Automatic, Supervised, or Manual: Automatic
Programming language(s): Python
Source code available: User:BogBot/Source_code/Task_04
Function overview: for each Gene Wiki article, create a redirect based on the official Human Genome Organisation symbol followed by "(gene)"
Links to relevant discussions (where appropriate): Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)/Archive_86#UID_interface_to_Wikipedia
Edit period(s): one time run
Estimated number of pages affected: creating approximately 10,000 redirects
Exclusion compliant (Yes/No): Yes (if the page name or redirect already exists, the bot will not touch it)
Already has a bot flag (Yes/No): Yes
Function details:
The motivation to create these redirects is there is no consistent way of naming Gene Wiki pages. Some are named after the gene symbol, while others are named after the full gene name while others are named after the protein that is encoded by the gene. Gene Wiki pages provide extenal links to several external gene databases. Some of these databases have offered to supply reciprocal links back to the corresponding Wikipedia articles (e.g., IUPHAR). At present there is no straight forward method to locate these pages. Creating a redirect for each Gene Wiki page based on the official Human Genome Organisation gene symbol following by "(gene)" will provide a systematic unambiguous redirect for each article so that it will be easy for outside organizations to located the appropriate Wikipedia articles and provide reciprical links.
{{R from gene symbol}} will be added to each redirect page so that each of these redirects will be included in Category:Redirects from gene symbols.
A sample redirect created by the bot may be found here: NR1H3 (gene)

Are you planning to go with this further? — HELLKNOWZ ▎TALK 17:04, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Sorry for the long delay. I still plan to implement this but at the moment I am busy in real life. I will resume work on this in the next couple of weeks. Cheers. Boghog (talk) 17:04, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- If/when this is picked up again, would be useful to consider/agree an appropriate redirect template from Category:Redirect templates to use. Rjwilmsi 19:18, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Good suggestion. I have created {{R from gene symbol}} and propose to add this to each of the redirect pages.

Just checking in. MBisanz talk 00:49, 31 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]- Believe it or not, I am actually working on it as I type this. I have assembled the required gene mappings and hope to finish this in the next couple of days. Boghog (talk) 00:53, 31 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Thanks. No rush at all. MBisanz talk 00:54, 31 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- I apologize for the lengthy delay. I am now ready to complete this job and have created a few test pages (see for example AKT3 (gene)).

- Approved for trial (50 edits). Please provide a link to the relevant contributions and/or diffs when the trial is complete. MBisanz talk 21:32, 1 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Trial complete. A list of the created redirects may be found here. No problems detected. Boghog (talk) 02:10, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, there are a few problems, and it definitely looks like you noticed several of them:
- I count 65 redirects, but your bot was only approved for 50 edits. What's with the extra edits?
- What happened here: [1] ?
- What happened here: [2] ?
- What happened here: [3] ?
- What happened here: Gene symbol (gene) ? Is this just an issue of the bot's input being misconfigured?
2-4 are a little concerning to me, but it looks like you noticed those early and corrected them. Is that correct? Hersfold non-admin(t/a/c) 18:08, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- 2-4 were single isolated tests fine tuning the edit summary and adding categories (please note that the dates of these preliminary test edits were on December 31 and January 1). The "gene symbol/article name" data came from an Excel spreadsheet that had a header row which I forgot to delete from the input file. The "gene symbol" data column was labeled "Gene symbol" and hence the Gene symbol (gene) redirect was accidentily created. After fixing all these minor issues, the first real test edit for the bot [4] was on January 2 and the last test edit was completed approximately
one hour15 minutes later. I miscounted the number of entries in the test file so I ran over the limit of 50 accidentily. Sorry about that. Boghog (talk) 18:55, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
