Hello, I am interested in the technical aspects of Wikipedia. Initially I thought that Wikipedia used HTML as its source code, yet more recently upon pressing the "view source" of a protected page I have discovered a unique syntax you seem to refer to as 'wikicode', since then I have been looking at Wikipedia's templates which seem to begin and end with two '{' facing both directions. I have recently come across this 'helpme' template, so I thought I would aid in the technical aspects of Wikipedia. I am really interested of the efficiency of the efficiency and robustness of the HTML to WIKI-CODE (or vice versa) converters. But, if there are any fees involved with Wikipedia, I am not interested!

Hi! For basic information on Wikipedia you could try the Wikipedia article. No, there are no fees involved.
For an introduction to the 'wikicode', try Help:Wiki markup; for deeper information try Help:HTML in wikitext, Help:Magic words and Help:Template. The conversion of wikicode to HTML is handled by the MediaWiki software. It's all open source, so if you really want to explore how the conversion is done, you can download the source code.
Feel free to post questions on my talk page and I will do my best to answer them. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:30, 31 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
