Wikipedian in Residence
editManaaki Whenua – Landcare Research hosted the Wikipedian in Residence Mike Dickison 8–28 September 2018. During this time he arranged the upload of more than 1000 illustrations by Des Helmore, ran a Commons meetup to encourage use of the images, gave two group presentations to staff, and worked individually with staff members to tutor them on Wikipedia and copyright.
Des Helmore uploads
editAs of February 2019, these images are currently being used on 525 Wikipedia pages in about 20 languages, and were viewed 63,606 times in January (70,000 in Dec, 78,000 in Nov, 67,000 in Oct, so an average of 69,500 a month and estimated 834,000 views for the year). Des Helmore images are also starting to appear in widely-varied parts of the Internet:
- A blog post, Handcrafted Visualization: Precision by Robert Simmon, discussing the technical and aesthetic choices Helmore made in his illustrations
- A lucanid beetle illustrating an article that mentions a French dance company called Lucane
- A huhu beetle featured on a gig poster for Palmerston North rock bank Skitz Hydro
