Talk:Lì (chinese surname)

edit

Hi agree with you, I've left a 2nd level warning template on his/her Talk page, not responding to communication and continuing to edit. In ictu oculi (talk) 06:43, 21 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, let's see how this goes. _dk (talk) 08:22, 21 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
<rant> Oh boy, and there I was thinking this would just be a procedural revert to the original state.</rant> Anyhow, the user again moved Li (黎) to the very useful title Li (family name) after I had requested a histmerge to fix his cut&paste move. _dk (talk) 17:01, 21 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes I noticed, what a disaster. When did the system blacklist take place? Is it just on moves or creations? In ictu oculi (talk) 08:46, 23 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I have no idea when the system blacklist started, I only noticed when I tried to move the Li (badly named thingamajig) back to Li (利) and a big red notice showed up. I just created 澳門之戰 as a redirect to test this, but that went through okay. So I guess the blacklist is just on moves? (or just 利, or redirects are exempt) _dk (talk) 08:56, 23 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hm, oh well in the meantime I'm placing at Baijiaxing numbers, as a temporary fix, otherwise can't distinguish which "surname" is which. Also I left a clear message in Chinese which has been ignored. Can you do the honours with a 3rd Warning template. Next step block. In ictu oculi (talk) 08:59, 23 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I have given him the good old Chinese "soft and hard" treatment. (a welcome message coupled with a 3rd level warning) _dk (talk) 09:20, 23 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Your Chinese is better than mine. Any interest in Vietnamese? In ictu oculi (talk) 10:18, 23 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
My knowledge in the Vietnamese language is limited to the Cantonese corruption of Bat lau dung laai :p I really do hope that the Baijiaxing solution is temporary though, as the Baijiaxing is outdated by almost a thousand years. _dk (talk) 10:24, 23 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Shame, we could do with some kindness showing to Vietnam culture and language on en.wp. I suspect your kind inclinations might go beyond Bat lau dung laai (which I only know from skits, not the original), but thanks anyway.
Yes, Baijiaxing is only a placement. It is because it is so bad that I parked them there. btw I suppose you've seen http://news.shangdu.com/401/20130415/13_5786542.shtml In ictu oculi (talk) 10:32, 23 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Interesting. I didn't know Baijiaxing is updated to something like a census now. Thanks for that. _dk (talk) 10:46, 23 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Tone and refactoring

edit
Hi Deadkid dk, I was surpised when I saw this...I assume this [1] is in reply to Rob Sinden not my comment (an edit conflict). If so, can you reunite the thread above (WP:refactor) to make that more obvious. Further, "anti-intellectual" (especially without qualification) may be interpreted as WP:ad hominem and/or incivility. Thanks Widefox; talk 14:56, 21 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sorry about that, I have moved the thread to where it belongs. _dk (talk) 16:08, 21 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

It's a shame how things are turning out over there - I thought we were getting somewhere yesterday... --Rob Sinden (talk) 13:48, 25 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sigh. Such is life. I agree with having more eyes on the issue, preferably experienced and neutral meditators. _dk (talk) 13:59, 25 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Temporary solution?

edit

I've put forward a proposal at Talk:Lì (Chinese surname)#Temporary solution. Do you think this sounds reasonable to you? Something you could get behind? --Rob Sinden (talk) 09:52, 27 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sounds reasonable for me. _dk (talk) 13:47, 27 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Could you please stop implementing Rob Sinden's "temporary solution"? See my reply to his "solution" at the link above. A title such as Ji (surname meaning "concubine") is both offensive and historically incorrect. According to both Shuowen Jiezi and Guoyu, Ji was named after a river, and the character only acquired the meaning of "concubine" many centuries later. And how did you come up with Qin (surname meaning "ash tree")? Qin is named after the State and Dynasty of Qin, and the "ash tree" thing is so obscure it's almost never used and not listed in most dictionaries. It really needs to be moved back to Qin (surname) as it's no doubt the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for that title. -Zanhe (talk) 21:48, 1 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
You really can't please everyone. So yes, "ash tree" is weird, but Qin (surname named after the state of Qin) and Ji (surname named after the Ji River) are not very helpful since they're little better than tautologies. I'm in support of useful disambiguations by what the Chinese character commonly means nowadays (to be as accessible to readers as possible), not necessary where the surname originates. _dk (talk) 03:19, 2 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
So 秦 is actually from 舂禾 etymologically. Wiktionary lied to me. I agree with you that 秦 should be the primary topic though, and I've filed a RM to revert my move. _dk (talk) 03:38, 2 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
The speedy move request was blocked. _dk (talk) 06:06, 2 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi DK, as User:Zanhe I think, but see also undiscussed moves/merges at Talk:Li (surname meaning "profit"). 09:37, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Qin (surname originally meaning "pounding grain"), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Jurchen (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Would appreciate your comments here after your recent participation in this discussion. --Rob Sinden (talk) 10:31, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I'm indifferent about whether those articles get merged. We can always split them out again when we need to. The question is: to what? So I've started what I hope to be the climatic final act to this saga, in the page where it all started, please have a look and discuss. _dk (talk) 18:07, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Well. It's a lengthy process and it's somewhat like defending your thesis in front of a panel of professors. I don't think I am knowledgeable enough to do this nor do I have time to expend such efforts (and frankly I would rather pursue another topic if I have time). You are most certainly welcome to initiate the process though, and I'll see how I can help. _dk (talk) 01:23, 2 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

"Canonity" of Chinese reading of Chinese name

edit

Hi! I caught this edit.

The practice on here is to put in the pinyin reading of a Chinese character appearing in a Japanese work. Because the character is Chinese the pinyin is automatically canon. It's easy to determine, as usually Chinese characters only each have one reading. Use http://mdbg.net and plug in the characters and you will have it.

WhisperToMe (talk) 05:27, 10 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

I am still against inserting whatever information ZUN did not provide. Even "Hong Meiling" itself without the tone marks is stretching it, but I can let that slide because it's the commonly used name in the western fandom. _dk (talk) 20:01, 10 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
There needs to be consistency across all anime and manga articles. Either we provide the pinyin or we don't. If anything because of the ban on original research I wouldn't provide the version without the tone marks because no official version or "reliable source" uses it, and no RS refers to that version. WhisperToMe (talk) 04:51, 11 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I can live with having no Hong Meiling. _dk (talk) 10:13, 11 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Alright. So I would like to have the official spelling, Hepburn, and Pinyin forms only noted. Sound good? WhisperToMe (talk) 20:40, 11 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion declined: Yang Tiao

edit

Hello Underbar dk. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Yang Tiao, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: I agree this does look a bit like a hoax, but this person is listed at List of people of the Three Kingdoms which means I think it needs discussing at AFD. Thank you. SmartSE (talk) 18:50, 22 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Do you want to list it or shall I? SmartSE (talk) 18:54, 22 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
