History

edit

Arbnesh (Vitomirica) was not a very inhabited place until the division of the Albanian lands in 1913 at the London Conference when Kosovo was given to Serbia and Montenegro. Then Serbia and Montenegro divided the areas of occupation where Montenegro took the area west of the White Drin and Serbia took the part east of this river. Then Montenegro and Serbia brought large masses of people from Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia promising the good living conditions and in this way they populated the area which was previously populated by Albanians. After the arrival of people in this area from various Slaviccountries, the Albanians were denied any right, even that of education in their language. The town was previously called Vitomirica in Serbian language, but after the Independence Declaration of the Republic of Kosovo in 2008 it was called Arbnesh in honor of the Albanian peopele in Italy (Arbereshet).
