secondary source helping establish notability? Greg Dahlen (talk) 18:00, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Greg Dahlen: Hi there! No, a musician talking about their own album is not an independent source, and therefore does not help establish notability. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 18:08, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@GoingBatty: sorry that syntax can be read two different ways. What I meant is if Musician A or Band A makes an album, and someone who isn't Musician A or a member of Band A reviews it in print, can the review be used in a Wikipedia article about Musician A or Band A as a secondary source establishing notability? This is probably covered somewhere in Wikipedia's articles about the theory of writing Wikipedia articles, but so far I can't find it. Greg Dahlen (talk) 18:52, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Greg Dahlen: If the reviewer is NOT Musician A or Band A, then the review is an independent secondary source. The reviewer would also have to be a reliable source and the review would have to provide significant coverage to be helpful for notability. For example, if I review the album on my personal blog, it wouldn't help establish notability. However, if Rolling Stone published a review of the album, it would be helpful. The criteria you're looking for is WP:MUSICBIO. Hope this helps! GoingBatty (talk) 19:15, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This template by default only fetches information that is sourced in Wikidata to third party sources. Ruslik_Zero 20:21, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ruslik, спасибо. Но ведь в русской Википедии есть шаблон, разворачивающий всю инфу из ВД (ru:Бакаидов, Иван Александрович). Какой шаблон в энвике ему соответствует? Я не смог найти. = Thanks. But in Russian Wikipedia there is a template that unfolds all the information from the WD (ru:Бакаидов, Иван Александрович). What template in enwiki matches it? I could not find. Thx. Lesless (talk) 20:29, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You can set onlysourced parameter to 'no'. Ruslik_Zero 20:21, 11 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see such a parameter in the documentation. If I set it, nothing happens. Please, see how it is done in the Russian version: w:ru:Бакаидов, Иван Александрович. Is there really no such thing in the English? Lesless (talk) 04:24, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
See also w:ru:ВП:Форум/Викиданные#Шаблон_с_подкачкой_Викиданных. Lesless (talk) 14:51, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Lesless: Sure. Of the 100,000 or so active Wikipedia editors, I estimate that less than 50 actively monitor the help desk. We are all volunteers, and each of us does what we can, when we can, with no particular organization and no assignment of questions to volunteers. Fortunately for you, One of the "lurkers" (a rare but valuable contributor to the help desk) was able to help you. I notice that you are an active and experienced Wikipedian, but I do not recall seeing you answer help desk questions. That's fine, we all do what we can. -Arch dude (talk) 16:54, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Arch dude, I answer in Russian Wikipedia, I don't know English so well, it's pretty hard for me here. In ruWP, on the contrary, they say that just look how many admins there are in the English Wikipedia, how quickly everything is solved there, they quickly help! It turns out that in Russian Wikipedia it is still faster). Lesless (talk) 17:14, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Add Churches as a table of information on a town's page

edit

I'd like to add a table of Churches in the page for a town. Each Church would have:

 • Link to website
 • Name of Church
 • Pastor's Name
 • Denomination (if applicable)
 • Address of Church

Is that appropriate data to add to a town's page?

And then Mosques? Synagogues? Temples? Shrines? Gurdwaras? Jedi meeting places? Unless they are notable enough to have their own page, I don't think they belong, not at that level of detail. And just you wait till one of them schisms...!--Verbarson (talk) 22:11, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Would we include churches that are just some guy hustling a tax dodge out of his garage? †dismas†|(talk) 22:18, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No, that's pretty much covered under WP:NOTDIRECTORY. We are not here to create a town directory, with utilities, churches, restaurants, gyms, bars, etc. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:09, 11 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Bonnie Scott, Assistant Brooke Lewis Bellas — Preceding unsigned comment added by AssistantBS (talkcontribs) 22:41, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The article lede already says her name is Brooke Lewis Bellas. Article titles use the guidance in WP:COMMONNAME. RudolfRed (talk) 22:49, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@AssistantBS:. You can propose a renaming on the talk page Talk:Brooke Lewis.
If she is commonly known as Brooke Lewis, the article title cannot change because WP:COMMONNAME requires that we title articles by the commonly-used name. That is why our article on Bill Clinton is not titled "William Jefferson Clinton", for example. ~Anachronist (talk)

@‪Anachronist‬ Thank you for your help. I do not know how to use this site or respond, so I want to make sure to thank you. Best, Bonnie Scott — Preceding unsigned comment added by AssistantBS (talkcontribs)

@AssistantBS: You're welcome. If you want to make any changes to the article, please propose them on Talk:Brooke Lewis.
The image File:Brooke Lewis Bellas.jpg, in particular, needs the correct license. It was uploaded by the account "Brooke Lewis" and claimed as "own work" which is not possible. The photographer owns the copyright and we need permission from the copyright holder or proof that the copyright was transferred to the uploader. See WP:CONSENT for the correct communication format and email address for the actual copyright holder to use. ~Anachronist (talk) 00:27, 11 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed - the photo metadata says the copyright belongs to Bird's Eye Photography in Los Angeles. Check the web site's page at https://www.birdseye-foto.com/2913699-headshots . The photograph in question is about six rows down, and the page says "Copyright@AllRightsReserved". --Larry/Traveling_Man (talk) 05:27, 11 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
